Chapter 178 - Sudden Turn
“I want to know what this ability is. It feels like so many people have it.” Jiang Hui felt puzzled as she received another transmission of mental energy.
Upon hearing this, the other person seemed surprised: “Jiang, have you encountered other commanders?”
Commanders? The ones from the Command Department? Could this ability be exclusive to commanders? Forgive Jiang Hui for her lack of knowledge; she didn’t have any relevant understanding in her previous life’s meager memories, so she was genuinely clueless about it.
Of course, this was the norm for most ordinary people in the star sector. They often held a one-sided perception of fields far removed from their lives, expressing gratitude and admiration for the military leaders who guarded their star domains, but lacking clear understanding of them.
They might know that there are mecha soldiers, combined warriors, mecha divisions, commanders, starship officers, and many more in the military, but they were not very clear on these professions and their functions. Even the original body, whose parents were in the military, didn’t understand much of this, leaving her uncertain if this was due to missing memories during her integration or if she simply didn’t know.
However, Zhou Xiuwen… was a commander, right? That guy seemed to have said he was from the logistics department. That profession seemed too far removed from command; it felt unrelated.
Not being able to figure out the connection, Jiang Hui’s questions were slightly alleviated but her doubts remained. However, this wasn’t the right time to discuss such matters, so she suppressed her thoughts.
The two briefly discussed the outcomes of their aimless wandering during this time. In fact, there wasn’t much to discuss. If they had gained anything, they wouldn’t have paused to discuss it in such an unsafe place where accidents could happen at any moment; it was simply because they were out of options.
This cursed place was like a maze—how were they supposed to find their way? Even if it was a maze, there should be an exit; it couldn’t be that they were meant to just wander endlessly within it. So, were they not following the right path or missing some crucial detail…?
After confronting several unfriendly passersby, the two had no choice but to take a break and search for clues. Otherwise, flying around like headless flies would likely trap them in this dead end forever.
Who comes here to play in a maze? They hadn’t forgotten that they entered to gather supplies and recharge. Now, with neither goal accomplished, how could they be satisfied?
But they had been searching for quite a while, feeling around and stepping firmly on every inch of ground, yet they still hadn’t found any breakthrough. What could they do? Should they look to the heavens for help…? Well, they hadn’t actually looked upward. Jiang Hui couldn’t help but glance at the pitch-black ceiling above.
“Someone!”
Suddenly, the person beside her yanked her hard and pulled her into the corner of the wall.
In the next moment, Jiang Hui heard faint footsteps coming from the northeast direction, a powerful presence brushing against the edges of her mental energy field. She didn’t have time to ask what was happening; she instinctively adjusted her position and hid with Huan Xian.
“What the hell is this supply point? There’s nothing here, and we can’t recharge. We’ve been wandering around for half the day, and it feels like we’re stuck in a maze. Are they playing games with us or what?” The irritated voice belonged to a clearly agitated person, filled with a distinct personality.
“Stop complaining. Time is running out, and the organizers won’t let us stay at the supply point for too long. If we don’t find the actual location of the supply resources soon, we might miss out on this supply altogether.” This person was clearly more calm, but his tone revealed his frustration with the current stalemate.
“Easier said than done! We’ve been searching, but look around—what part of this place haven’t we checked? We might as well have tried to break through the walls!”
“We haven’t tried that yet. There might be a chance—why not give it a shot?” The visibly agitated youth suddenly had an idea, speaking with renewed interest.
“Then why don’t you try it? Use those laser marking guns and game props. If you can really break through the wall, I guess you won’t even need to compete; the school could just hire you to design the competition instead,” the other person sneered, clearly dismissing the fanciful notion.
“Am I joking? Look, we can’t dig through the ground or flatten the walls. We can’t even run out of this passage, so where else can we find an exit? For supplies… I think we might as well let everyone just fight each other for the resources; that would be quicker. I say this might be the school’s way of providing supplies.”
“Alright, alright, stop shouting. Are you trying to attract everyone around you?” Another voice spoke up, carrying a tone of reassurance, causing the two to fall silent immediately. — This was a team of at least three people.
From their words, it seemed they were also looking for an exit and hadn’t found one either.
Jiang Hui and Huan Xian had a limited view of their surroundings, and the voices were faint and intermittent.
The two exchanged a glance, and Huan Xian made a “three” gesture to Jiang Hui, indicating they should avoid the area.
Even though they couldn’t see the individuals, the sound of their footsteps revealed they were stable and balanced, clearly possessing some combat skills, which put them above Jiang Hui and Huan Xian.
Moreover, while they spoke loudly, as if afraid others couldn’t hear them, the range of their mental energy was quite expansive. Their heightened awareness made it clear they were not to be trifled with.
With just the two of them and their limited skills, it was best not to take the risk and approach; resources could always be found elsewhere.
Both were quite self-aware and quickly made their decision. However, things did not go as planned.
Just as they cautiously concealed their presence along the wall, ready to escape, the group suddenly changed direction.
“Let’s go that way; it feels like we’ve passed through here before.”
Jiang Hui immediately sensed trouble, and it was already too late to change paths.
Even though she and Huan Xian instinctively withdrew their extended mental energy, both sides had awakened high-level mental abilities, making them acutely aware of their surroundings. It wasn’t something they could easily retract or extend at will.
The group immediately noticed something unusual at the corner ahead.
They had been discovered.
“Someone’s hiding over there.”
Great! If they didn’t run now, when would they? Were they just going to stick around and deliver resources to them?
Jiang Hui and Huan Xian seemed to be in perfect sync, ignoring everything else as they took off running.
“Over that way, quick! Chase them!” “I see them; there are only two of them.” “They can’t run far…”
Indeed, they really couldn’t run very far.
