Chapter 44: Chapter 43: Give and Take at the Dojo!!
Days after finals, Yugen, Tatsuya, and Miyuki arrived at Kokonoe Temple—not for Tatsuya's training, but for Miyuki's. Specifically, she was practicing for Mirage Bat, her event in the Nine Schools Competition. Unlike the original story, Miyuki moved with light grace, and Tatsuya watched his sister's growth with mixed feelings.
Two months earlier, as Yugen got used to student council work and started hitting the school's dojo, Miyuki made a bold request.
"Please… teach me Shinkage-ryu!"
As a pure mage, Miyuki saw Yugen—same type but skilled in swordsmanship and martial arts—as the perfect teacher. Wanting to honor her wish, Yugen checked with Tatsuya and Yakumo. Tatsuya, defeated by Miyuki's tearful plea, gave in with a sigh: "If it's for Miyuki." Yakumo, sounding gleeful, said, "I'm looking forward to you training her to surpass Tatsuya-kun." Total setup. A mage stronger than her bodyguard? Makes no sense.
As a dojo assistant instructor, Yugen got Gouzou's approval, who was thrilled to have a disciple trained, promising to handle Miyuki's mother, Miya. An email from Miya—despite Yugen not sharing his address—read, "Take care of my wayward daughter." The cryptic tone made Yugen want to clutch his head.
Katsuto, the club president, easily approved dojo use, framing it as a "light exercise club" to avoid trouble.
Given Miyuki's magic traits, Yugen focused on martial arts basics: flexibility and body movement. Shinkage-ryu blends jujutsu, aikido, karate, Chinese martial arts, Muay Thai, capoeira, and more. It's like a fictional style Yugen vaguely recalled: "Take all you gain, make it your martial art, your shield." That's Shinkage-ryu's creed.
Surprisingly, Miyuki picked it up fast, thanks to solid basics. Her dojo outfit, though… yeah, it's distracting, no denying it. Sparring with her demands focus, or she'll knock you out cold. She got the outfit at Kokonoe Temple—deep meaning or not, Yugen briefly considered shipping that lecherous monk Yakumo back to the main temple.
Training wasn't supposed to be a spectacle, but other club members started peeking. When Kirihara showed up, Yugen had Sayaka drag him away. Later, Miyuki grilled him about having Sayaka's private number with a terrifying smile. Explaining it was for emergencies like this barely calmed her.
When the karate club tried to poach Miyuki, Yugen unleashed Shinkage-ryu's secret technique, [Seiryu Storm Kick], on them and glared at their backup with a hint of killing intent. Senior or not, trying to drag off a girl is guilty as charged. Overkill? No magic used, just knocked them out—totally safe.
It felt like Yugen caused work for the Discipline Committee, but Morisaki, responding, was impressed: "You're strong even without magic." Sawaki, also there, invited him to the Martial Magic Arts club: "Come join us, you're welcome." Not thrilled about guys' admiration. Somehow, Miyuki's affection skyrocketed, and Tatsuya, during a Discipline Committee patrol, clapped Yugen's shoulder, saying, "You're a mystery but reliable." One word too many, Tatsuya.
Word spread, and Leo, Touya, and Erika started showing up. Yugen didn't teach them martial arts like Miyuki but let them work out with judo-level sparring. Other student council members joined, moving their paperwork-stiffened bodies under the "light exercise club" guise. Secretly, Yugen was shocked when Miyuki threw Erika in a spar—had she powered up like his siblings?
Tatsuya didn't join, held back by Yakumo's condition: "Take a point off me, and I'll let you train with Yugen." That monk's definitely enjoying this. Tatsuya still checked in during patrols.
Back to the present.
They rode electric motorcycles to Kokonoe Temple, not using magic-enhanced running for competition practice. Tatsuya and Miyuki were stunned Yugen had a license and bike. To avoid confusion, Tatsuya's bike was black, Yugen's silver. Silver's flashy? If needed, Yugen could use ninja tricks for perception disruption, earning wry smiles from both.
The Kudou family visit paid off, though Yugen nearly unleashed killing intent when the head mentioned marriage. Riding solo would've been fine, but Miyuki rode behind Yugen, her closeness felt through the suit. Yugen brushed it off to avoid accidents. Tatsuya watched with a faint smirk. Someone make this emotionless guy blush, Yugen prayed silently.
At Kokonoe Temple, Yakumo greeted them roughly, as usual. Startled, Miyuki clung to Yugen's back, whispering, "D-Don't look!" Unable to glance back, Yugen made an awkward face. Tatsuya noticed subtly, while Yakumo shot Yugen a cryptic smile.
Mirage Bat practice wasn't full-scale but involved Miyuki slicing through Yakumo's ancient illusion magic, [Onibi], with a short staff. Her CAD, overhauled for Nine Schools specs, mimicked real conditions. A versus format would be ideal, but practicing here was enough.
After slicing over 50 orbs, Tatsuya signaled a break. He handed Yakumo a drink, taking over Miyuki's usual role since she was training. "Thank you, Master, for lending the space and sparring."
"No problem," Yakumo said. "Miyuki-kun's my cute disciple too. She's gotten fit, training under that guy you're interested in. I'm almost outdone."
"Yugen's been thoughtful in her training," Tatsuya said.
They watched Yugen offer Miyuki a drink, which she took and sipped. Tatsuya thought her Shinkage-ryu training was bold, but Yugen's one-on-one guidance reassured him as a brother, no denying it.
"His martial arts are unique, even among ancient styles," Yakumo said. "They suit Miyuki well."
"He said it's thanks to your teachings," Tatsuya replied. "But I was surprised Yugen can use ancient magic."
As they spoke, Yugen formed seals, activating ancient magic—a warding barrier and floating [Onibi]. Miyuki leaped, slicing them again. Yugen hadn't planned to use ancient magic, but Yakumo's "He can handle this" and Miyuki's "Please!" pushed him to shout internally, Fine, I'll do it! and cast it. Ninja techniques were secret, so he kept quiet, and Tatsuya didn't pry, sensing mage business.
"Shinkage-ryu's ninjutsu incorporates my style," Yakumo said. "Wards and [Onibi] are easy for me, but mastering them at his age? That's his talent. Want to chase my [Onibi]?"
"No, it's Miyuki's day," Tatsuya said, sensing Yakumo's playful trap. Then his [Eyes] caught something—a presence shifting to intent. "Who's there?"
"Oh, Haruka-kun," Yakumo called, welcoming.
"I expected Master to notice, but not Shiba-kun," Haruka said.
"You can't fool his eyes by hiding presence," Yakumo said. "You'd need to fake it. Yugen-kun could do it easily."
"Noted," Haruka replied.
Miyuki, noticing Haruka, glanced at Yugen and landed. Yugen dispelled the ward and [Onibi], deeming practice impractical with a sudden guest.
"Why's Ono-sensei here?" Miyuki asked.
"No need to be wary, Tatsuya-kun," Yakumo said. "Haruka-kun's my disciple."
"Sorry for interrupting Mirage Bat practice," Haruka said. "Shiba-san, you're in the Nine Schools?"
"Correct," Yakumo said. "Miyuki-kun's in Ice Pillars Break and Mirage Bat; Yugen-kun next to her is in Ice Pillars Break and Monolith Code."
"Two events each? That's amazing!" Haruka said.
The blatantly staged exchange irked Tatsuya. Yugen cut in. "Master, maybe explain before Tatsuya explodes?"
"Good call," Yakumo said. "Haruka-kun, okay?"
"You'd talk behind my back anyway," Haruka said.
Yugen sighed in relief, catching Tatsuya's surprised look. Glancing at Miyuki for context, her wry smile said it all. Use words, not looks—though I'm guilty too.
"With her consent," Yakumo said, "Haruka-kun's a Public Safety secret agent."
"Technically, I became one after starting as First High's counselor," Haruka clarified. "I trained under Master Yakumo for a year, two years ago, so Tatsuya-kun's my senior. Then I trained under Ueyama-sensei, so Miyama-kun's my senior too."
A year's training for that level of stealth is impressive. Yugen had sensed Haruka during ancient magic casting but stayed silent, no need to mention it. Surprising, though—Gouzou training her directly? He's loyal but likely found her traits intriguing. Many of Gouzou's top disciples are insiders or Public Safety agents, so connections run deep. Knowing secrets? That's Ueyama's influence.
"Your stealth was impressive," Tatsuya said.
"It's my magic trait," Haruka replied.
"BS mage, then," Tatsuya said.
"I hate that label," Haruka pouted.
Her teenage-like sulk drew a chuckle from Tatsuya. Born Specialized mages, with innate "superpowers," are often seen as lesser in modern magic's diversity, but in the right role, they outshine versatile mages.
"Shiba-kun, Miyama-kun, my Public Safety role is classified, so keep it off-record," Haruka said.
"Understood," Tatsuya said.
"I won't talk," Yugen said. "In return, if Blanche-like groups pop up, give us a heads-up."
"Deal. Give and take," Haruka agreed.
If Public Safety doesn't act, Yugen could use [Yata Mirror] to rip out syndicate info and crush them. Poor Haruka, though—might toss her a "side hustle" to handle it.
The Nine Schools in summer and Thesis Competition in fall are major events for magic high schools. Only one person has topped both: a woman who swept Women's Speed Shooting and Ice Pillars Break in rookie and main tournaments for three years, securing First High's overall victory, and in her third year, won the Thesis Competition with a paper on the "Weighted System Negative Code," a cardinal code, stunning all nine schools.
Mayumi, lunchbox in hand, entered the student council room with Mari but froze before sitting. Mari tilted her head.
"Mayumi? You're pale. What's wrong?"
"Uh, uh…" Mayumi stammered.
As if she'd seen the end of the world, Mayumi's terror puzzled Mari. Turning, Mari saw a woman in summery, modest casual clothes, her long hair tied forward, smiling gently. Mari blinked.
"Mari, been a while," the woman said. "I'm here for the current president."
"K-Kana-san!? Long time!" Mari said.
"Yep. Now, Mari, grab that scheming fox idiot," Kana said.
"Got it! You're under arrest!" Mari declared.
"Mari, you traitor!" Mayumi wailed.
Kana Miyama, Motoharu's second daughter, a second-year at National Magic University. Former student council president, she led First High to reclaim the Nine Schools title. In her third year, she won the Thesis Competition with the Weighted System Negative Code. The only one to defeat the current third-year "strongest generation" entirely.
By power dynamics, Mari had no choice but to restrain Mayumi at Kana's command.
