Chapter 113 - Lessons
But this reckless, self-righteous little brat just needs a lesson. Praising her can wait, or someone else can do it. As her elder, he must properly teach her a lesson; otherwise, she might think she’s in the right, feeling smug about it, and make the same mistake again next time. If that happens, she might not be so lucky.
“I think you should worry about yourself first. Do you know that excessive depletion of a latent awakener’s mental power could affect the upcoming awakening period? Knowing your own situation, how could you recklessly charge back into the woods to save someone? Driving without a license… You two really have guts and seem to have more lives than a cat, huh?” Stark sneered.
Jiang Hui didn’t expect the reckoning to come so quickly. In fact, it wasn’t just Stark; even now, when she reflected on the risky things she had done not long ago and the various oversights resulting from knowing better but still proceeding, she truly felt anxious about her own life.
Xierman was just a child; that could be understood. But what about her? Jiang Hui knew that the mistakes she made were no fewer than Xierman’s. She just had the advantage of being more mature at the core.
With Stark saying that, she didn’t dare to retort because what he said was the truth. If their positions were swapped and she was in Stark’s place, she would probably be furious to see her younger generation doing something like this.
“I was just waiting for the school’s rescue team, you know…” Jiang Hui couldn’t help but quietly defend herself.
“Make any choice with caution when the details are unclear. You should understand that at no time should you blindly trust what others say. Sometimes, even a small choice can be deadly,” Stark said solemnly to the still naive girl.
Although this time it was a series of fortunate events that led to a good outcome despite the initial missteps, who can guarantee that they will always be this lucky? If next time she encounters someone with ill intentions and ends up believing them, what then?
So while using this incident as an example may not seem particularly convincing, Stark still seized the opportunity to teach her a lesson, hoping that she would develop her own judgment in the future.
Jiang Hui resonated deeply with Stark’s words. After all, this incident was a ready-made example, wasn’t it?
That classmate Xierman probably had good intentions, but his kindness was based on his simplistic thinking. He didn’t have a clear self-awareness; he simply acted on his desire to do something.
Moreover, he even boldly involved another person to help him accomplish something that seemed quite impractical. That person was Jiang Hui.
The problem was that Jiang Hui, despite being an adult at her core, actually fell for it. It wasn’t that she lacked judgment entirely; rather, she was blinded by the situation and a momentary impulse.
Thus, being deceived cannot truly be blamed on others; it was entirely her own fault for not thinking things through.
Even though the two of them managed to save their team leader through a series of miraculous maneuvers, the incident left a profound mark on Jiang Hui’s heart.
Looking back now, what was most frightening was that she felt like an idiot, completely led by a young boy without any judgment. It was as if she had lost her intelligence, entirely driven by impulse, failing to utilize her normal adult reasoning.
So when the other person spoke, she had nothing to say and felt a bit ashamed.
Stark also understood that this child was still young, and she hadn’t even undergone formal training. Considering how she handled the situation, she had done quite well. The fact that she recognized her mistake proved she had a clear mind.
Well, he thought, he could just teach her properly in the future.
He said to the downcast Jiang Hui, “Alright, I understand the situation now. You should stay here and rest well. Tomorrow morning, Medical Officer Lu Jing will come to check on you, and then you can return to the dormitory to rest. You don’t need to attend training tomorrow; just wait for the school’s notification before resuming training.”
Jiang Hui nodded in a daze, watching him leave the tent swiftly. It then dawned on her that was it? They hadn’t really discussed anything significant; was he just here to check on her?
In fact, Jiang Hui’s intuition was correct; Stark had specifically come to assess her condition, and since she had just woken up, that was why they had this conversation.
Leaving the temporary tent area, Stark summoned a nearby soldier and instructed them to be cautious about the surrounding situation. He then departed from the makeshift resting area and headed toward the conference building in the center of the campus.
The night had grown late, or rather, it was approaching dawn, yet almost all the teachers and stationed military officers at the school were still awake. They had been busy all night, conducting investigations of the surrounding area and tracing the origins of the recent beast attack, as well as compiling reports for the military.
This incident had caused quite a commotion; two teams had been attacked by the beasts. One team had been fortunate enough to escape in time, but they ended up getting trapped in a valley. Fortunately, the ant beasts did not linger long and left for reasons unknown. They were eventually rescued by the school’s rescue team, who brought them back safely.
However, Lieutenant Mace’s squad was not so lucky. His team consisted mostly of ordinary students, and the majority had not been able to survive the shooting phase, so the final team he led to the endpoint was one of the smaller groups. As a result, they became the primary target for the swarm of the Ishi acid-sulfur ants.
The seventh squad nearly collided head-on with the group of beasts, and unlike the previous lucky team, they had almost no room to evade. As everyone witnessed, Mace took a stand and fought to protect these defenseless students, adopting a last-ditch defense strategy.
Unfortunately, Mace suffered a fatal blow from one of the hidden royal beasts, hitting a vital spot and nearly dying on the spot.
If it weren’t for the students from his squad taking the risk to search for help, and one of the new students fortuitously carrying a live cell biological agent, he probably would have died out there before the school could send a rescue team.
The situation was dire. He was still in critical condition, and according to the well-known interstellar medical principle of the twelve-hour golden period for rescue, if there was no significant progress in the next two hours, even if he survived, there would likely be lasting damage to his brain. This could ultimately affect his future military career.
All that can be hoped for now is that he can be a bit stronger, especially since he is still so young.
