Chapter 34: Chapter 33: The Strategist Drowns in Strategy
After parting with Leo and Erika, I infiltrate the abandoned factory. Faint gunshots echo—probably Katsuto and Kirihara duking it out.
"Sounds like they're in combat," I say.
"I don't hear anything…" Miyuki replies.
"Don't worry, it's my innate quirk," I say.
The person I reincarnated into—Yuzuru Mitsuya—was frail by nature. The cause? An overly acute sense of hearing, tied to the same congenital hyper-perception as my sister Shina, but stronger. It threw my physical body and psion body out of balance. Reincarnation altered my Eidos, the individual information stored in the Idea dimension, turning me healthy.
Still, the sharp hearing didn't vanish. I learned to control it using psion flow, maintaining magical perception without dulling my senses. It's like the "circulate mana like blood" training from fiction, but it worked. My magic deployment speed and psion capacity spiked as a side effect—a secret I keep to myself for now.
I taught Shina the same hearing control technique. In a few years, she'll live normally without earmuffs. She's powering up too, in her own way. Not that I want to dwell on how she's powering up.
Anyway, back to it.
Tatsuya's using his "Elemental Sight" to scan for presences ahead. I know about it—rare for him to share, but he told me. During the Okinawa Defense Battle three years ago, he sensed a power in me surpassing his own. My "family" approved the disclosure. Even Miyuki was shocked.
In return, I revealed my "Tenjin's Eye" to Tatsuya and Miyuki—the only two who know. It's got traits beyond "Elemental Sight," but that's a story for another time.
"No guns on that one," I say. "A magician… probably their leader. Setting up a grand ambush."
"Doesn't matter," Tatsuya says. "We move in."
They must know First High's assault team is down. Blanche has ties to police and security groups—known intel. We step into a pitch-black room. After a few steps, a shutter opens, and evening light floods in. My eyes adjust, revealing soldiers with raised guns—and a figure dressed like a priest. He speaks with a knowing tone.
"Welcome, Tatsuya Shiba-kun. And that lovely lady must be Miyuki Shiba. You're Yuzuru Mitsuya, right?"
"So, you're Tsukasa Hajime, Blanche's Japan branch leader," I say.
Spotting him, I draw my jet-black gun-shaped CAD, "Odin," from my right holster. Without a glance, Tatsuya aims his specialized CAD, "Trident," at Hajime.
"Surrender your weapons and put your hands behind your head," Tatsuya says.
No killing intent from him. Even if there was, I wouldn't notice. He controls it perfectly, prioritizing his master's protection—a true Yotsuba Guardian. Hajime, unfazed, praises Tatsuya.
"Not rattled, huh? Impressive. But I know you're not exactly skilled at magic, are you?"
At his signal, the soldiers raise their guns—an obvious threat. Then he says to Tatsuya, "Here's my offer: join us, Tatsuya Shiba."
He admits the assault cost them, but they want Tatsuya's "Cast Jamming" that doesn't rely on Antinite. They used Sayaka to approach him and his half-brother Tsukasa Ko to attack. Miyuki stays silent, but her cold glare betrays her fury at them exploiting her brother.
"So, targeting me was to isolate Tatsuya?" I say. "Explains the excessive tails."
"What? First I'm hearing of it…" Miyuki says.
"I blew them away with minimal single-system movement magic," I say. "Left cleanup to the dojo disciples. Tatsuya, you noticed, right?"
"Yeah," Tatsuya says. "But they had no hostility toward Miyuki, so I ignored them. Figured you wouldn't lag behind."
That's another reason we didn't involve the Juumonji family. Gozo had a hunch about Blanche's leader and potential hostility toward me. He assigned top dojo swordsmen as shadow escorts. I used them, neutralizing Blanche's tails with minimal psion output to avoid residual traces, leaving cleanup to the escorts. What happened to those guys? Too much hassle to ask.
Hearing me, Hajime grabs his glasses' frame, sensing the threat.
"Ha, as expected from someone tied to the Ten Master Clans," he sneers. "But coming here so naively? Just kids."
He tosses his glasses high, sweeps back his hair, and reveals his right eye, glaring at Tatsuya. "Tatsuya Shiba, join us!"
Hajime tries something, but a shockwave from his left hand knocks him to the ground. Tatsuya seizes the moment, using "Trident" to activate "Decomposition," disabling the soldiers' guns. Miyuki's eyes widen at the fluid sequence, but Tatsuya and I stay dead serious, exchanging words with only our gazes.
"Sorry, Tatsuya, for leaving the guns to you," I say.
"No, it helped," he says. "Caught them off guard."
"Come on, a mere optical vibration spell wouldn't faze you, mental interference or not," I say.
"Huh? What?" Miyuki stammers.
Miyuki's not the only one confused—Hajime and the soldiers are too. I point "Odin" at him.
"Tossing glasses to keep eyes up, using a hidden CAD in your left hand to cast—classic 'misdirection by gaze' trick," I say. "I saw your glasses had no gimmick. Using optical vibration magic to flash signals and mess with memories? Like some shady cult. That's you guys."
"Eek!" Hajime squeals, retreating behind soldiers.
Miyuki steps up to handle the scene. Tatsuya and I stride forward as if the soldiers aren't there. One pulls a knife, lunging at Tatsuya's back. Miyuki's not that careless.
"My… body…" the soldier gasps.
"Fool," Miyuki says.
The knife-wielder freezes solid, collapsing before reaching Tatsuya. We turn back, facing Miyuki.
"Go easy, Miyuki," Tatsuya says. "They're not worth dirtying your hands."
"Agreed," I say. "But it's your call."
"Understood. Be careful, both of you," Miyuki says.
As we chase Hajime, the soldiers gape, stunned. Miyuki's cold, furious voice snaps them back.
"You're unlucky," she says. "If you hadn't targeted Onii-sama, or if your allies hadn't gone after Yuzuru-san, you'd have gotten off lightly."
She activates her CAD, conjuring a massive magic circle around the soldiers. It's beyond cold—painfully freezing. Her specialty: vibration deceleration magic, specifically the high-difficulty extreme freezing spell.
Wide-Area Vibration Deceleration Magic: Niflheim
The soldiers freeze helplessly as nitrogen itself liquefies.
"I'm not as merciful as those two," Miyuki says. "Pray you survive."
Every soldier in the room is frozen by her magic. The "world's strongest" magician, inheriting her brother's chilling aura—no one there could sense her humanity.
Tatsuya and I track presences—or rather, scan with our "Eyes"—toward the deepest part. Knowing dialogue's pointless, Tatsuya uses "Decomposition" to disable guns beyond the door. As we enter, Hajime activates a bracelet, unleashing "Cast Jamming." Soldiers with rings do the same. In such intense jamming, most magicians couldn't cast, and Hajime smirks, certain of victory.
"How's that, magicians? No one in the world can cast under this much 'Cast Jamming.' You're defenseless!"
"Not even third-rate," I say. "You know where Antinite comes from, right?"
"Ukrainian-Belarusian re-separatist patrons," Tatsuya says. "Backed by the Great Asian Union."
"All that, and you'll still die here without magic," Hajime sneers.
He doesn't get it. We could handle these guys without magic. To prove another point, I unlock "Odin's" system.
"Canceler activated."
The Force Silver Custom CADs—"Valkyrie" and "Odin"—have black-box mechanisms, including the "Cast Jamming Canceler." It generates psion waves to neutralize jamming noise. I could counter it myself, but this is a field test. Hajime gapes as "Odin" deploys its activation sequence. Before he speaks, I pull the trigger, unleashing a lightning-based emission spell. The soldiers collapse, unconscious, as the jamming falters in their shock.
"Impossible… magic under 'Cast Jamming'?" Hajime stammers.
Escape's his only option, but blades suddenly pierce the wall from the other side. As it crumbles, Kirihara appears, impressed by the fallen soldiers but glaring at Hajime.
"Not bad, Shiba-bro, Mitsuya," Kirihara says. "This guy?"
"Tsukasa Hajime, Blanche's Japan branch leader," I say.
"Him…" Kirihara growls.
Tatsuya's calm words flip a switch in Kirihara. His goal: crush the guy who corrupted Sayaka's sword. He charges, deploying close-range vibration magic "High-Frequency Blade" on his katana.
"You're the one who messed with Mibu!" Kirihara roars.
"Eek!" Hajime yelps, raising his arm to cast jamming. But Kirihara's fury—or vengeance for Sayaka—outspeeds him, slicing off Hajime's arm with the vibrating blade.
Kirihara moves for a follow-up, but a voice stops him.
"Kirihara, that's enough," Katsuto says.
"Understood, Leader," Kirihara replies, sheathing his sword.
Hajime's the Japan branch leader of Blanche, but we're just high schoolers, not soldiers. Katsuto, mindful of that line, stops the bleeding on Hajime's arm. Confirming he's unconscious, Katsuto turns to me.
"That's all of them?" he asks.
"Probably," I say. "Please handle the cleanup."
"Planned to," Katsuto says. "Tell Gozo-sama we caused trouble."
As we talk, Tatsuya casts a spell toward where Miyuki faced the soldiers. Only he and those who sensed it would understand.
