Chapter 92 - The Sound
“What’s going on, Hess? Are you okay?”
A few people hiding behind the boulders whispered mischievously, trying to egg him on.
But Hess didn’t move an inch, his eyes fixated on the targets in the field—or rather, on a particular target.
The others watched as he fired several shots without blinking. However, his opponent was incredibly sharp, as if equipped with a built-in rangefinder. Each time, they narrowly dodged his shots, always by just a fraction of an inch, which was infuriating.
The person next to Hess gave up after two or three tries, concluding that the girl in the field had a very high mental acuity. People like her had heightened nerves, senses, and perception, giving them talents far beyond ordinary people.
But this was Hess—he knew he wouldn’t give up so easily.
Who was Hess? In their grade, he was considered one of the top students. Yet, in this surprise attack, he was struggling to handle a group of freshmen who hadn’t even undergone formal training. It was almost embarrassing for Hess.
At the same time, he couldn’t help but feel a bit schadenfreude. It turned out there were indeed things even Hess couldn’t do.
There are many talented people in the world, and many who are naturally gifted. Some people are born to rise above others, while others, no matter how hard they train, must always put in far more effort just to barely reach the level of their peers.
The world has always been unfair, and he knew that. Compared to Hess, his own talent was much less. He knew he couldn’t measure up to Hes and had always looked up to him, just like the other classmates.
But there were moments when he felt envy and jealousy in his heart, wondering why. Why are some people born with things others can never have, while he himself could only reach this point?
Of course, such thoughts were just fleeting bursts of youthful arrogance—brief flashes of discontent. In the end, people have to return to reality, and he understood that there was no reason for it. Life is simply like that.
He hadn’t felt jealous of Hess in a long time; in fact, he had even grown to admire him. Hess had consistently remained at the top of their class.
But now, he realized that the world is actually fair in its own way—just because something hasn’t happened yet, doesn’t mean it won’t. Though this particular example might not be very convincing, since the attack was casual and no one was taking it too seriously, watching Hess struggle to hit that freshman brought him an unexpected sense of balance.
It wasn’t because he was witnessing Hess fail, but because he suddenly realized how foolish his past narrow-mindedness had been.
There will always be someone better, someone stronger. In life, everyone will face things they can’t achieve and people they can’t defeat, no matter who they are.
The real strength lies in not being content with the current situation, but in striving to break through such difficulties. That’s the mindset of a true strong person.
In that moment, the young man suddenly understood the gap between himself, Hess, and many other strong individuals. He also realized why things had been the way they were in the past.
Of course, admiration was there, but he couldn’t help feeling a bit of schadenfreude. Even Hess had things he couldn’t accomplish, and that junior girl, whether it was luck or skill, clearly had some genuine ability.
He watched as Hess aimed his gun, nearly forcing the girl into a corner. Just as he was about to say something, they heard a horn sound.
It was the signal to stop shooting.
The young man’s companion couldn’t help but be surprised—now he truly believed that the junior girl had some real skill and potential. After all, Hess was their class’s sharpshooter. While not the absolute best in the entire grade, he was definitely one of the top.
For Hess to focus so intently on one person and still not manage to take her down? That was truly impressive.
But… even though the instructor had signaled them to stop, Hess was still aiming his laser-marked gun, staring intently in one direction on the field.
Seriously? Is he that obsessed? It would be better for him to remember that girl and settle things later after the military training ends, instead of fixating on it now.
To be honest, this guy isn’t being very considerate. I wonder how the instructor will scold him later. The school recruited these second-year students to help train the freshmen and improve their skills, not to give them a stage to perform. They are actually not the main focus of this training.
The school’s intention is to allow every freshman to get some exercise and fully experience the spirit of marching, but they still need to ensure the physical and mental safety of the freshmen, so dangerous operations are not allowed.
Although they think the laser-marked guns provided by the school are unlikely to cause any danger, they can’t ignore the intense barrage from Hess. He wouldn’t actually want to knock down a completely inexperienced junior girl on the field, right? That would be too brutal.
Seeing that Hess still wouldn’t put down his gun and seemed intent on continuing, his companion hurriedly tried to pull him back to prevent him from doing something foolish in front of everyone.
The instructor has already called to stop; if you really take a shot now, won’t that just show everyone that you’re playing around? You’ll definitely get criticized and lose points later.
Seriously, he’s really going for it… what an idiot!
The young man was shocked by his foolish classmate’s behavior. He was actually trying to compete like a child! This junior didn’t even know what major she was in; if she was just an ordinary major student, that would be really embarrassing.
“Are you crazy?!” The young man yanked on Hess’s arm, forcing him to put down the laser gun he had aimed at the field. However, Hess had already gone too far, fixating on some movement in a certain direction.
—
Jiang Hui felt that someone must be targeting her from the shadows. Otherwise, how could the chaotic punching just now suddenly turn into a concentrated attack, seemingly aimed at all her weaknesses?
Jiang Hui hadn’t really undergone any training; in fact, her physical strength was much weaker than that of her combat-oriented classmates. But one thing she had strengthened significantly since arriving in the interstellar realm was her sharpness—sometimes her senses were even precise to the minutest detail.
Almost being targeted by this intense barrage, Jiang Hui was on the verge of giving in to her instinct to just lie down and play dead.
Suddenly, a long horn sounded in the arena, and the surroundings fell silent in an instant; the gunfire ceased as if it had received some signal.
Is it over?
Jiang Hui straightened up, panting as she looked around. She noticed that the remaining students standing in the arena had a similar reaction, their expressions a bit dazed as they stared at the chaos around them.
After a while, once she confirmed that there was indeed no more action, she unsteadily rose to her feet, her balance a bit off as she half-supported herself, feeling almost numb.
“Bang—”
