The Strongest Brain in the Interstellar

Chapter 105 - Bad Fruit

No wonder.

Jiang Hui connected a series of doubts that had been troubling her and then felt another wave of confusion.

Why hasn’t the school noticed the anomalies and sent someone to deal with this matter?
This was something Jiang Hui couldn’t understand; the commotion was so large, and the instructor certainly had communication tools unlike them. How could the school have not reacted at all?

Jiang Hui wasn’t blindly trusting the school; she felt that this was simply too abnormal. Even on the relatively less developed Blue Star, such oversight was unlikely to happen.

Jiang Hui believed that while they were training here, the school’s monitoring of them would certainly not have been lax.

So where exactly had the problem occurred?

Could there have been some human intervention in this, or was someone intentionally causing the current situation?

Jiang Hui had her own thoughts.

After this student rambled on incoherently for quite a while, he finally heard Jiang Hui ask, “So what do you think we should do?”

She actually preferred to stay in place and continue observing. From Jiang Hui’s perspective, the entire situation was static, and all the events and information only came from external feedback. She didn’t have any real feelings about it yet, so further actions required careful judgment.

But from what the other person said… did he have other ideas? Or rather, was this what he was seeking her help for?

Jiang Hui silently looked at him, her expression questioning.

So she must have been crazy, knowing full well that it was foolish yet still following him.

What was she thinking? If, as he said, there was a group of star beasts nearby, what made her think she could withstand even one of their attacks or even escape with her life…

Was it her not-so-bright mind or her arms, thinner than twigs? If she encountered a star beast, she would probably just have to lie down and wait for death.

Yet she couldn’t understand why she acted on such impulse—whether it was a restless factor in her genes or some instinctive drive, she had followed him almost as if possessed.

Even though he kept assuring her that he had a very fast temporary transportation tool, and that even if they encountered a star beast, they could just squeeze in and escape in a flash, he kept showing it off to her, indicating the spatial link hanging around his neck.

So Jiang Hui ended up here with him.

“Are you sure it’s this direction?” Jiang Hui confirmed with him once again.

The boy named Xierman nodded. “I had the courage to go back and take a look, and I saw the traces of the mecha’s battle all the way, and it’s already silent.”

Jiang Hui silently glanced at him. This guy was a true warrior; in uncertain circumstances, he still dared to charge back alone. It was a miracle he hadn’t been snatched away by a star beast for acting so recklessly. No wonder he looked so starved earlier; his movements were unusually quick.

But what difference was there between her and him right now? If they died here, it would probably be from sheer foolishness, and no one would call her a warrior behind them.

However, he provided a valid clue, so Jiang Hui had no choice but to continue walking with him.

“Don’t you dare lie to me. Otherwise, I guarantee that before the star beasts get me, I’ll make sure to strangle you first,” Jiang Hui said in a flat tone.

The person in front suddenly stiffened for a moment but quickly relaxed and continued walking calmly.

Jiang Hui certainly knew this trip was risky, and since she was here, she wasn’t afraid of risks. So she called it a foolish act. But just because she was willing to act foolishly didn’t mean she was willing to be deceived; after all, she didn’t trust this person she had just met.

The two walked for a while longer, fortunately not encountering any star beasts or dangers along the way.

However, they gradually realized that they were probably on the right path. Following Xierman’s guidance, the sour odor grew stronger, and there was a subtle shift from a purely sour smell to a fishy stench.

Jiang Hui now understood that this indescribable sour gas was secreted by the star beasts that had attacked their instructor.

But according to Xierman, what they had smelled before was a much more irritating scent. Although this one still had a sour smell, it felt fishier, almost reminiscent of blood.

The two silently covered their mouths and noses with cloths and trudged forward.

Yet, the closer they got to their destination, the more cautious they became, and the slower they walked. Both of them were students in combat training, with a certain level of psychic ability. Although they hadn’t officially enrolled yet, they could still use their psychic powers to some extent. For example, Jiang Hui could now project two strands of psychic energy to sense her surroundings.

She wasn’t sure how Xierman was doing, but it seemed like he was also using his psychic powers to stay alert.

For a moment, the two fell silent.

“Go this way—” Jiang Hui suddenly stopped and said to the person in front.

Xierman seemed a bit confused but quickly accepted the girl’s suggestion. The two turned at a small angle and went in another direction.

Sure enough, the fishy stench grew stronger, and they even began to smell a thick odor of blood—clearly not from a human.

However, the closer they got to the other side, the more silent it remained, without even a hint of psychic fluctuations. No, it wouldn’t be accurate to say there was nothing at all; it was actually a slight disturbance that had drawn Jiang Hui here. Her subconscious told her to come this way, quickly!

Perhaps due to lingering doubts, the two walked slower and slower until—

Suddenly, Jiang Hui stepped on something hard yet soft. Before she realized it, she had stepped down completely, and it felt as if she had burst a bag of flesh, accompanied by a “sizzling” sound as juice flowed out.

Jiang Hui didn’t know what she had just imagined, but all the hairs on her body stood on end. One foot didn’t know whether to press down or lift up; she felt completely out of sorts.

She stiffly tried to look down at what it was, only to hear someone shout, “Wait.”

“I’ll help you take a look.” The other person stepped forward and kicked the thing under her foot away.

“It’s nothing, just a rotten fruit,” Xierman said casually to Jiang Hui, reminding her to watch her step since there might be many such rotten fruits around.

Jiang Hui felt a bit better after that. “Is that so? Thanks.”

Suddenly, a flash of lightning illuminated the surroundings, revealing a circle of scenery that their flashlight hadn’t reached.

There were indeed many “rotten fruits,” round and “bright-eyed,” with no damaged spots that still exuded the unique inorganic quality of insect eyes.

Realizing what she had just stepped on, Jiang Hui felt all the hairs on her body stand on end in an instant, and her back was covered in a cold sweat.

Xierman: …

He had actually seen that it was a damaged eye-like organ from a star beast. He had wanted to hide the truth by calling it a rotten fruit, but it turned out to be immediately revealed.

So having too much imagination isn’t necessarily a good thing.
