Chapter 11: Returning to the Farm+Reporting Back to the Guild
Max and the twins made their way back to the farm, the scent of scorched grass still lingering in the air from their recent battle. As they approached, they saw the old man, Elderon, still seated in his rocking chair on the porch, his sharp eyes watching them with quiet amusement.
Elderon smiled as they came into view. "Well, how did it go?" he asked, leaning forward slightly. "I thought I heard explosions back there."
Max chuckled, running a hand through his hair. "Yeah, about that. Let's just say those Horned Rabbits didn't go down without a fight. Turns out there was an Alpha Horned Rabbit leading the pack. Tough battle, but we got the job done."
The old man raised an eyebrow, impressed. "An Alpha, you say? No wonder they've been causing so much trouble. Must've been one hell of a fight."
Lira smirked, crossing her arms. "You could say that. Max here turned the clearing into a battlefield. Tornados, lightning, fire… it was a whole show."
"Don't forget the part where you almost got flattened," Seria added with a teasing smile, nudging Max lightly.
Max laughed, shrugging. "Hey, it worked, didn't it? Anyway, the field's clear now, so you shouldn't have any more problems."
Elderon nodded, his expression softening. "I can't thank you enough. Those pests were ruining my crops and scaring the livestock. You've saved me a lot of trouble."
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small wooden token, handing it to Max. "Here's your proof of completion. Take this back to the guild, and they'll know the job's done."
Max took the token with a grateful smile. "Thank you. It was our pleasure to help."
Elderon chuckled. "Pleasure, huh? You adventurers have a strange idea of fun. Still, you've earned it. Best of luck to you all."
Seria stepped forward, her tone warm. "Take care, Elderon. Let us know if you need any more help in the future."
"Yeah," Lira added, grinning. "Next time, maybe just give us a heads-up if there's another Alpha hiding out there."
The old man laughed, waving them off. "Will do. Safe travels, you three."
With the token secured, Max and the twins began their journey back to the city. As they walked along the dirt road, the tension from the battle seemed to melt away, replaced by a sense of accomplishment.
"Well, that was one way to start your adventuring career," Seria said, glancing at Max.
"No kidding," Lira added. "You're setting the bar pretty high for yourself. Tornados and fireballs on a pest control mission? What's next, taming a dragon?"
Max laughed, shaking his head. "Let's not get ahead of ourselves. But honestly, thanks for having my back out there. Couldn't have done it without you two."
Seria smiled. "That's what a team is for. You did great, Max. The guild's going to be impressed."
The three of them continued their lighthearted conversation as they approached the city gates, the token in Max's pocket a tangible reminder of their success. Ahead of them lay the guild and the next step in Max's journey as an adventurer.
Max and the twins stepped through the doors of the Adventurer's Guild, the familiar hum of conversation and clinking tankards filling the air. The hall was bustling with adventurers swapping stories, checking the quest board, and sharing meals. Max couldn't help but smile as he took it all in.
"Feels good to be back," he said, glancing at Seria and Lira.
"Just don't start staring again like it's your first time," Lira teased, nudging him lightly. "You're an adventurer now. Act like one."
Max chuckled. "Fair enough."
The trio made their way to the receptionist desk, where Mira stood, her dog-like ears twitching as she sorted through a stack of papers. She looked up as they approached, her face lighting up with a warm smile.
"Well, if it isn't Max, Seria, and Lira," Mira said, her tail wagging slightly. "Back already? How'd the initiation test go?"
Max set the wooden token Elderon had given him on the counter. "Mission accomplished. The field's clear, and the farmer can rest easy."
Mira's eyes widened slightly. "That's great to hear. But… I'm guessing there's more to the story, judging by the way you're all grinning."
Seria leaned on the counter, smirking. "Let's just say Max here knows how to make an impression. Tornados, lightning, fireballs… the works."
Lira laughed. "Oh, and don't forget the part where he almost got flattened by an Alpha Horned Rabbit."
Mira's ears perked up. "An Alpha Horned Rabbit? Seriously? Those aren't exactly common. How'd you manage that, Max?"
Max scratched the back of his head, grinning sheepishly. "It wasn't easy. Tails and Tusk pulled their weight, and, well, I might have gone a little overboard with the magic."
Mira laughed, her blue eyes sparkling. "Overboard, huh? Sounds like you've got a flair for the dramatic."
"He definitely does," Lira said, smirking. "But hey, it worked. The Alpha didn't stand a chance."
Seria nodded, her tone more serious. "Max did great out there. He handled himself well, especially for his first quest. He's going to be a real asset to the guild."
Mira smiled warmly at Max. "That's high praise coming from these two. Welcome to the guild, Max. You've definitely earned your place here."
Max felt his cheeks flush slightly under their praise. "Thanks, Mira. I couldn't have done it without Seria and Lira, though. They had my back the whole time."
"Aw, look at him being all humble," Lira teased, leaning closer with a playful grin. "Careful, Max, or you might make us blush."
Max laughed, shaking his head. "I'll try to keep it in check."
Mira chuckled, resting her chin in her hand. "You three make a good team. I'm looking forward to seeing what kind of chaos you're going to stir up next."
"Hopefully not too much," Seria said, though there was a glint of amusement in her eyes. "But knowing Max, I'm sure we'll keep things interesting."
The four of them shared a laugh, the atmosphere light and filled with camaraderie. Mira's tail wagged as she handed Max a stamped receipt for the completed quest.
"Alright, you're officially registered as a Bronze Rank adventurer," Mira said. "Congratulations, Max. First quest down, and plenty more to come."
Max took the receipt with a grin. "Thanks, Mira. I'll do my best to live up to the guild's expectations."
Lira smirked. "And to keep us entertained along the way."
Seria rolled her eyes good-naturedly. "Come on, let's grab a table and figure out what's next."
As they moved toward an open table, Mira called out after them. "Don't forget to check the board for new quests! Something tells me you'll have your hands full in no time."
Max waved over his shoulder, his spirits high. With his initiation quest complete and his companions by his side, he was ready for whatever adventures lay ahead.
Max and the twins found an empty table in the bustling guild hall and sat down, the lively chatter of adventurers filling the air around them. Max leaned back in his chair, a satisfied grin on his face as he held the stamped receipt Mira had given him.
"So," Seria began, crossing her arms with a smirk. "How does it feel to finally be an adventurer, Max?"
Max chuckled, glancing at the guild emblem now engraved on his adventurer's card. "It feels… pretty great, actually. I've been looking forward to this ever since I got here. Now it feels like I'm officially part of something bigger."
Lira grinned, resting her chin on her hand. "Welcome to the chaos, then. You're officially one of us now. No turning back."
"Not that I'd want to," Max said with a laugh. He glanced between the two sisters. "Thanks for everything, by the way. I couldn't have done this without you two."
Seria's expression softened, her green eyes warm. "You've got natural talent, Max. All we did was nudge you in the right direction."
"Speak for yourself," Lira teased. "I feel like I've been babysitting him half the time."
Max raised an eyebrow, smirking. "Babysitting? Pretty sure I handled that Alpha Horned Rabbit just fine."
Lira chuckled, leaning back in her chair. "Alright, I'll give you that one. You did put on quite the show."
Seria laughed softly. "And now you're officially part of our team. Welcome aboard, Max. It'll be nice to have another pair of hands—and another brain—to help us out."
Max tilted his head, his grin turning thoughtful. "Speaking of the team… do you two really want me to stick around? I mean, we only just teamed up today. Are you sure I'm the right fit?"
Seria's smile grew softer. "Of course, we're sure. You've already proven yourself. And honestly, I think you're exactly what we need. You bring something different to the table—your connection with beasts, your perspective… It's refreshing."
Lira nodded, her usual smirk replaced by something more genuine. "Yeah, we've been adventuring together for a while, but having you around… it feels like the team's complete now. Plus, you make things interesting."
Max blinked, surprised by their sincerity. "Wow. I… wasn't expecting that. Thanks, you two. That means a lot."
"The real question is," Seria said, leaning forward slightly, "is whether you want to stay with us. You're an adventurer now. You could form your own party, go solo… You don't have to stick with us if you don't want to."
Max met her gaze, his golden eyes steady. "Are you kidding? Of course I want to stay. You two have been nothing but amazing. I'd be an idiot to walk away from that."
Lira smirked, leaning back in her chair. "Good answer. Guess we're stuck with you now."
"Guess so," Max said with a laugh. "But seriously, thanks for letting me be a part of this. I'll do my best not to let you down."
Seria nodded, her expression warm. "We know you won't. Welcome to the team, Max."
The conversation shifted slightly as Max leaned forward. "By the way, where are you two staying? Do you have a place here in the city?"
Seria nodded. "Yeah, we've got a small apartment near the east gate. It's nothing fancy, but it's cozy."
Lira added, "And cheap, which is the best part. What about you? You staying at the inn?"
Max laughed lightly. "Yeah, I'm at the Traveler's Rest for now. It's a nice place, but I'm thinking about finding something more permanent. If I'm going to be around for a while, it'd be nice to have my own space."
"Makes sense," Seria said. "Having a stable place to come back to after quests is important."
"You could always crash with us," Lira said with a teasing grin. "There's a couch. It's lumpy, though."
Max paused for a moment, then smiled. "You know what? That actually sounds like a good idea. Just for a little while, until I find my own place."
Lira blinked, then laughed. "Really? Well, alright, but don't blame me if the couch gives you a stiff back."
Seria smiled warmly. "It'll be nice to have you around. Consider it a team bonding experience."
Max grinned. "Thanks, you two. I appreciate it. Guess I'm officially moving in for a bit."
The twins laughed, and Seria shook her head with a smile. "Suit yourself. But the offer's there if you ever need it."
Their conversation continued, drifting into lighter topics. Max shared some of his thoughts about future quests, while the twins teased him about his dramatic fighting style.
"You've got a knack for making things flashy," Lira said, smirking. "I mean, who throws nine fireballs into a tornado?"
"Hey, it worked, didn't it?" Max shot back, grinning.
Seria chuckled. "Just don't blow up the whole guild hall next time. We'd like to keep our reputation intact."
Max laughed, leaning back in his chair. "No promises. But I'll try to keep it under control."
The easy banter and laughter filled the air as they enjoyed each other's company. Max felt a deep sense of gratitude for having Seria and Lira by his side. They weren't just teammates—they were becoming friends he could trust and rely on.
To be continued…
