The Traveling Wizard of Worlds

Chapter 37: Being tricked

"Ugh, so uncomfortable..." August leaned against a tree, retching and spitting out some saliva.

The sensation of teleportation was truly unpleasant; his head spun, and he felt as if his body was constantly being torn apart.

When he regained his senses, he found himself deep within a dense, unfamiliar forest, where towering trees obscured the rising sun and birds foraged among the leaves.

"Where is this place?" August felt a sense of unease; his destination was Luton City, and this certainly didn't look like a city.

"Was I tricked?"

Mardo seemed to use teleportation frequently, and his teleportation technique must have been very mature; through Mardo's brief introduction, August also learned that the "Spider" was a mysterious organization whose members were spread across the continent.

Every city that reached a certain population size had a "Spider" member stationed there, managing the business of transporting people and goods.

The origin of this organization was impossible to trace, but its members were spread across the continent, and its influence could not be underestimated.

It's not that no one had coveted their teleportation technology, but these individuals were even more elusive than snakes; they would hide at the slightest hint of unfavorable news, and precisely because of their business, they were incredibly well-informed, making those who wanted to act against them grit their teeth.

However, the "Spiders" were very strict; apart from their unique teleportation business, they did not interfere with anything else, and being well-informed, they never sold their clients' information.

Therefore, this respectable organization had always been the most neutral entity on this continent and rarely clashed with other organizations.

However, the trap August and Mardo found themselves in was due to Caroline's own reasons.

"This is not good." August waited for his physical discomfort to subside, then looked around, whispering with some concern.

If they were deliberately teleported here, then someone must want to deal with them, and who holds a grudge against them right now?

The answer was already obvious: the mages of The Umbral Cabal.

"They're truly persistent!" August's face was grim as he listened intently to the movements around him.

Mardo did not seem to have been teleported with him, which was a huge risk for August.

The enemy was in the dark, and they were in the open, not even knowing what the enemy had prepared.

"Fortunately, I still have an alternative." August curved the corner of his mouth. "And it's hard to say who will live and who will die."

His great door had never closed since it opened that day, but it didn't seem to force him to enter, so August had been putting it off, and now it proved useful.

Then August opened the box and took something from it.

This was a revolver, a memento August brought from the world of Harry Potter. Coming into contact with supernatural powers more often, he forgot that this type of gunpowder weapon was also very lethal to an apprentice.

He decided to wait first, at least to see if Mardo was nearby. If he found him, that would be great. Instead of rushing through this environment, he preferred to return to a safe place first.

August checked the box again; nothing was missing, everything was there, and he couldn't help but breathe a sigh of relief.

Before leaving Stonehaven, Mardo specifically told him to bring the most important things when packing his luggage. August brought several ancestral books, insect eggs, and all his money. If anything was missing, he would be heartbroken.

"If the [Disillusionment Charm] worked, that would be great." August recalled the simple and easy-to-use spells from Newt's world; invisibility would undoubtedly significantly increase his safety factor in this situation.

He had only learned two minor spells during his recent studies, a [Ghost Charm] and a [Lightning Charm], neither of which was useful in the current situation.

"Be careful, this opponent isn't simple!"

At that moment, whispers could be heard in the distance. August was startled at first, but he immediately hid behind a large tree that seemed much sturdier than himself.

"The Red-Robed Lord personally went to pursue Mage Mardo, so why did he bring us here and abandon us? What little can we do against a Mage?" The speaker's voice was clear, like that of a young woman.

"Beatrice, this is our mission." A somewhat fawning male voice was heard. "Not only Mardo was teleported here, but also his apprentice."

"So we have to kill an apprentice? Why three people?" The female voice sounded a little confused. "Even if he's Mardo's student, two of us are enough to show him respect."

"Who knows? It's not for us to judge how those Mage Lords organize things; we just need to complete the mission." He paused and added, "Besides, if you manage to capture him alive, it's better not to kill him directly. The Red-Robed Lord still needs him."

The conversation between these two sounded as if they had August completely cornered.

"Three people...?" August thought this was bad. He was confident against one person, but two would be a bit difficult, and three would force him to flee.

"Volibear, why aren't you saying anything?" The girl sounded a little impatient, speaking to her silent companion beside her.

"..."

"How boring!"

August remained motionless behind the tree, his heart cold. It seemed this was not an accident, but a premeditated trap. He simply didn't understand how much they had paid for the usually respectable Spider to violate its principles.

It seemed Mardo couldn't be relied upon. From their conversation, a powerful mage was already targeting and pursuing him.

As he was a small, unknown fish, three apprentices were casually thrown out as bait for him.

"What do I do?" It seemed like a dead end. He was completely unfamiliar with the environment, and three greedy enemies were pursuing him.

"Should I just teleport?" August considered if he should first go to another world to avoid being in the spotlight.

"No, I can't just escape like that. If I always choose to escape when danger arises, what's the difference between me and a salted fish?" He thought he had never actively attacked before, always passively seeking opportunities.

"Only three apprentices. After devouring that unexpected guest, I've almost reached a critical state. Perhaps the stimulation of combat will allow me to break through?"

Of course, this was really impossible; August just wanted to find a reason to convince himself.

"Only three apprentices, their aggression isn't very high. If I'm careful, there shouldn't be any mortal danger!" He decided to confront them head-on, and if there was real danger, he would flee.

"Who's there?" The third person, who had been silent, suddenly looked up and stared coldly at August's hiding spot.

"Wait... wait a minute—" August shakily stood up from behind the tree, hands over his head, indicating his harmlessness.

"Huh?" The girl, with long, wavy emerald green hair, looked in surprise at August, who seemed to be surrendering.

"Are you August? August Vane?" In the center was a man almost the same height as August, but much older, appearing to be at least in his mid-thirties.

The one who exposed August's whereabouts was a bald, burly man, about 2.3 meters tall, with a bear-like build, and he was indeed wearing a bearskin and holding a large, long-handled axe.

This person, in August's eyes, looked more like a bloodthirsty executioner than a wizard apprentice.

"It seems the student found by the famous Mardo isn't much!" The girl, Beatrice, curled her lip in disdain, speaking to Kael, the man in the middle.

"Be careful, who knows if he's faking." That said, he was already ready to cast a magic shield at any moment to prevent August from launching a surprise attack.

"What's there to be afraid of? Three people can't handle one?" Beatrice was a little impatient. In her opinion, their team had the advantage, and August's feigned surrender undoubtedly gave her more confidence.

"We can't kill him, so how about we just break both his legs?" Beatrice, whose appearance was originally somewhat sweet, curved the corner of her mouth into a terrifying arc, a cruel smile adorning her face.

With that, she rapidly accumulated magical energy in her palm; it emanated from her, and in the blink of an eye, her forearm was enveloped in a red glow, forming a blood sword.
