Chapter 36: Chapter 35: New Friends and Old Questions
Handed keys by the school nurse Reimi Yasuyado, a female student was getting help from others to carry an injured Hunting Club member. Even with all the club's lively members pitching in, they were short-handed. So, Honoka and Shizuku volunteered to assist.
The Biathlon Club seniors had offered to help, but with their demo coming up, Honoka and Shizuku stepped in instead.
"Thanks! You're lifesavers!" the girl said.
"N-no problem. Helping each other out, right?" Honoka replied.
"Can't ignore someone who looks unwell," Shizuku added.
Her high energy made Honoka flinch, but Shizuku responded with her usual unflappable calm.
"Oh, I'm Eimi Akechi. Quarter Japanese-British, formally Amelia=Eimi=Akechi=Goldie. Call me Eimi!"
Her name was a mouthful, but the nickname saved them from worrying about what to call her. Since she introduced herself, Honoka and Shizuku shared their names.
"I'm Honoka Mitsui. Nice to meet you, uh… Eimi?" Honoka said, hesitating over the nickname.
Eimi beamed, grabbing Honoka's hand. "Nice to meet you, Honoka!"
"I'm Shizuku Kitayama. Nice to meet you, Eimi," Shizuku said.
"Yup, you too, Shizuku!" Eimi replied.
Shizuku introduced herself with her trademark calm, and just like that, Honoka and Shizuku made a new friend.
While Honoka and Shizuku bonded with Eimi, Tatsuya was called to the Club Alliance headquarters to report on an arena incident. They asked two things: why he didn't intervene sooner and whether only Kirihara used magic.
"I didn't intervene because I hadn't seen the issue firsthand," Tatsuya said. "Plus, I judged minor injuries to be their own responsibility."
"Reasonable," the questioner said. "And only Kirihara used magic?"
"Yes," Tatsuya replied.
Technically, only Kirihara succeeded in casting, but Tatsuya kept that to himself.
"So, Juumonji," the questioner said, "the disciplinary committee won't pursue Kirihara. What's your take?"
"I'll follow the committee's decision," Katsuto said. "No need to waste their leniency."
Facing Katsuto Juumonji, the Club Alliance head, Tatsuya let out a quiet breath of awe. Katsuto's muscular frame, visible even through his clothes, and his overwhelming presence put Tatsuya on guard.
(Like a rock wall of a man,) Tatsuya thought.
"You're not hurt, right, Tatsuya-kun?" Mayumi asked, concerned.
"No, I'm fine," Tatsuya said simply.
He hadn't taken a single hit, so injury wasn't an issue.
"Oh, by the way," Mayumi said, "Nurse Yasuyado wants to ask you something, so stop by the health room on your way out."
"Understood," Tatsuya said.
Probably about Kirihara's injuries, Tatsuya figured. He nodded to Mari's order and left the headquarters.
"Well, guess we're done here," Mari said.
"Yup," Mayumi agreed. "He sure made a splash right after joining."
"Exceeded expectations," Katsuto added.
Once Tatsuya was gone, Mari and Mayumi discussed his performance. Katsuto listened silently, polite enough not to leave abruptly.
"Brushing off a B-rank lethal spell like it's nothing," Mari said.
"Some kind of countermeasure?" Mayumi wondered.
"No idea," Mari said. "Juumonji, you?"
"Don't know either," Katsuto said. "Ask the students who saw it?"
"I did," Mayumi said, disappointed. "They just said the high-frequency blade's noise was followed by something worse that made them nauseous."
"No serious injuries, and he resolved it," Katsuto said. "That's what matters."
"Right," Mayumi said. "Good thing Tatsuya-kun's unharmed too."
"You're awfully focused on him, Mayumi," Mari teased. "Is it that?"
"What?!" Mayumi yelped.
Their usual banter unfolded, but Katsuto stood still, arms crossed, lost in thought.
As instructed by Mari, Tatsuya stopped by the health room. He wasn't injured, so he wondered what this was about but decided to answer what he could—while dodging what he couldn't.
"Tatsuya Shiba, Class 1-E," he announced.
"Come in~!" came a languid reply.
The drawn-out response nearly tripped him up, but he steadied himself and entered.
"Excuse me," he said.
"Sorry for calling you so late," Reimi said.
"It's fine," Tatsuya replied.
He wasn't sure if he found her off-putting or just tricky to deal with.
"I'm Reimi Yasuyado, First High's nurse," she said. "So, what did I want to ask you?"
Tatsuya, eager not to keep Miyuki waiting, wanted to wrap this up quickly to meet her at the school gate before her mood soured.
"No need to rush. Sit down?" Reimi offered.
"I'll stand," Tatsuya said.
"Alright," Reimi said. "When you faced Kirihara, some Hunting Club kids got psion wave sickness."
"…" Tatsuya stayed silent.
"I was wondering if you had any guesses about the cause," she said.
"Why would you think I'd know?" Tatsuya asked.
Her sharp intuition, despite her casual demeanor, put him on edge. Did she know something he wanted hidden? But it was just his overthinking.
"No real reason," Reimi said. "But you aced the entrance exams, right? So I thought you might know something."
"My written scores were good, but my overall rank is near the bottom," Tatsuya said.
"Really?" Reimi asked.
"I'm Course 2—a reserve, so to speak," Tatsuya said.
With a wry smile, he pointed to his shoulder, repeating the gesture he'd used with Mayumi before the entrance ceremony.
"Still, you handled Kirihara without a scratch," Reimi said. "That's impressive!"
"If that's all, may I go?" Tatsuya asked.
"Oh, let me check you for injuries," Reimi said. "You might not feel pain but still be hurt."
"I'm fine," Tatsuya insisted.
"Listen to your nurse," she said.
Tatsuya, suspecting she was close to his age, watched with a suppressed smile as she approached with childish gestures to check him.
"All good!" Reimi declared.
"As I said," Tatsuya replied.
"Had to check myself," she said. "You're pretty fit, huh?"
"I train a bit," Tatsuya said.
"Tatsuya Shiba, huh? I'll remember you," Reimi said.
Tatsuya, unsure why she'd remember him, could only manage a, "Ha…"
"Good work today. Come back anytime," Reimi said.
"I'd rather not frequent the health room," Tatsuya said.
"Fair enough," Reimi laughed.
Seeing her laugh at his serious reply, Tatsuya gave a slight, wry smile and left the health room.
