Chapter 6: Chapter 6: Power
Xalin and the group stepped into the teleportation device, and in an instant, they were whisked away from Galdar. They materialized on the surface of Draenor, at the planet's teleportation base. The base itself was fortified with towering walls of steel and reinforced barriers, designed to keep the teleporters safe from the planet's hostile beasts. Draenor was a Gray zone planet, marked between Blue and Orange in terms of danger. The sky above was dark and foreboding, while the air felt heavy with anticipation.
They took a moment to assess the area before activating their scouters, wrist devices designed to track nearby beasts. The scouters blinked and beeped, indicating an intermediate-tier beast lurking nearby. The team started running in the direction of the signal, their excitement barely contained.
While they sprinted through the rough terrain, Xalin glanced over at Lira, curious about her abilities. "Ive been meaning to askwhats your power?"
Lira hesitated for a second before responding, her voice loud enough for the others to hear. "I can manipulate blood."
This caught the attention of the group. A lean man with long black hair that reached his waist tied behind his head with two long bangs framing his face smirked. His average build and calm demeanor hid his skills, but his glowing blue eyes revealed the power within.
"I'm Kell, by the way," he said, catching Xalins attention. "I deal in shadow manipulation. I can create paths out of shadows, slowing down enemies or even controlling the battlefield if used right."
Xalin noticed how nonchalantly Kell explained his abilities, as if it was just another part of who he was. There was no hint of leadership, just a quiet confidence. He seemed laid back, blending into the group, but there was no doubt his skills were formidable.
The others began introducing themselves, too.
"Im Roran, and I use straw magic," said a lanky man with dark green eyes. "I know, sounds weak, but trust me it's deadlier than you think. With a straw doll, I can target specific parts of a beasts body, and with a little piece of them, I can take them down from a distance."
A quiet woman with silver hair spoke next. "I'm Selena. I summon creatures. Its my way of fighting, and trust me, they pack a punch."
Xalin nodded, taking it all in. "I've got black fire," he finally added. "Its powerful but... complicated. Sometimes it's hard to control."
Kell chuckled. "Complicated, huh? Lets hope you don't accidentally burn our payday!" His playful tone kept the atmosphere light, and the group laughed as they continued running toward their target.
They finally arrived at the location marked on their scouters, and standing before them was a massive intermediate-tier beast. It looked like a lizard mixed with a boar, its dark scales glistening in the low light. The creature growled, and the ground shook under its weight.
Kell wasted no time. He stepped forward, slamming his hands to the ground as shadows extended from his feet and wrapped around the beast. "Ill slow it down. Shadow Path!" he shouted. The shadows crawled toward the beast, making it move sluggishly, as if wading through quicksand.
Xalin watched with interest. He had never met another shadow user, and seeing Kells ability in action made him even more curious.
Selena acted next, summoning a gorgon from the shadows. The snake-haired creature lunged at the beast, its snakes biting into the beasts side and ripping off a chunk of its flesh.
Roran grinned, placing a straw doll on the ground. "Got it," he said, taking the piece of flesh and attaching it to the doll. With a swift motion, he stabbed the dolls chest. The same hole appeared on the beasts chest, causing it to roar in agony before collapsing to the ground, lifeless.
The group exchanged satisfied glances. Their coordination was flawless. They didn't rely on brute force but instead made up for their weaknesses with strategic teamwork.
As the beast lay dead, Xalin walked over to Kell, his curiosity getting the better of him. "Your shadow ability How exactly does it work?" he asked.
Kell looked at him, eyes glowing slightly as he studied Xalin. He wasn't used to being asked such questions, "You've got shadow power too, don't you?" he asked, his voice calm, not accusing. "But how are you using two abilities?"
Xalin sighed, feeling the weight of that question. "Its complicated. I don't even know how to use the shadow part yet."
Kell nodded thoughtfully and placed his hand on Xalins shoulder. He felt the strong shadow presence within Xalin and smiled faintly. "You've got potential, man. You just have to feel the shadow within you, like you do with your flames. Its different, though. The shadows respond to your emotions, your will. Picture what you want to do with them, and they'll follow. Here, let me help."
He guided Xalins shadow aura, showing him how to control it. Xalin concentrated, visualizing the shadows expanding outward just as he had seen Kell do earlier.
"Shadow Path," Xalin whispered, extending his shadow into a wide, hazy path. It wasn't perfect, but it was a start.
"Not bad," Kell said with a grin. The others clapped and cheered, and for a moment, Xalin allowed himself to feel proud. He had taken a step forward in understanding this new power within him.
But just as they prepared to move on, the scouter started beeping rapidly, flashing red. Everyone exchanged worried glances.
"This is bad," Selena muttered, her usually calm voice tinged with fear. "Something stronger is nearby."
From the trees emerged a beast far larger than anything they had encountered so far. It resembled a bear, its skin gleaming like diamonds, reflecting the light in a thousand directions. Its eyes glowed a menacing red, and every step it took made the ground tremble.
The scouter confirmed it: King Tier Beast Glareus.
Everyone froze. Even Kell, usually calm, took a step back. "Were not ready for this."
Selena summoned one of her creatures, but it was crushed easily under the bears immense weight. Rorans straw magic was useless against its impenetrable skin.
Xalin stepped forward, his mind racing. "Ill distract it! Everyone, run!" He summoned all his power, focusing his black flames into a massive fireball. "Fireball!" he shouted, launching it toward Glareus. The flames exploded on impact, but when the smoke cleared, the bear stood there, completely unharmed.
"That's never happened before" Xalin muttered, panic creeping into his voice.
With no other choice, Xalin gathered all his strength for one last attack. He planted his feet firmly on the ground, entering a stance he had never fully mastered. "Compass!" he shouted as dark lines appeared around the bear. He raised his arms, and an eruption of black flames shot forth, enveloping Glareus in a vortex of fire.
The others watched in awe as the firestorm raged around the beast. For a moment, it seemed like Xalins attack had worked.
But then Glareus leapt out of the flames, bloodied but still full of energy. It swiped its massive paw at Xalin, sending him flying into a boulder. He hit the rock with a sickening thud, nearly losing consciousness.
Just as the world began to fade, Xalins markings began to glow, white light spreading from his forehead down his spine to his legs. A hum filled the air as his body surged with power. He stood, eyes glowing pure white, his strength renewed.
Everyone watched in stunned silence.
"Those markings" Selena whispered. "Is he the Luminary?"
Xalin raised his hand, and the earth rumbled in response. A pillar of stone rose behind him cushioning his fall and a cocoon of air started encasing him as he rotated his arms and a stream of black fire and earth started circling him as he leapt forward, creating a massive crater upon landing. He made a slashing move with his hand and the Water from the surrounding trees was drawn toward him, forming a sharp blade that cut through Glareus with ease. The beast fell in two pieces, its life snuffed out.
But Xalins power didn't stop there. The air around him whirled violently, and pieces of earth began to rise as his black flames intensified And he started levitating.
Kell looked at him with a newfound sense of respect. "He had this much power all along?"
Lira, realizing the danger, ran toward Xalin. Her eyes glowed with determination as she used her blood manipulation to form a shield, cutting through the violent air currents. She reached for Xalins hand, her voice soft but firm. "Xalin you need to stop. Don't destroy everything. Please, calm down."
Xalin blinked, his power faltering. Slowly, the air around him began to settle, the flames extinguishing. The earth that had risen fell back into place as he descended, his eyes returning to their normal color. Lira caught him in an embrace as he stumbled, her voice soothing. "Its okay. You're safe. Everything's going to be alright."
Xalin opened his eyes, disoriented. "What happened?" He looked around at the destruction and grimaced. "Oh no I lost control again."
