Chapter 31: Ch 31 : Suo Tian is missing
After Yangyang and the others left, I stood by the window, staring at the hallway outside for a long time in silence.
My mind was in chaos.
Why did Yangyang lie to me?
What exactly happened to Suo Tian?
Looking at the security window in front of me, I suddenly felt like a monkey locked in a cage, being observed by others.
They locked me up tightly because they were afraid I would hurt someone else.
The wound on my arm had been hurting the whole time, and now it was unbearable.
I quickly rolled up my sleeve, tearing off the bandages that were already soaked through inside and out.
I exposed the wound directly to the cold air.
Since I hadn't treated it properly during the day, the area around the wound was swollen and seemed to be infected.
The jagged teeth marks made the wound look grotesque.
I had originally wanted Yangyang to tell Shu Guang to come over and clean the wound for me.
But the sudden words from Yin Shangtang and their evasive attitude about Suo Tian made my heart race, causing me to forget about the wound for a moment.
It looks like I'll have to wait until tomorrow.
I hope it's not too serious.
I heard that if a wound isn't treated properly, it could get infected with tetanus, and in that case, they might have to amputate.
I lay back on the bed, staring at the ceiling for a long time.
Before I knew it, I must have fallen asleep.
During the night, I woke up multiple times in a daze.
I felt hot and cold, and my clothes were soaked through several times.
The last time I woke up from a nightmare, my head felt so heavy, as if it were filled with stones.
I couldn't lift it at all.
I wondered if the wound on my arm was being irritated by the cold sweat, as sharp stabs of pain quickly shot from the injury to my brain.
Lying under the blanket, I felt overwhelmed with a sense of helplessness and resentment.
My nose tingled, and tears uncontrollably welled up and slid down my cheeks, disappearing into my hair.
I didn't have the strength to lift my hand to wipe them away, so I just let the tears flow.
After all, no one was around now, and I just wanted to cry it all out.
The swelling at the back of my head, the pain in my arm, the unknown infection, the missing Suo Tian, and the approaching horde of walkers—all these things, along with a small sense of relief that I was still conscious and hadn't turned into one of those flesh-eating walkers outside.
These things felt like massive stones pressing down on my chest, making it hard to breathe.
The tears flowed more and more, and I began to feel more and more wronged.
Gradually, silent sobs turned into quiet sniffles, and finally, I just screamed out in anguish.
To hell with all this chaos!
To hell with the virus!
To hell with the walkers!
To hell with Song Meijing!
To hell with the infection!
I cried so deeply that I didn't even hear the footsteps in the hallway.
When I finally realized, I saw that the window was almost surrounded by people.
It took my brain a couple of seconds to process before I realized it was Li Jianguo and the others coming to "visit" me.
I guess my crying had startled them, because it wasn't until I somehow mustered the strength to roll out of bed and wrap myself in a blanket that they finally spoke up.
Time seemed to stand still for a few seconds...
I looked at the people standing outside the window, feeling a bit awkward.
The feeling of being watched by others intensified, and I thought to myself, I must look like a clown right now.
"Cough, cough..." Li Jianguo cleared his throat, using his fist to cover his mouth.
I felt like he was more trying to hide his laughter.
"Miss Chen's lung capacity is quite impressive."
I felt even more awkward, but I still forced a nonchalant wave at him.
"People with good physical fitness are like this. Brother Li, you guys came here to...?"
The earlier crying seemed to have released all the accumulated frustration inside me, and now my mind was clearer, and I even felt some strength returning to my body.
It seems that people really need to learn to vent every once in a while.
"Oh, we just came to check on you, little sister. It's not right to keep you, a young girl, locked up here. I really can't bear it," Li Jianguo said, his smooth, well-practiced words making it sound so comfortable that anyone listening would feel at ease.
I secretly rolled my eyes, thinking to myself, you old fox, you're just here to see if I've turned into a blood-drinking, flesh-eating madwoman, aren't you?
But I still kept a smile on my face.
"Brother Li, no need to worry, I'm fine. It's just this wound. Yesterday, everyone was too busy to take care of it, and no one came to clean it up. It's hurting now."
I lifted my arm, reminding him that someone needed to treat it.
"Ah, look at my brain! How could I forget something so important? Quick, quick, go get Shu Guang over here, an infected wound is a serious matter!"
Li Jianguo's expression suddenly changed, looking genuinely anxious.
I couldn't help but laugh inwardly.
What's the point of acting? You probably wish I were dead, right?
Before, our two sides were like leaders of half the school, always pretending to be friendly while secretly harboring animosity, cooperating only for our own interests and the pressure of the situation.
Now that something's happened to me, Mei Jing has obviously sided with them.
Judging by how Yangyang and the others were acting, it seems like something's going on with Suo Tian too.
For someone like Li Jianguo, this is the perfect opportunity to take over the whole school, with the timing, location, and people all in his favor.
Looking at that fake, insincere face by the window, I couldn't help but sneer inside.
Some people are born to do evil, masters of disguise.
Just by the fact that Yangyang and the others didn't show up with Li Jianguo, I could tell that the situation in the school had probably already changed.
Shu Guang quickly arrived, carrying a small medical kit, out of breath, looking like he had run all the way here.
Li Jianguo took out a key and unlocked the door, letting Shu Guang into the room before locking it again from the outside.
I smiled and pretended not to understand, asking, "Brother Li, why lock the door? Shu Guang still needs to go out later."
Mei Jing, who had been standing in the crowd, spoke coldly, "Brother Li is just being cautious, in case something unexpected happens."
"That makes sense, definitely better to be safe. Mei Jing, you're really perceptive, you can see through everything at a glance," I said, my tone full of sarcasm.
Mei Jing's face changed colors, alternating between pale and flushed.
Her eyes were fixed on me, and from the look on her face, she probably wanted to tear off a piece of my flesh just to feel better.
After Shu Guang checked my arm, he inhaled sharply and cursed under his breath, "Damn it! It's infected."
He quickly took a bottle of iodine from his medical kit and carefully treated the area around the wound.
Then, without hesitation, he pulled my arm over and poured the iodine directly onto the wound to wash it.
The iodine stung intensely, and I instinctively bit my lip to hold back the pain.
Shu Guang handed me a thermometer and asked me to hold it in place before sprinkling some anti-inflammatory powder onto the wound.
Then he took out a bandage and started wrapping it.
After finishing the bandaging, Shu Guang also took my temperature, and upon seeing the results, he visibly relaxed.
He looked at me and said, "Chen Yang, you're really strong. Most people in this situation would already be delirious from the fever, but your temperature is still normal?"
I shot him a glare. "What are you trying to say? Do you only feel satisfied if I have a fever?"
"Of course not, I'm just glad for you," Shu Guang replied, packing up his things.
He glanced at my arm and added, "But since the infection isn't too serious yet, you should get an anti-inflammatory injection."
An injection?!
My face changed suddenly, and I instinctively wrapped the blanket around my lower body, ignoring Li Jianguo and Mei Jing outside the window.
I shook my head vigorously at Shu Guang. "No injections!"
Shu Guang froze for a moment before bursting into laughter.
"Chen Yang, you don't blink when you're cutting down walkers, but you're afraid of getting an injection?"
"Mind your own business! Anyway, just do whatever you want. You can make me take the medicine or put it on an IV, just as long as it's not an injection!" I responded, still flustered.
Shu Guang shook his head with a smile. "Alright, we'll go with an IV. It's more effective."
The school's infirmary was well-stocked with medicines, but Li Jianguo didn't want me to leave this room.
So, unfortunately, Shu Guang had to go to the infirmary to get the medication before coming back.
After Shu Guang left, Li Jianguo locked the door again, and a group of people followed behind him, walking away in a large procession.
Only Mei Jing stood still, watching me without moving.
I sat on the bed, staring at her through the security window, knowing she had something to say.
I waited for her to speak.
But minutes passed, and my eyes were starting to feel sore, yet she still hadn't said anything.
This woman is really patient!
Ever since I started harboring resentment toward Mei Jing, the names I gave her kept getting worse.
I used to be a role model for others, but now I've started swearing like a sailor.
Is this really who I am deep down?
Just as I was lost in thought, Mei Jing finally spoke, but her question left me stunned.
She asked, "Where did Suo Tian go?"
I stared at her, feeling a bit confused. "What do you mean by that?"
Where did Suo Tian go?
She doesn't know where Suo Tian is?
This school is so small, how could she not know where Suo Tian is?
Considering how cautious Yangyang and the others were last night, and with her asking like this, it could only mean one thing…
Suo Tian isn't at the school anymore!
I had already been locked up here since yesterday morning.
The fact that she's asking me about him proves that Suo Tian had disappeared before yesterday morning!
That would explain why, even with all the commotion yesterday, Suo Tian never showed up!
As Mei Jing answered, my mind raced, rapidly connecting the scattered clues, and I came to a conclusion that was almost certain.
"Shen Feng and the others didn't tell you?" Mei Jing was briefly stunned, then gave a small, mocking laugh.
"They really are considerate of you."
"Cut the crap! Just tell me what the hell is going on!" I interrupted her sharply.
Mei Jing shot me a glance, her expression a little angry, but she still answered, "I haven't seen him since the night before last. Yesterday, we searched the whole school and couldn't find a trace of him. Even one of the emergency supply packs we had prepared for escape was missing."
"So you're saying Suo Tian... left?"
Even though I had already guessed it, hearing Mei Jing say it out loud still made it hard to believe.
"Why? Why would he leave?!"
"Why? How the fuck should I know?!" Mei Jing screamed furiously.
"Even you — the slut who slept with him — don't know, so how the hell would I?!"
I stared at her in shock...
How did she know?
Mei Jing's chest was heaving violently, a clear sign she was struggling to contain her anger.
Realizing she had lost her composure, she took a few deep breaths before speaking again, "Looks like you really don't know. Then just pretend I never asked."
Before turning to leave, Mei Jing tilted her head slightly and said one last thing:
"So what if you slept with him? In the end, you still got abandoned, didn't you? Chen Yang, with someone as despicable as you, how is it that you're not the one who got bitten to death?"
She said it very calmly.
