Chapter 115 - On-Site Situation
“Lieutenant Kane, please help contact the military hospital and have them do everything possible to treat Lieutenant Mace. If they lack any medications, I will contact the Eighth Corps for priority allocation,” Major Hank instructed.
A lieutenant officer beside him nodded and then dialed the hospital’s communication line.
At almost the same time, the young officer closest to Major Hank quietly said, “Major, I just received news that two key family members from the Mace family rushed over last night and have already arrived on this planet. They are expected to reach the military hospital soon.”
He was not an instructor stationed at the school but rather an aide to Major Hank.
In fact, his presence at this school seemed somewhat redundant; he neither taught students nor, like many other officers present, was deployed here for specific assignment tasks. He had come to the school as Major Hank’s aide, and his main job was to assist with military affairs during Hank’s time at the school.
According to the Empire’s military system, generally, only a colonel could have an aide. These aides act as the commander’s assistants, helping with administrative and military affairs. Even during wartime, they serve as the commander’s trusted aides, similar to a personal secretary role.
However, this is merely the surface-level system; the military structure that the Empire has maintained for so long has become somewhat ill-suited to the current state of the armed forces.
In this era of military prosperity, the Empire’s military forces have already reached a certain scale, almost two to three times that of the Empire’s early establishment. The entire organizational system is complex, with personnel ranging from privates to high-ranking generals, and the numbers have grown to a significant extent.
While this has ensured humanity’s dominant position in the starry skies, operating such a large and complex military machine requires not only vast resources but also an extraordinary amount of human resources.
Nevertheless, regardless of the era or how prosperous the military may be, the actual number of individuals qualified to serve as officers remains small. This means that they must lead an increasing number of subordinate soldiers and bear more military responsibilities.
A leader can possess strong leadership skills, excellent judgment, and a far-sighted vision… but no matter how capable a person may be, they are ultimately just one person, limited in their ability to multitask. At such times, a competent and strong aide becomes an excellent partner for them.
In the past, aides were assigned by the military. Typically, once an officer reached the rank of colonel, the army would select the subordinate officer who was most compatible with them to serve as their aide.
The future of this aide would then be closely tied to the success of the commander they followed. When the commander achieved military merits, the aide-de-camp would typically be entitled to a share of military rewards, which is an unspoken rule within the principal-aide relationship. Therefore, if they could follow a powerful commander, their path to promotion would generally be quite smooth, rivaling that of those who worked hard on their own.
As the responsibilities of the entire officer corps increased, even some middle-ranking officers like majors and lieutenant colonels began to require the assistance of aides.
However, revising the military system within the Empire is currently quite unrealistic. The military believes that it is better to self-arrange matters regarding this issue rather than negotiate with the aristocratic parliament, thus forming an unwritten rule.
As a result, some lieutenant colonels and majors can have their own aides through application. However, these aides are usually chosen from their trusted subordinates, rather than being selected through a public process within the military system as is the case for colonels. The treatment for these aides is similar to that of their higher-ranking counterparts, and they hold military ranks recognized by the army.
Major Hank comes from a prominent military family in the capital star. However, by his generation, his family has been relegated to a collateral branch. His grandfather was once one of the candidates for the main lineage inheritance, but after losing the election, he was separated from the main line and gradually marginalized.
Nonetheless, Major Hank has considerable talent and is an outstanding graduate of the capital’s military academy. Upon graduation, he immediately attained the rank of sergeant and earned numerous achievements during his ten years stationed on the border, ultimately being promoted to the rank of major. He is currently regarded as a promising figure within his family, and this aide was selected to be by his side through family channels.
Thus, this aide is also a collateral member of the Hank family, making him closely connected to Major Hank.
He understands very well that applying for military supplies is not something one can do casually. After all, the military is not a charitable organization, especially for those from different corps, as their resource sources vary significantly.
Lieutenant Mace is on the evaluation list for the Third Corps. Although he has not officially entered yet, it is expected that he will join the Third Corps as soon as he is promoted to the rank of lieutenant, barring any unforeseen circumstances.
Major Hank and his aide, as well as the Hank family, belong to the Eighth Corps. Therefore, if they were to request medical supplies for Lieutenant Mace, they would have to use Major Hank’s allocation.
However, the amount of medical supplies allocated to Major Hank by the corps is quite limited. He himself is reluctant to use it, let alone give it to an outsider, which naturally makes the aide unhappy.
So when he learned that Mace’s family members were already on their way, he couldn’t help but remind Major Hank, hoping that he would reconsider this overly generous decision.
“There’s no need for more words; just go ahead and say it,” Major Hank interrupted the aide, who was about to speak again, addressing the lieutenant who had paused upon hearing his words.
Major Hank said sternly to his visibly displeased aide, “I believe that a hero who dares to sacrifice his life to protect the citizens of the Empire should not lose his life at such a young age. He has done what he should do, and naturally, I must do what I should do.”
Seeing that his superior’s attitude was resolute, the aide ultimately took a step back and stopped persuading him. Although he appeared displeased, he helped the hospital connect with the Eighth Corps to request the special medical supplies.
Major Hank nodded and was about to say something to Stark when suddenly, the large screen in the center of the conference table connected. Once it was live, the entire room fell silent as they saw the images of the people and environment on the other side, which were somewhat chaotic.
“Lieutenant Lando,” Major Hank asked the person on the screen. The other party also saluted and greeted the major before directly reporting on the evidence-gathering situation to everyone present.
“… We have recovered a total of 1,872 pieces of star beast corpses from the scene. Upon confirmation, the species is identified as the I-type sulfuric acid ant, comprising a total of 53 individuals, which belong to a small, mobile group. The average mental strength is above level D, and the physical strength is C+. They do not possess toxicity, but the acid sulfur base they secrete has a significant interference effect on the brain domain of awakened individuals.”
“The king-level sulfuric acid ant that severely injured Lieutenant Mace is somewhat unusual. Its assessed mental strength is A+, and its physical strength is S. This is clearly mismatched with the pheromones of the group it leads, leading to a preliminary judgment that it appears to have been forcibly mixed. It was ultimately killed by Lieutenant Mace’s mech, and the crystal core will be transported back along with his mech later.”
