Chapter 105: A Bouquet for the Future (Part 1)
Kanata once had a woman she admired like an older sister. This woman had taken care of her when she was younger, and they had become quite close. Now, this woman had a bounty on her head and was being targeted by the World Government – there was no way Kanata could stand idly by.
The group, having crossed the Calm Belt, headed for Ohara in the West Blue. However, the winds were unfavorable. Ohara was quite far, and it would take time to reach it.
Ohara was a sanctuary for archaeologists.
Kanata knew that archaeologists who sought the Road History Poneglyphs were never-ending, and perhaps as a warning to them, the World Government had been constantly searching for any connection to Ohara. They wouldn't miss this opportunity. Kanata had already received information that Marine Headquarters was mobilizing their warships.
Therefore...
"...It will take too long by ship. I'll go ahead and sink their warships," she declared.
"Wait, wait, wait!!"
"You're rushing ahead too fast! The Marines are planning to initiate a Buster Call, aren't they?! Even you wouldn't stand a chance against that!"
"Yeah! And Ohara's quite far! Even if their warships are fast, we still have a few days, right?!"
George and Scotch desperately tried to restrain Kanata.
They were well aware of her strength, but even she would struggle against five Vice Admirals, especially if they were powerful individuals. If Garp was among them, it would be a disaster.
They understood she was worried about Olivia, the woman she admired like an older sister, but her decision was too hasty.
"Besides, if it's a government-led attack, wouldn't you be removed from the Warlords if you interfere?"
"It doesn't matter. I never wanted that position in the first place."
"A year's worth of preparation down the drain… Well, if you're determined, there's nothing we can do."
They knew that once Kanata made up her mind, it was impossible to change it.
They sighed, muttering, "A full-scale war with the Marines, huh?"
"You can probably rescue one or two people discreetly. Just grab Olivia and come back."
"Olivia was the one I was closest to, but I wasn't on bad terms with the other scholars."
Things would escalate if she started adding more conditions. While compromise was necessary, she felt they should rescue everyone this time.
"They're scholars who can read the Road History Poneglyphs. We'll need them eventually… And there's no one else the World Government wants to eliminate more than those who can read them."
"You're overflowing with rebellious spirit."
"What grudge do you even have against the government…"
They would have preferred to reach Ohara first and set up a defense, but their forces were too small to fight the Marines head-on. They hadn't had time to summon reinforcements, and they had to leave some forces behind to defend Hachinosu. The current force heading for Ohara wasn't even enough to fill three warships.
It was a disadvantageous situation to directly confront a Buster Call.
They had sent out a summons, so their forces would increase eventually, but that depended on which Vice Admirals responded.
…The authority to initiate a Buster Call was limited to Marine Admirals or the Fleet Admiral, so it was possible that Sengoku or Kong was personally overseeing the situation.
"Well, I understand why you're in such a hurry," George said, then tossed something to Kanata.
"I figured something like this might happen."
Kanata caught it and examined it. It was a gaudy golden skull mask, similar to the one Octavia wore.
"It's better to be safe than sorry. You might not care about your Warlord status, but it's a useful card for us. Worst case scenario, just blame everything on Octavia."
"What do you think my mother is?"
However, it wasn't a bad idea.
Octavia wouldn't care about such accusations, and Kanata knew that Dragon was planning to rebel against the World Government. As someone seeking to gather information about the government, the Warlord position was useful. It wasn't essential, but there was no need to willingly abandon it.
And it meant Scotch and George's efforts to prepare for using Mary Geoise for trade wouldn't be wasted.
"But we still have some time, right? It'll take a few days to reach Ohara, so let's wait and see–"
"About that…"
Kuro emerged from inside the ship, holding a memo. He had been listening to their conversation and had received additional information about the situation.
"I figured they were already targeting Ohara. They're moving faster than we anticipated. The World Government ships are already approaching Ohara."
The Marines and the government ships were likely communicating regularly. Based on the intercepted transmissions, there was a high possibility they would arrive before Kanata and her crew.
They couldn't afford to wait and see.
"–I'm going ahead. Wait for me on an island near Ohara."
There were a few uninhabited islands nearby. They would be suitable for hiding.
Kanata decided that delaying the enemy and launching a surprise attack was a better strategy than engaging in a full-scale confrontation, and leaped from the ship.
After jumping from the ship, she ran across the sea for an entire night.
She had considered ambushing any warships she encountered along the way to buy some time, but unfortunately, they had already gathered in the northwest region of Ohara. She didn't sense Garp's presence, but her priority was to confirm Olivia's safety.
She quickly assessed the positions of the ships and, donning the gaudy mask, headed towards the "Tree of Omniscience" at the center of the island.
It seemed she had arrived just in time.
World Government officials were pointing guns at the scholars, and Clover was speaking to one of the officials. Olivia lay injured on the ground. Kanata wanted to intervene immediately, but… she needed to assess the situation first.
She couldn't hear what they were saying, but she figured that if she eliminated all the government officials, they wouldn't be able to trace it back to her… Just as she was pondering her next move, Clover was shot.
There was no time to hesitate.
"–Then, I'll use this Golden Transponder Snail to… Huh?"
Spandine, the CP9 chief who had been tasked with overseeing the operation, was about to initiate the Buster Call with the Golden Transponder Snail in his left hand – when he noticed something was wrong.
His left arm, from the elbow down, was gone.
"A-Ah… Aaaaaaaaaaaah!!? M-My arm!! My arrrrrrrrm!!"
"Chief!? What happened–!?"
The severed arm had a clean cut, as if sliced by a blade.
Two CP9 agents were standing beside him. They hadn't even noticed Spandine's arm being severed.
"I see, so this is the Golden Transponder Snail… This is how you initiate the Buster Call," a voice remarked.
Kanata tossed aside the severed arm she had sliced off with her hand, then curiously examined the Golden Transponder Snail.
A single press of the button on its back would unleash a barrage of cannon fire, obliterating Ohara. She was glad she had stopped it in time.
She crushed the Golden Transponder Snail underfoot, then stood before Spandine, shielding the scholars.
She didn't even glance at the surrounding officials – they wouldn't be conscious for much longer anyway.
"You… Who are you?!"
One of the CP9 agents standing beside Spandine shouted.
The other agent was quickly applying a tourniquet to Spandine's severed arm, occasionally glancing at Kanata.
"…That mask… Could it be–?!"
He recalled one of the highest bounties in the past few decades – and in the next moment, a wave of Conqueror's Haki washed over them, causing his consciousness to waver.
Even these seasoned CP9 agents, with their vast experience, were affected. Ordinary officials wouldn't stand a chance.
The officials surrounding the scholars collapsed one by one, and Spandine, foaming at the mouth, followed suit.
"…Should I just kill them?"
If they could withstand her Conqueror's Haki, they were undoubtedly strong. It would be safer to eliminate them before they interfered… As she took a step forward, the two CP9 agents reacted.
One grabbed Spandine and fled.
The other attacked Kanata, buying time for their escape.
CP9 was the only Cipher Pol unit authorized to kill, and even though they were weaker than CP0, they were still a formidable force.
"–Die!"
He aimed a finger pistol at Kanata's throat, intending to kill her – but Kanata's right foot shifted slightly.
Before he could even comprehend what had happened, he was blown away with incredible force, sent flying off the island.
There was no need to pursue them. Olivia was her priority.
Kanata turned towards the scholars and approached them.
Everyone was stunned by the sudden turn of events, but only Olivia seemed to understand what had transpired.
"…It's been a while. You even came dressed like this… I heard you became a Warlord, that you joined the government's side."
"It's just a mask. I never wanted that position… It was a small price to pay to save you."
She lifted the injured Olivia, then approached Clover, who had been shot.
"It's been a while, Dr. Clover."
"Could it be… Kanata? It's been… how many years… You've become quite beautiful. Did you come to return the books I lent you?"
"Fufu. Unfortunately, I can't return them yet. But I came to save your lives."
Clover had been shot, but it wasn't a fatal wound. He would recover with proper treatment. Kanata put on her mask and used her clothes to apply pressure to the wound, stopping the bleeding.
A young girl with black hair was standing nearby, nervously looking back and forth between Clover and Olivia. She seemed to have made up her mind and spoke to Olivia.
"Um… Mom, is that you?"
Kanata looked up at the girl's voice, comparing her to Olivia. "I see," she muttered.
While their hair color was different, their eyes were similar. Kanata had heard Olivia was married, so it wasn't surprising she had a child.
Olivia hesitated, then closed her mouth, seemingly unsure of what to say. Kanata sighed.
"Everyone here is your ally. You can say anything."
"…Yes, you're right – Come here, Robin."
Olivia beckoned the girl – Robin – and embraced her.
"Mom!!"
"You've grown so much, Robin…"
Olivia hugged her daughter, whom she hadn't seen since leaving Ohara six years ago. Tears streamed down her face.
Robin, finally reunited with her mother after so long, also began to cry.
The reunion was joyous, but they couldn't afford to linger.
"We need to prepare for the siege–"
"H-Hey, look! The Tree of Omniscience is on fire!!"
Perhaps due to the government officials using explosives while searching for the Road History Poneglyph research materials, the Tree of Omniscience had caught fire.
Countless valuable documents and books were stored there. It would be a shame for them to be lost.
The scholars immediately stood up and began trying to extinguish the flames. Kanata simply stood there, unsure of what to do.
"I… I need to help put out the fire," Olivia said, leaving Robin's side and staring at the burning tree.
Kanata had knocked out all the government officials, so they wouldn't interfere, but… extinguishing the raging inferno would be difficult.
And while she had stopped the Buster Call, the CP9 agents who had fled were still out there. The bombardment would begin soon.
They were running out of time.
"We're wasting time. Let's go."
"What–?"
Before Olivia could finish her question, Kanata turned her palm towards the burning tree. The flames instantly froze, extinguishing the fire.
Some of the books might be damaged, but it was better than losing them to the flames.
She ignored Olivia, who was staring at her in astonishment, and focused on a giant approaching from afar.
She recognized him.
"…Saul, the giant Vice Admiral."
It was the giant Vice Admiral she had fought against alongside Feiyun off the coast of Drum Island years ago.
She tensed, radiating hostility, but Olivia and Robin called out to him.
"Saul!?"
"Saul! What are you doing here?!"
"Olivia! Robin, you're safe… And who's that?"
"What are you doing here, Marine Vice Admiral? Did you come to observe the situation?"
"No… I quit the Marines. I couldn't stay in the military after losing my trust in them."
"It's alright. He helped me when I was captured," Olivia said.
"…I see."
Kanata lowered her hostility, accepting Olivia's words.
Saul, however, seemed more concerned with something else.
"Marine warships are approaching! We need to escape!"
"There's no time to evacuate everyone. We should either gather everyone and defend, or sink all the warships."
Saul was stunned by Kanata's outrageous suggestion. He stared at her as if she was insane, but she didn't retract her words.
If they wanted to protect the island, they had no choice but to fight.
"I destroyed the Golden Transponder Snail, but the bombardment will begin soon. However, the scholars seem more concerned with their books than their lives."
Even Kanata was at a loss for words.
They needed to survive to protect their knowledge, but… for these scholars, their books and documents were irreplaceable. Just like Olivia was for Kanata.
They had no choice but to defend the island.
"No. You're a Warlord now. You can't jeopardize your position for us…"
"I told you it's a meaningless position. I wouldn't be here if I cared about it."
"Even so… If possible… I want you to at least save my daughter."
Olivia and the others were fully aware they had broken the law. They knew they were being targeted by the government, and accepted the consequences.
But Robin was different. She couldn't bear the thought of dragging her innocent child into this.
"It's too cruel to let my daughter, who knows nothing about this, die with us."
"I'm not ignorant! I can read the Road History Poneglyphs! I even passed the archaeology exam!"
"What!? Robin, is that true!?"
Even Clover, who had taken care of her for so long, seemed surprised.
He knew she was intelligent enough to pass the archaeology exam at such a young age, but he hadn't expected this. Olivia was equally surprised and smiled, stroking Robin's head.
"Yes… You studied so hard. Not everyone can do that. You're amazing, Robin!"
Olivia praised Robin, who had been ostracized by her relatives and even struggled to be accepted by the scholars she had befriended. Tears streamed down Robin's face.
Olivia comforted her, gently stroking her back. As Robin calmed down – a cannonball flew from the sea, striking the Tree of Omniscience.
The tree, engulfed in flames, began to burn. Kanata, realizing they were running out of time, turned to Clover.
"I'll defend the island. Buy me some time, and reinforcements will–"
"No… It's fine."
"…What?"
"We fought against the World Government. They will pursue us relentlessly… I can't burden you with that."
"Don't be ridiculous! I've been preparing for this! I won't let you be taken, no matter who the enemy is!"
"Then! Then… please save Olivia and Robin."
Clover, bleeding from his gunshot wound, bowed deeply.
He had never considered the possibility of all of them surviving. They were more concerned with protecting their precious documents than their own lives. Even with Kanata's help, he wasn't sure how long they could fight against the combined forces of the World Government and Marine Headquarters.
Therefore, at least…
He pleaded with Kanata to save Robin and Olivia.
"No! I'm staying! I was the one who was captured, I dragged this island into this mess–"
"Silence, Olivia!! …Please, Kanata."
"…Are you sure?"
"Yes. History is meant to be passed down… I would rather entrust it to someone than let it be destroyed here!"
Kanata had been prepared to fight a full-scale war against the Marines. But she couldn't argue with Clover's resolve. Their current forces were too small to win, and his decision wasn't entirely wrong.
Olivia still had something to say, but Kanata, without a word, lifted her onto her back and carried Robin in her arms.
"Saul! What are you going to do?!"
"I'm leaving this island! But I'll help you escape!"
"I don't need your help… No, I do. Head for the eastern coast!"
The western coast had evacuation ships for the non-scholars who lived on Ohara. However, there were warships nearby, making it impossible to use that route.
She turned to Clover, offering a final farewell.
Cannon fire was already raining down on the island. They were running out of time.
"Farewell, Dr. Clover. I respect you… I promise I'll recover all the documents you've left behind."
"…Yes, thank you. Farewell."
"Kanata! Put me down! The doctor…!"
"Silence, both of you! Bite your tongues!"
Kanata dashed away with incredible speed, Saul following close behind.
They ran through the forest, heading for the eastern coast. Perhaps because he was so conspicuous, or perhaps because there were orders to shoot the traitorous Vice Admiral, cannon fire was targeting Saul.
Kanata deftly dodged the cannonballs, but Saul wasn't so agile. Several hit him directly.
"They're aiming for me! Go ahead!"
"But Saul!"
"It's alright! I won't be defeated so easily!"
Saul, seemingly determined to buy them time to escape, approached a ship near the coast.
"Prepare yourselves… You won't escape unscathed if you make an enemy of me!!"
He lifted a galleon, large enough to carry giants, and smashed it against the sea, destroying it in an instant.
Just as Kanata was about to head for the eastern coast – a slash attack came from the side.
She immediately tried to dodge, but realized Olivia wouldn't be able to avoid it in time. She intercepted the attack with her leg.
"Tch."
"Hmm."
The powerful attack, delivered with incredible force, would normally cleave through flesh and bone – but it couldn't cut through Kanata's leg. Their Haki clashed, scattering sparks and toppling trees.
She dodged the second attack and, distancing herself, moved from the forest to the sandy beach.
She recognized the figure who had emerged from the forest. It was a face she had seen many times. Kanata couldn't help but sigh.
"That mask… Could it be "Reverberation"? We have quite the formidable opponent."
It was Berg, the silver-haired Vice Admiral known for his exceptional strength.
