The Strongest Brain in the Interstellar

Chapter 165 - The Infiltrator

Having escaped the chaotic battlefield and understood their current situation, the new students gradually began to disperse, fighting individually.

As time passed, they started to perceive the real interest of this competitive game.

Only a few on the field could truly be called sharpshooters. The vast majority, even with training, could at best be said to know how to handle a gun, but were still far from being able to aim accurately.

Once a bullet was fired, it couldn’t be returned. Whether they hit or missed would still create some noise, and startling the enemy was a common occurrence. How could opponents simply stand still like targets waiting to be eliminated? They would surely resist.

If the opponents were equally matched, the situation would likely devolve into a chaotic exchange of fire.

And if others were lurking nearby, waiting for an opportunity to catch their prey, how could these individuals pass up such a chance?

Thus, the new students who had been separated from the visible combat zone gradually moved into the uneven jungle. In reality, it was merely a different form of chaos. To avoid elimination, they needed not only accuracy but also the ability to survive.

One student, whom we’ll refer to as “Little Five,” thought this way.

He was among those who had “survived” the initial chaotic battlefield. He was from the mecha department; while his shooting skills weren’t high, his secondary awakening level of psychic ability was barely acceptable, and his senses were quite sharp.

Although he had gone through a period of clumsiness at the start, he managed to hold his ground, seizing the opportunity to escape during a clash between two battle zones, and successfully made it to this area.

Apart from encountering relentless attackers eager to score points off him, or those with terrible shooting skills looking for easy targets to team up with, he hadn’t come across any reliable teammates, so he had made his way here alone.

Now, he had been huddled in a rugged patch of woodland for quite a while.

This area mimicked the typical terrain and ecosystem of Planet 732, with towering trees reaching dozens of meters high and dense shrubs only a few meters tall. The ground varied in height, hidden beneath grass or bushes.

Navigating through this terrain required extreme caution; a misstep could land him in a pit, unable to climb out. It was also easy to become exposed—this level of exposure was akin to giving away one’s location, rendering him vulnerable without a means to counterattack or hide quickly.

Fortunately for Little Five, he soon found a fairly concealed position that was easy to defend. There were two large rocks to his left and right, and several dark bushes behind him, effectively hiding his form. The space was a bit cramped, though, and if he wasn’t careful while moving, he could make noise that might reveal his position.

One might wonder why he chose to stay here, as the potential for exposure while shooting was high, yet remaining idle seemed pointless.

The forest was eerily silent—trees were trees, stones were stones, and there wasn’t even a hint of a breeze; the air was thick with stillness. If he hadn’t seen others earlier, he might have doubted whether anyone was around at all.

Suddenly, the quiet of the jungle was broken by a different sound.

Someone was approaching!
Little Five’s heart skipped a beat as he focused intently on the direction of the noise. He instinctively tightened his grip on the gun, his thumb slowly rubbing the handle while his index finger hovered over the trigger. However, he didn’t act immediately.

Clearly, the newcomers had no idea that they were exposed to a predator. From the scattered sounds, Little Five could roughly determine that it was a small group, as the footsteps were chaotic.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t just one person.

He felt a bit disappointed by this outcome, but he didn’t relax his grip; instead, he focused on quieting his breathing, keeping his eyes fixed on the direction of the sounds.

Not yet… not yet… these guys sure can hold out!

Just as he was about to lose his patience, a gunshot suddenly erupted from the grass, aimed at the source of the noise.

Little Five’s heart raced—here they came!

That gunshot seemed to trigger something; responses came from multiple directions, as if everyone wanted to take advantage of the chaos.

Yet, for reasons he couldn’t quite understand, Little Five still held his fire. His index finger tightened on the trigger, then loosened, and tightened again several times.

In the center, where the commotion was focused, there was an eerie silence. Suddenly, the people there seemed to go wild, rustling around frantically, causing a disturbance even through the thick bushes.

The surrounding ambushers paused for a moment, then unleashed an even denser and fiercer barrage of gunfire, coming from all directions. The overlapping sounds made it impossible to tell where the shots originated, and the next moment, it could come from anywhere.

—But this wasn’t what Little Five wanted.

Then, without warning, the chaotic movement shifted to another area, just a few meters to Little Five’s left. Although it was a brief movement, it triggered a volley of gunfire aimed in that direction.

Amidst the sounds that were close in proximity, Little Five’s eyes brightened. He lowered his body further, and without realizing it, his gun had shifted to aim at a nearby spot on his right.

Just as the other side fired a second shot, Little Five shot back.

Since he was so close, he even heard the sound of a body hitting the ground with a thud. A surge of satisfaction welled up within him.

Finally, he had caught one! He had felt something was off earlier, sensing a presence nearby, but the other person was clearly skilled at hiding. No matter how he tried to detect them, he couldn’t pinpoint their exact location. This made him hesitate to act, causing him to miss several opportunities.

He had been holding back, waiting for the other person to slip up, and it had finally paid off by allowing him to catch this lurking snake.

As for the other ambushers, they were either too far away to take precise shots or their shooting skills were so poor that they couldn’t even handle a small team, only spraying bullets everywhere… He just needed to be careful and avoid them.

However, it was strange—how had so much time passed? It must have been at least three minutes… Why hadn’t any rescue ships arrived yet? Had they missed their shots? Little Five felt an odd unease creeping in.

Then, as if in response to his strange feeling, the previously quiet forest erupted with gunfire again.

But this time, the shots seemed different from the earlier chaotic barrage. Each shot appeared to have been calculated meticulously, landing steadily and precisely.

Little Five instinctively sensed that something was wrong and decided to retreat through the only escape route behind him. In the next moment, the hairs on the back of his neck stood up, and a chill ran down his spine.
