Chapter 191 - A Scale in the Heart
Let’s not discuss how the people outside are gossiping or evaluating them; the three-person team staying at the supply point is still floating in the water.
The items were picked up by Zhou Xiuwen, so naturally, it’s his responsibility to distribute them. Even if he doesn’t give anything to Jiang Hui and Huan Xian, no one can say anything. This rule was set when Jiang Hui first teamed up with Zhou Xiuwen in a temporary squad: whoever retrieves the resources is responsible for distributing them.
Although, in most cases before, it was Jiang Hui who retrieved the resources, and Zhou Xiuwen just helped out. But when the two worked together, it was often hard to say who should get what. It’s not like they could precisely divide a single bullet, or else Zhou Xiuwen would mostly just get one bullet as his reward.
Therefore, Jiang Hui often distributed the resources according to each person’s needs, without being so meticulous.
But this time, it was different. These bullet packs, with dozens of rows and hundreds of rounds, were all retrieved by Zhou Xiuwen alone. If one must say that Jiang Hui and Huan Xian contributed, it would probably be just lending a hand at the very end.
Jiang Hui didn’t plan to make decisions for Zhou Xiuwen; she would just see how he arranged things. Her only concern was on Huan Xian’s side.
Having cooperated for a while, Jiang Hui had come to understand Zhou Xiuwen. He was a kind-hearted person, friendly and straightforward, with almost no scheming. Jiang Hui got along naturally with him, and without realizing it, they became quite familiar with each other, like friends who had known each other for a long time.
She trusted his character and temperament.
However, when it came to Huan Xian, she didn’t understand him as well. She didn’t possess any mind-reading skills, and although their cooperation on the road had been good, she still had some trust in him. But this person was different from Zhou Xiuwen—he was much more calculating. There was no ill will, but naturally, she couldn’t interact with him the same way she did with Zhou Xiuwen.
Moreover, the other person didn’t know Zhou Xiuwen at all; the two had only connected through her as an intermediary. When it comes to the issue of dividing resources, no matter how good the relationship, problems can still arise. Let alone a relationship as shallow as this one?
If the conflict between the two arises over resource distribution, it would be troublesome.
If the resources were obtained by Jiang Hui, then no matter who deserves the credit, it would be simple—divide everything equally among the three. After all, they were teammates, and if someone ran out of something later, they could exchange or share it. This way, everyone’s mind would be at ease.
However, according to the rules, it should be Zhou Xiuwen who makes the division, otherwise it would be unfair to him.
Unfortunately, Jiang Hui didn’t have any telepathic abilities to subtly remind Zhou Xiuwen not to overdo it, since they would still be cooperating in the future. In the end, she could only quietly observe Huan Xian’s expression. Seeing that he didn’t seem to have any issue with it, she decided to let it be for now. After all, as a new teammate, Huan Xian gave off a fairly good, fair impression. He didn’t seem like someone with a narrow mind, so… he probably wouldn’t think too much about it, right?
Who would have thought that Zhou Xiuwen’s distribution would completely surprise her?
The most ideal scenario Jiang Hui had imagined was a simple one-third split, one portion for each person, to avoid making the new teammate feel left out.
But instead, he divided the items into three portions: half, or one-half, for Jiang Hui; one-third for Huan Xian; and the remaining roughly one-sixth for himself.
At this point, Jiang Hui was at a loss for what to do.
This didn’t feel right. If it had been the usual situation of gathering resources outside, it would have been normal for her to get half or even more. After all, Jiang Hui was the main force of the squad, while Zhou Xiuwen was the auxiliary.
But this time, Zhou Xiuwen had gathered everything by himself. It would have been normal for the distribution ratio to be reversed. He didn’t even need to leave half for her—he could have kept two-thirds, and no one would have been able to say anything.
In this three-way split, he still gave the largest share to Jiang Hui and took the smallest portion for himself. Then, he even told her that if she ever ran out of supplies in the future, she could come to him, saying that he didn’t need so many.
“Brother, you’re too honest!” This pure kindness left Jiang Hui at a loss for what to do.
What she didn’t realize was that Zhou Xiuwen also had his own reasoning. He wasn’t naive or completely clueless—he was just self-aware.
As for these bullets, if anyone in the team needed them most… it certainly wasn’t him. His shooting skills were average, and he had always been following Jiang Hui’s lead. If he took all these hundreds of rounds, he wouldn’t be able to make much use of them. What if he got unlucky and got “eliminated” with a shot? All the resources would be wasted in his hands. It was better to give them to someone who needed them more.
Among his teammates, Zhou Xiuwen naturally leaned toward Jiang Hui, who had always looked out for him, believed in him, and even patiently guided him. If the team were just the two of them, he would have given the entire box of resources to Jiang Hui without even a second thought.
After all, when they had previously worked together, the resources they gathered were shared between them. The key was that one was generous, and the other used them without hesitation.
However, now that there was a new member in the team, and someone he wasn’t very familiar with at that, he couldn’t distribute the resources the same way.
He understood the basic principle that everyone should get their share. Moreover, this new teammate seemed like a good person.
Unbeknownst to Jiang Hui, her two teammates had once communicated directly with each other without her involvement. And in a critical situation, they had even cooperated, though the experience had been quite unpleasant due to this person’s overwhelming abilities. But there was no denying that, given the situation, it had been effective.
As a result, the two of them, both inexperienced with water, had managed to help each other out during that brief connection, preventing them from being swept away by the current.
Out of fairness and logic, Zhou Xiuwen knew he should distribute the resources reasonably to the new teammate. So without hesitation, he gave one-third to him.
The last little bit was kept for himself.
To be honest, if it weren’t for the fact that he didn’t want this new teammate, who he wasn’t very familiar with, to think too much, Zhou Xiuwen wouldn’t have kept so much for himself. He was only capable of hitting maybe 20 out of the several dozen bullets, and those odds weren’t great. It would be better to give them to Jiang Hui to use.
It was fine, he thought, let the new guy hold onto it for now, and let it be a way of giving Jiang Hui some leeway. After all, you couldn’t put all your eggs in one basket.
Jiang Hui, unaware that her seemingly pure-hearted and straightforward teammate had so many underlying thoughts, was left somewhat puzzled. In a flash, Zhou Xiuwen had already come up with a solution and efficiently divided the resources without a hint of hesitation, all the while appearing calm and cheerful.
She wasn’t sure how to accept this overly generous gesture that seemed a bit too one-sided.
No reward without merit, right? The fact that he had already given one-third to Huan Xian showed he was considering the team’s balance and making a concession. Then he gave her half, which was essentially taking his fair share and giving it to her.
The one who had worked hardest to secure the resources ended up with the least. No matter how Jiang Hui thought about it, she couldn’t quite convince herself that this was fair.
