The Walking Dead : Rules of Survival

Chapter 46: Ch 46 : Pharmacy

The next day, when Shen Feng called me, I had already fallen into a deep sleep in the car.

The Husky had curled up into a ball on my legs, also dozing off with its eyes half-closed.

"When I saw this little guy last night, I knew you'd definitely like it."

Shen Feng opened the car door and immediately spotted the little round ball.

A rush of cold air flooded into the car, and the Husky wagged its tail and lifted its head, getting startled by the large figure (Shen Feng) suddenly appearing at the door.

I scooped it up into my arms, stepped out of the car, and smiled at Shen Feng.

"It's quite cute, its little appearance really lifts the mood."

Shen Feng chuckled. "Once Rongrong sees it, it's definitely going to be hers. Otherwise, she'll make a fuss for half the day."

"Anyway, I don't have time to take care of it. If Rongrong wants to play with it, that's fine. It'll save us some trouble watching her."

Shen Feng nodded noncommittally.

Actually, now that I think about it, Rongrong is probably one of the most well-behaved and considerate kids.

She's never caused us any trouble.

Sometimes, she's even more thoughtful than some adults.

Despite her young age, she knows how to consider others, just like that time when she was sick.

Even though she'd been ill for a while, she kept quiet about it so as not to cause us any trouble.

Although the consequence of her actions made things more troublesome for us, her intentions were always kind.

Sure enough, after waking up, Rongrong was originally sulking in Shen Xue's arms, still feeling down from the memory of my singing last night.

But as soon as she saw me walk into the supermarket holding the Husky, her face immediately changed with an astonishing speed, as if she'd flipped a switch.

In a flash, she jumped out of Shen Xue's arms, grinning widely, laughing and rushing towards me.

The Husky, still a little groggy, was startled when Rongrong grabbed it by the neck with exaggerated strength and pulled it into her arms, causing it to yelp and whine in fright.

I couldn't help but feel a little embarrassed standing by...

Would this little thing be played to death by Rongrong?

"Hey… Chen Yang, where did you get this dog from? It's so cute~"

Shen Xue also came over, squatting in front of Rongrong and teasing the fluffy little creature.

With Shen Xue by my side, I finally didn't have to worry about the little one's life for the moment.

Rongrong, after grabbing the dog, quickly gave it a name within two minutes: Zheng Yiyi.

Although I wasn't happy about Rongrong giving the dog her surname without permission, I thought it would be silly to argue with a little kid.

So, I secretly decided in my mind to rename the Husky Chen Yiyi.

That made me feel much better.

So, without anyone's approval, we decided to take in this fluffy little member.

At first, I thought Suo Tian would continue giving orders to move on, and we had already packed our things back into the car, ready to set off.

However, suddenly, a message came from Suo Tian saying we were to rest for a day.

Although it was a bit strange, with the gas tank full and supplies replenished at this supermarket, I couldn't figure out what needed to be rested for.

But then I remembered, we were part of their team.

Since the leader gave the order, we just had to follow it.

And stopping to rest was such a refreshing thing~

This meant we no longer had to endure the situation on the road where, every time we needed to pee, we had to figure out how to get the car to stop in a place with some cover.

Then, with awkwardness, we'd have to hide from everyone's gaze to take care of business.

Although there were still the occasional walkers passing by, there were so many well-trained people guarding the area, so I felt at ease letting Shen Xue take Rongrong and Yiyi out to play.

The people I was supposed to take turns with on watch had already gone back to sleep inside the supermarket.

Since I had already slept a little in the car earlier, I wasn't feeling very tired, so I decided to stay in the car to avoid the cold wind outside.

I'm really someone who hates the cold.

In the past, during winter, since the place I lived wasn't in the north and there was no central heating, I'd keep the air conditioning on 24 hours a day, never letting the temperature in the house drop below eighteen degrees.

Thankfully, this winter, while it has been pretty cold, there hasn't been any snow, and the temperatures haven't dropped to extreme levels.

As long as I'm bundled up in my winter coat, I can manage.

Suo Tian knocked on the car window at some point, and I quickly opened the door, pulling my coat tighter.

"What's up? Is there something wrong?"

Suo Tian raised an eyebrow, pointed at my arm, and slowly spoke, "You should take care of that injury."

I glanced around and replied, "I know it needs to be taken care of, gotta keep it clean. But the iodine's gone, and so is the bandage. The ones from your car were already used last time. Now there's no bandage, no iodine... How am I supposed to handle it?"

Suo Tian remained silent for a moment, then surveyed the surroundings before saying, "There should be a pharmacy in this town."

I was taken aback. "There's definitely a pharmacy in the town. Where doesn't have one? But... are you really going to the pharmacy to look for bandages and iodine?"

Suo Tian nodded and went around to the other side of the car, opening the door and sitting in the driver's seat.

"Hey, hey, hey, you're not seriously going to look for them, are you? If you do, the others will find out about my injury. You might trust that I'm fine, but your... uh... teammates might not believe that."

Suo Tian ignored me, opened the car window, and waved his hand at two black-clad figures not far away.

He then pointed to the road behind the town.

Before those two could react, he turned the key.

To be cautious, all the car keys were left in the vehicles.

At times like this, there was no need to worry about thieves stealing anything.

The market in this town was not large.

After Suo Tian drove around the town almost once, he finally found a medium-sized pharmacy.

However, the pharmacy's door was closed, with a roll-up gate in front, and there were two bloodied and mangled walkers staggering in front of it.

Of course, no matter how grotesque their appearance was, it didn't scare or bother me anymore.

I had seen so many walkers by now.

Looking at the fresh blood and flesh on them, I frowned.

These two must have been recently attacked by walkers because, after some time, blood and flesh would turn dark and rotten.

I suddenly thought about the feeling every time I smashed the walkers' heads.

It felt as simple as stabbing a watermelon without skin.

And as we all know, the skull is one of the hardest bones in the human body, and it's impossible for it to soften like that.

Some surgeries, like those requiring a craniotomy, take considerable effort.

So why were the walkers' heads so fragile?

I stared at the two walkers moving toward the car, my mind repeatedly analyzing the situation.

As Suo Tian got out of the car and pulled out his knife to chop the two walkers down, a bold idea suddenly flashed in my mind.

Could it be that something caused by this walker outbreak, like a virus, is having some effect on the human brain—perhaps softening or stimulating it in some way—causing death but leaving the brain intact?

Then, after death, the virus could be influencing or stimulating certain parts, leading to reanimation?

But why would they want to eat the living after coming back?

That was something I never quite understood.

Walkers are technically dead people, just reanimated by something unknown, yet these primal desires to feed on the living shouldn't even exist.

But reality was clearly not like that.

The walkers' craving for raw flesh had reached a maddening level.

Or perhaps it could be said that the only purpose of the walkers who stood up again was to consume meat—raw meat.

I shook my head, forcing myself to stop thinking about these troubling, unanswered questions.

Suo Tian had already walked up to the shutter door.

I took a moment to calm myself and got out of the car.

The pharmacy was located on the northern side of the town, along the road.

It was far less bustling than the gas station where we had stopped earlier.

There were not many shop signs here, and a large portion of the storefronts were probably used as residential spaces.

In small towns like this, the distinction between commercial buildings and residential homes was not as clear as in cities.

In this area, where every inch of land is precious, the houses here were much more spacious than the city apartments worth millions for a three-bedroom, one-living room setup.

Suo Tian took a hairpin from my head, fiddled with the lock for a moment, then returned the hairpin to me.

He bent down, gave a tug, and with a "clang," the door opened.

I had assumed that the door was locked, and there shouldn't be anything inside, so I let my guard down a little.

I started to put the hairpin back in my hair, but just as the door suddenly opened, a few growls came from inside.

I was startled, and instinctively reached for my dagger.

But as usual, my movements didn't keep up with my thoughts.

Before I could pull my hand back, a few walkers suddenly burst out from behind the shutter door.

One of them, a disheveled female walker, was leading the charge and quickly knocked me to the ground.

At that moment, I couldn't afford to be slow to react.

As I was knocked down, I immediately extended my hands and pushed against the walker's neck with all my strength.

The suddenness of the situation left me unprepared, and I couldn't summon much strength.

After knocking me down, the walker became wildly frantic, opening its mouth wide and trying to bite a chunk of flesh from me!

I quickly brought my free left hand into play and gripped the walker's neck tightly, while yelling at Suo Tian, "Suo Tian, help me!"

I could tell without even looking that Suo Tian was probably also tangled up with the other walkers and couldn't free himself to help me at the moment.

Just at that moment, another walker noticed me trapped beneath the female walker.

It let out a growl and started walking towards me.

My peripheral vision caught sight of it, and I broke into a cold sweat.

What should I do now?!

I couldn't spare any hands to block the incoming walker.

Just as I was about to lose my mind, I suddenly heard several gunshots—bang, bang, bang—and the chaotic growls of the walkers immediately quieted down.

There were a few dull thuds as they collapsed to the ground.

The only walker still struggling was the one I had my hands on, baring its teeth and trying to stretch its neck to bite me.

I held on with all my strength, not daring to let my guard down for even a second.

It seemed like Suo Tian had managed to free himself.

He quickly ran over to me, grabbed the walker and pulled it aside, then drove a knife into its body with a swift strike!

The walker finally fell silent.

I lay on the ground, my head spinning...

How many times had I been knocked down by walkers now?
