The Spectacular Rank F Hero

Chapter 9: Chapter Nine: Shadows of the Past

Rin strolled down the Academy's bustling hallways, feeling like he was finally getting the hang of this strange new life. It had been a few weeks since his arrival, and while the classes were grueling and the instructors relentless, he found himself adjusting to the daily grind. The "Rank F Hero" label seemed to invite trouble wherever he went, but trouble was something Rin had learned to handle.

"Hey, Rank F! Catch!"

Rin barely looked up as a low-ranking energy blast flew toward him. He sidestepped it effortlessly, letting the blast fizzle out against the wall behind him. The trainee who'd thrown it—one of the self-proclaimed "top dogs" of his class—gawked at him, clearly not expecting such a casual evasion.

"Nice try," Rin muttered, pushing past the stunned student.

Most trainees in the Academy viewed him with a mixture of amusement and pity. To them, he was an anomaly—an F-ranked nobody who somehow kept slipping past the challenges. But Rin didn't mind the skepticism. It kept the spotlight away, just as he liked it.

As he turned a corner, he nearly bumped into a familiar face: Aila, his mentor and probably the only person here who didn't look at him like he was just a fluke. Her eyes, as always, were sharp and calculating, scanning him from head to toe.

"Rin," she said, arms crossed. "I heard about the stunt you pulled in combat class yesterday."

Rin shrugged. "Stunt? If dodging poorly aimed punches counts as a stunt, then sure."

Aila's lips twitched in a faint smile. "You're better than you let on, aren't you?"

"Hey, I'm just a Rank F," Rin replied, feigning innocence. "Can't expect much from someone like me."

Aila's gaze turned serious, her voice dropping. "Don't play games, Rin. You've survived things most C-ranks struggle with. I've seen flashes of something… unique."

Rin shifted uncomfortably under her scrutiny. He didn't like being analyzed, especially by someone as perceptive as Aila. She seemed to see right through his careless attitude, like she knew there was something he wasn't telling.

"Fine," he said, breaking the silence. "What do you want me to do?"

Aila handed him a small, plain envelope. "There's a task for you. Consider it… a test. One that will help me understand what you're really capable of."

Rin took the envelope, glancing at her suspiciously. "And if I don't want to?"

"Then don't," Aila said, unbothered. "But you won't get far in this Academy if you keep running from challenges. Not every obstacle is going to be something you can laugh off, Rin."

She turned and walked away, leaving him staring down at the envelope in his hand. Sighing, he tore it open, revealing a single slip of paper with an address scrawled on it, along with a short note: "Meet at midnight. Come alone."

Midnight Meeting

Later that night, Rin found himself standing outside an abandoned warehouse on the outskirts of the Academy grounds. The place looked eerie, its windows shattered, walls covered in graffiti. He squinted, looking around for any signs of life. Whoever had written the note had a strange sense of drama.

As he approached, he heard a soft hum—a field activated by mana, designed to conceal activity within. Whoever set this up knew what they were doing.

"Okay, Rin," he muttered to himself. "In and out. Let's get this over with."

He slipped inside, careful to avoid making noise. The interior was dimly lit by a single flickering light, casting long shadows that seemed to shift and stretch as he moved. Then, he heard a voice—low and raspy, coming from the darkness.

"Welcome, Rin."

He spun around, trying to pinpoint the source. A figure stepped forward, cloaked in black, with a hood covering most of their face. Only their eyes were visible, gleaming with an unnatural light.

"Who are you?" Rin asked, keeping his tone neutral.

The figure chuckled. "Just someone who's been… watching. You've stirred up quite a bit of interest at the Academy."

Rin crossed his arms, unimpressed. "Look, if this is some recruitment pitch, you're wasting your time."

"Oh, it's far from that," the figure replied. "This is an invitation. You've shown… potential. A raw talent that, with the right guidance, could be something extraordinary."

Rin's patience was wearing thin. "Why don't you just tell me what you want?"

The figure tilted their head, studying him. "There are forces in this world that operate beyond the Academy, Rin. People who know what true power is, who understand the delicate balance that keeps everything in order. And they're looking for… recruits."

Rin suppressed a laugh. "So, I'm supposed to join some shadowy organization just because I can dodge a few punches? No thanks."

The figure's voice turned icy. "Think carefully before you dismiss us. Your little tricks may have gotten you this far, but they won't be enough forever. We offer something the Academy never could—true freedom, unbound by ranks or rules."

Rin's expression hardened. "Thanks, but I'll pass. I don't need some mysterious group telling me what I'm worth."

The figure's eyes flashed, a hint of anger breaking through their calm demeanor. "Fine. But remember this, Rin. You can hide behind your rank all you want, but the day will come when your true nature is revealed. And when it does… we'll be waiting."

With a wave of their hand, the figure vanished, dissolving into the shadows as if they'd never been there at all.

Rin stood alone in the warehouse, feeling a shiver run down his spine. He wasn't sure what he'd just stumbled into, but one thing was clear—this Academy life was about to get a lot more complicated.
