the starborn legacy

Chapter 10: Chapter 10 : The Starborn Reawaken

Liora sat at the edge of the dimly lit command room, her gaze fixed on the holographic galaxy map that flickered before her. Dr. Myral Dax stood at the center, gesturing to various points on the map as she outlined the Empire's movements. Her sharp, analytical tone left little room for doubt—this was a woman who understood the stakes.

"The beacon's activation has already drawn attention," Dr. Dax said, her silver hair catching the light. "Not just from the Starborn, but from the Empire as well. If we don't act quickly, they'll find this outpost and obliterate it."

Liora shifted uncomfortably. The Sigil on her hand had gone dormant again, but its presence was a constant reminder of her newfound responsibility. "How do we find the other Starborn before the Empire does?" she asked.

Dax tapped a sequence into the console, and the map zoomed in on a cluster of distant star systems. "The Starborn temples," she said. "Ancient sanctuaries hidden across the galaxy. They're the only places capable of amplifying the beacon's signal."

Tharn, leaning against the wall with his arms crossed, raised an eyebrow. "And how do you know this?"

Dax shot him a withering look. "Because I've spent my entire career studying Starborn technology. This outpost was built around one of their archives—a treasure trove of knowledge the Empire has spent decades trying to destroy."

Liora's eyes widened. "There's a Starborn archive here?"

Dax nodded. "It's how I recognized your Sigil. The data we've recovered suggests that the temples were designed as rallying points for the Starborn. If we can access one, we might be able to call the remnants to us."

Kade, who had been uncharacteristically quiet, finally spoke up. "And let me guess—getting to these temples isn't going to be easy."

Dax gave a thin smile. "Nothing worth doing ever is."

Later, Liora followed Dax through a series of winding corridors deep beneath the outpost. The air grew colder, and the walls became smoother, as if carved by hands far more skilled than any modern machinery.

"This is it," Dax said, stopping in front of a massive door covered in glowing symbols.

Liora stepped closer, her heart pounding. The symbols seemed to pulse in response to her presence, their light growing brighter as she approached.

"What do I do?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

"Touch the door," Dax instructed. "The Sigil should do the rest."

Liora hesitated, then pressed her hand against the cool surface. The Sigil on her palm flared, and the door shuddered. With a deep, resonant groan, it began to slide open, revealing a chamber bathed in soft, golden light.

The room was filled with towering columns, each etched with intricate carvings that seemed to depict scenes from Starborn history. At the center of the chamber stood a pedestal, atop which rested a crystal orb that glowed with an inner fire.

"This is the archive's heart," Dax said, her voice filled with awe. "The orb contains the collective knowledge of the Starborn. If anyone knows where the temples are, it's this."

Liora approached the pedestal, her breath catching as the orb's light seemed to reach out to her. When her fingers brushed its surface, a flood of images filled her mind—star maps, ancient battles, and faces she didn't recognize but somehow felt connected to.

"The temples," she murmured, focusing on a series of coordinates that burned brightly in her vision.

"Can you see them?" Dax asked eagerly.

Liora nodded, pulling her hand away. "There are three within reach. One on the desert world of Xyros, another on the water planet Veylna, and the last in the ruins of Aelora."

Tharn, who had joined them in the chamber, frowned. "And which one do we head for first?"

Before Liora could answer, the outpost's alarms blared, their shrill tones cutting through the silence.

"Incoming ships!" a voice crackled over the comms. "Imperial forces are closing in!"

Dax's face hardened. "They've found us."

The outpost erupted into chaos as its inhabitants scrambled to prepare for an attack. Liora and the others hurried to the command center, where a tactical display showed a fleet of Imperial cruisers closing in on their position.

"We don't have the firepower to hold them off," Tharn said grimly.

"We don't need to," Dax replied. "If we can escape with the coordinates, the outpost's sacrifice won't be in vain."

Liora felt a pang of guilt. These people were risking everything because of her. "What can I do to help?" she asked.

Dax turned to her, her expression serious. "You're the only one who can activate the temples. If we lose you, it's over. Get to the ship and go."

Liora opened her mouth to protest, but Tharn grabbed her arm. "She's right. Come on."

Kade was already at the docking bay, preparing the freighter for launch. The sound of blaster fire echoed through the corridors as Imperial troops breached the outer defenses.

"Let's go!" Kade shouted, ushering them aboard.

As the freighter lifted off, Liora looked back at the outpost, her heart heavy. The people she had just met were fighting—and dying—to protect her. She clenched her fists, a new determination rising within her.

"I won't let them down," she vowed. "We'll find the temples. We'll stop the Empire."

Tharn placed a hand on her shoulder, his voice low but steady. "Then we'd better make it count."

The freighter shot into hyperspace, leaving the embattled outpost behind. Ahead of them lay the unknown—a galaxy full of danger, but also the faintest glimmer of hope.
