Chapter 35: Chapter 35: The Spirit World Awakens
As the group settled in for their evening meditation, the air was cool and still, the trees rustling faintly under the moonlit sky. Xalin, with Terra, Kell, and Lira nearby, closed his eyes and focused on his breath. The calming flow of air filled his lungs as he centered himself. Yet, tonight felt different. His chest tingled, and a strange warmth began to spread across his body. His glowing markings—the symbols of the Luminary—flickered faintly before igniting in a brilliant, radiant light.
Suddenly, the world around him dissolved.
He wasn't meditating in the forest anymore. Xalin opened his eyes to find himself standing in a place entirely new and yet vaguely familiar. The Spirit World. He'd heard of it in legends, but never had he imagined it would be this vivid. The sky above shimmered with hues of purple and blue, swirling with ethereal clouds that never stayed still. The land stretched out into strange forms—floating islands, twisted trees with glowing leaves, and a river of light that flowed in midair. Spirits of all shapes, sizes, and colors moved through the landscape, some peaceful, others mischievous. Some hovered, others danced on the ground, and a few took the form of animals with radiant eyes that gleamed in the twilight.
Xalin felt different here—human, yes, but…ordinary. His powers were gone. He couldn't feel the pull of air, the roar of fire, or the rhythm of earth beneath his feet. The comforting presence of his elemental mastery was missing. A strange panic stirred in his chest.
"I see you've found your way here, finally," a voice chirped from behind him.
Startled, Xalin turned to find a small, plump spirit floating lazily in the air. It had a round, rotund body covered in soft, green fur with tiny wings that flapped lazily to keep it aloft. Its big round eyes glowed a vibrant orange, and its mouth was set in a perpetual grin. Its voice was light, cheerful, and brimming with energy.
"Welcome to the Spirit World, Luminary!" the spirit said, tilting its head as it studied Xalin. "Not every day we get a visitor like you."
Xalin blinked. "Who are you?"
The spirit gave a small, enthusiastic twirl in the air. "Oh, where are my manners? My name is Shiri! I'm one of the spirits who likes to wander about, help the lost, and chat with whoever will listen. Spirits, mortals, doesn't matter to me!" Shiri let out a bubbly laugh, his voice almost musical. "And you, my friend, look like you need a guide. This world can be…a bit confusing if you're new."
Xalin rubbed the back of his neck, looking around. "Yeah, you could say that. I'm Xalin, but you seem to know that already."
"Oh, of course! You're the Luminary, the big-shot mortal with the glowing markings! Everyone around here knows your kind. It's been a while since we've had a Luminary in these parts, though."
Xalin chuckled awkwardly. "Guess I'm the new guy."
"New or not, you've got a lot to learn. Come on, let's take a stroll! I'll show you around." Shiri zipped ahead, beckoning Xalin to follow.
Xalin hesitated but, realizing he had no other option, followed the spirit deeper into the mystical landscape. The Spirit World was even more magnificent up close. Towering trees with shimmering leaves waved softly in the breeze, their roots curling around stones that floated in the air. Some spirits floated by, watching Xalin curiously before continuing on their way. Others were more playful—small, rabbit-like creatures with golden fur and long tails darted through the air, chasing one another.
"Here in the Spirit World," Shiri began, "things are different. There's no real need for physical strength or flashy powers. It's all about connection, energy, and harmony. That's why you don't have your abilities here—your elemental powers belong to the mortal realm. But here…" Shiri floated a little closer, tapping his fluffy chest. "It's all about who you are on the inside."
"Right," Xalin nodded, though his mind still buzzed with questions. "So, how strong are you, exactly?"
Shiri let out a cheerful snort, clearly amused by the question. "Strong? Ha! I'm not what you'd call strong. I'm more of a…talker. I know things, I know people. Power here isn't like what you're used to. Some spirits are strong in energy, others are wise. I'm good at making friends, which is an important skill, believe me."
Xalin's curiosity piqued further. "And are there stronger spirits than you? Like, powerful ones?"
Shiri's grin grew wider. "Oh, you bet! Spirits here come in all kinds. Some of them are ancient, older than time itself. They could make the ground tremble just by breathing. But strength here isn't always about brute force. Take old Lady Tasi, for example. She's a gentle spirit, helps guide lost souls, but her wisdom? Unmatched. Then there's Burok, the Spirit of Storms. Now, he's got some serious power, but his temper makes him unpredictable."
As they continued wandering, Shiri introduced Xalin to a few of his "friends." One was a tall, graceful spirit resembling a crane with bright, shimmering feathers. It spoke in a soft, melodic voice and offered Xalin a greeting before gliding away. Another spirit was large and grumpy-looking, like a boulder with legs, who grumbled something about "meddlesome mortals" before stomping off into the mist.
"So, all these spirits, do they have a purpose?" Xalin asked, watching a small, cloud-like spirit drift by.
"Oh, we all have our own roles," Shiri said, twirling in the air. "Some guard certain places, like ancient forests or hidden temples. Others maintain the balance of nature—storms, rivers, the wind. Spirits like me? We're here to keep things running smoothly, making sure no one gets lost or stuck where they shouldn't be."
Xalin nodded, absorbing the information. The Spirit World was far more complex than he had imagined. And if spirits like Burok or Lady Tasi existed, what other powerful entities were hiding here?
As they strolled through the glowing fields, Xalin couldn't help but feel both amazed and overwhelmed. Without his powers, he was vulnerable, but this place held secrets—secrets that could unlock something deeper within him. There was a sense of peace here, but also mystery. It was as if the Spirit World was waiting for him to discover something vital.
"Tell me, Shiri," Xalin said, pausing to look at the swirls of energy floating in the air. "If I need to learn spirit magic, who should I be seeking out?"
Shiri grinned, twirling again in the air. "Now that's the right question, Luminary. I can introduce you to a few spirits who might know a thing or two about the power you're after. But I warn you, not all of them are as friendly as me."
Xalin smirked. "I didn't think they would be."
As they walked deeper into the Spirit World, Xalin realized that his journey was only just beginning. There was so much to learn, so much to uncover. And with Shiri by his side, perhaps he would find the key to unlocking his full potential as the Luminary.
