Chapter 110
Chapter 110: An Unsettling Atmosphere
Inside the student council office, Ishizaki and the others had already explained the general situation to Horikita.
In brief, the three of them had gotten into a dispute with Sudo, but they hadn’t expected Sudo to be so violent. Without any provocation, he had used force and beaten all three of them, including Ishizaki, leaving them in the sorry state they were in now.
Horikita remained unfazed upon hearing this, while Tachibana, who had already learned the details of the incident, had a calm expression. Hikigaya, however, appeared puzzled.
Although Hikigaya was filled with doubt, this was not the right moment for him to speak up. After a moment of contemplation, Hikigaya turned to Tachibana and said, “Tachibana-senpai, since this matter involves our class, I think I should excuse myself.”
He was requesting a formal recusal because the matter concerned his class, and in the interest of fairness in the student council, he believed he should not be involved in this issue.
Tachibana immediately understood Hikigaya’s intention and was about to nod in agreement when Horikita, who had not said a word until now, suddenly spoke up: “Hikigaya, stay. I believe you will handle this matter fairly.”
The smile that Ishizaki had been about to show immediately froze, and to outsiders, it looked like his face had crinkled in discomfort, making him appear rather comical.
Hikigaya glanced at Horikita with a confused expression, but her face showed no change in emotion. He nodded to signal that he understood.
“Your complaint from Class C has been accepted by the student council. In the interest of fairness, I will personally handle this violent incident. Do any of you have objections?” Horikita said in a serious and impartial tone.
Ishizaki and the other two exchanged glances and then nodded, signaling that they had no objections. In fact, they were rather pleased that the student council president herself was in charge of this dispute.
After a brief exchange between Horikita and Tachibana, Tachibana turned to Ishizaki and the others and said, “The student council’s hearing will take place tomorrow after school. We need to hear testimonies from both parties involved to make a preliminary judgment. Please make sure to attend tomorrow’s meeting; otherwise, any negative evaluations or consequences will fall on you.”
Tachibana recited some procedural matters to Ishizaki and the others in a formal tone, then hurriedly urged them to go to the infirmary for treatment.
Ishizaki quickly thanked Tachibana, and he and the other two hurriedly left. However, just before they left, Ishizaki unconsciously glanced at Hikigaya, only to find that Hikigaya was looking back at him. Startled, Ishizaki almost tripped and fell.
The next day, on the first day of July, the students of Class D seemed very eager from the morning. Today was the day to settle the class points for the previous month, and June had been a relatively average month for Class D. Therefore, many students were looking forward to it because Class D had been at zero points for two months, so surely this month would show some improvement, right?
In reality, Hirata was the one most anxious about this. Next in line was Horikita, who was also paying close attention to the class point changes for the last month. After all, if Class D was stuck at zero points for three consecutive months, the discontent that Hirata had managed to suppress would reignite, and the class would fall into mutual blame again.
As for Horikita, she had been exploring the rules for class point increases and decreases. There was no need to explain the deduction rules; what she was more focused on was how to increase points, since this was crucial for whether they could move up to Class A.
However, within Class D, Horikita was probably the only one with such “unrealistic” expectations. Even Hirata and the others were only hoping for “a little more class points next month.”
So, when Chabashira-sensei entered the classroom with the poster containing the class points, everyone couldn’t help but feel nervous. When they saw the number 87 written next to Class D, the class erupted in cheers.
Hirata, seeing this, couldn’t help but let out a long sigh of relief. On the other hand, Horikita let out a sigh as well.
Hikigaya, of course, understood the reason for Horikita’s sigh. Aside from Class D’s 87 class points, other classes had seen varying degrees of increase, with Class A reaching a staggering 1004 class points. This tangible difference felt like a vast chasm, crushing all the lower-ranked classes.
Of course, the other students in Class D didn’t care. They were more concerned with the fact that this month, they were finally receiving their 8700 personal points, which had become a “lifesaver” for many of them. After all, many of the students in Class D had been eating the wild vegetable meals for almost two whole months!
“Eh? Why aren’t the personal points coming in?”
Ikeda, excited, immediately opened his phone and was shocked to find that his personal points balance was still zero. He let out a wail of despair.
Many other students also noticed this, and a bad feeling surged in their hearts.
“Teacher, what’s going on?”
Hirata hurriedly asked Chabashira-sensei, but Hirata’s voice was so panicked that he probably didn’t even realize it himself.
“Because of a dispute, your personal points will be delayed,” Chabashira answered, while her eyes subconsciously flicked towards Hikigaya.
At that moment, Hikigaya checked his phone and found that, indeed, the personal points for Class C hadn’t been transferred either. So it wasn’t just Class D—Class C was in the same situation?
When the students in the class heard Chabashira’s words and sighed in relief, Hikigaya couldn’t help but show a subtle expression.
After class, Chabashira-sensei called Sudo, who was about to lie down and sleep, “Sudo, come to the teacher’s office after school.”
“What?! I have basketball practice after school!”
Sudo was very unhappy.
“I’ve already said what I needed to say. Whether you go or not is your choice. Of course… if you can handle the consequences.”
Chabashira looked at Sudo coldly and then turned to leave.
Sudo slammed his fist on the desk in frustration, drawing everyone’s attention. When he met Horikita’s unfriendly gaze, he cursed under his breath and sulkily returned to his seat.
“Hikigaya, do you know something?”
Horikita seemed to sense something and suddenly turned to ask Hikigaya.
Hikigaya looked at Horikita in surprise. When did this iceberg of a girl become so good at “reading the room”?
“You should know by tonight at the latest,” Hikigaya replied vaguely.
Then, after school, Hikigaya packed up his things and went to the student council office. Inside the office, Ishizaki, Ikeda, and Kondo had already been waiting for a while, along with a teacher who wore glasses and looked a bit shadowy—the homeroom teacher of Class C, Sakagami.
When Hikigaya saw the teacher from Class C, the teacher also looked at him, his gaze sharp and full of aggression, squinting as he scrutinized Hikigaya.
Hikigaya, as if unaware of Sakagami’s “hostility,” simply greeted him briefly before walking over to Tachibana.
Soon after, the door to the office opened again, and Chabashira-sensei entered with an indifferent expression, followed by a visibly irritable and impatient Sudo.
