Chapter 36: A little demon cat
Caishen was meeting in his office with Gu Biming and a few executives from Peach hotel. Already, he had a headache despite having been in the meeting for less than an hour.
The meeting had to do with the construction of the new branch of Peach hotel in Shenyang city. The problem here was that Peach hotel wanted to cut the costs and kept asking Zhang construction to lower their asking price to take on the project.
For the third time, Caishen explained himself with the hope that Mr. Dao, the president of Peach hotel would understand what he was saying.
"It can't be done, if you give us less than we want then we will have to use shoddy materials which will result in shoddy work. Zhang construction doesn't do shoddy work.
If the building collapses before construction is finished or after who will take responsibility? Mr. Dao, you know as well as I do that you will point fingers at us.
If you don't want standard work, we cannot work together."
Mr. Dao glanced at the two executives who came with him and shook his head.
"Caishen, how long have we known each other? You can speak to me honestly about this project. Between this year and the last one, Zhang construction has lost at least ten major projects.
This is because you are not flexible, we have met with five other construction companies and three of them have already given us a quote matching what we think is appropriate. I am sure that if you look hard enough, you can find a way to do the same."
Caishen frowned and clenched his hands from under the table where no one could see. The negotiations were going nowhere, he had another meeting in an hour.
"Mr. Dao, why don't you work with one of those other companies. I don't think we will be able to work together on this project." he suggested.
Dao Xixiong was a proud man, he would lower his back in this case. He also seemed to be under the illusion that he was doing Caishen a favor.
He was an old man at the age of grandpa Zhang. Many thought that he would have retired by now but he refused to do so.
Among the people Caishen expected to see in this meeting, he was a surprising figure.
"Young Zhang, are you sure that you don't want my business? You should put your pride aside and think of your employees first. I have heard that Mao construction has stolen almost half of your clients. You should be thinking about how to grab them back and assert your position. I am advising you as someone that knows your grandfather. I will go back today, but think about it some more and get back to me."
Politely, Caishen escorted president Dao to the door and bid him farewell.
He returned and placed his head on his desk with a big sigh.
"Take your medicine."
Gu Biming opened a bottle of pills and handed Caishen two white pills.
Out of nowhere, a black figure dashed by and scratched Biming's hand.
Startled, the pills and the bottle fell to the ground.
"Shit, shit, shit, Ouch." Biming shook his hand and eye the cause of his pain angrily.
It was Caishen's black cat which he had brought because he planned to take it to a vet later on.
"What is that demon?" Biming pointed accusingly at the cat.
"My cat, are you okay?" Caishen asked him.
Biming looked at the scratch marks on his hand and glared at the cat.
"How can I be okay when your cat demon almost took my hand off? All I did was try to give you medicine."
Caishen raised up and looked into its eyes. The little thing folded it's eyes and meowed pitifully.
"Why did you scratch uncle Biming?" Caishen asked it.
"Uncle!!" bewildered beyond belief, Biming uttered.
He took a step back and bent down to pick up the pills which had fallen on the ground.
"I am not an uncle to that demon cat."
He separated the pills which had fallen and placed them on the a piece of paper with plans to throw them away later.
This was very expensive medicine, that demon cat had no idea how much a small pill cost.
"Take your medicine." he got two new pills and handed them to Caishen who was tickling the cat on it's chin.
The moment the pills came close to Caishen, the cat meowed fiercely and reached out with it's sharpened claws.
It's back was bent and it's hairs standing upright as it hissed, looking like it was ready to attack.
Biming squealed pulled his hand away quickly and the two pills went flying in the air.
Putting a safe distance between himself and the demon cat, Biming stared at Caishen with aggrieved eyes.
"Boss, I think your cat wants to murder me."
Caishen paid no mind to his friend that was being overly dramatic. Why would such a small cat want to kill Biming? Moreover, it had been sleeping in the corner of the office quietly for a while without disturbing anyone.
He was a smart man and he knew that animals did not react in certain ways for no reason.
To test the suspicion in his heart, he searched on his table for the pills which were scattered around.
Filled with a desire to throw a tantrum, Biming almost jumped up and down to express himself. "Boss, aren't you going to say anything? Are you really standing on the side of your demon cat? It tried to kill me two times you saw it for yourself."
"Stay silent, I am testing something." Caishen told him.
He brought a pill closer to his mouth, as if he was about to swallow it.
The cat meowed loudly, and slapped his hand. It did not scratch him the way it did Biming but it stopped him from taking the pill.
Something in Caishen's mind rung like an alarm. He stared at the pills and made a few presumptions in his mind.
"Biming, I need you to do something."
From where he was and with no intention of coming close, Biming peeped at Caishen, arching his neck curiously.
"What is it boss?"
Normally he would be ready to do anything but not today. He had no wish to be asked to feed that demon cat.
"Find a lab that we trust, three different labs and have these pills tested."
Biming, on hearing this came closer, more alarmed about the pills compared to his fear of the cat.
"What are you thinking?" he asked.
Caishen looked at the black cat which was now playing around with his index finger.
"I am thinking that the cat....." he shook his head and stopped talking for a few seconds. "I don't know what I am thinking but just send the pills to labs for testing. You have a friend that works as a medical examiner, give her a few as well."
He did not want to say out loud that the cat might have detected something in the pills. He would sound crazy because it made no sense at all.
