Chapter 42: Chapter 42: Shimura Takeshi vs. Sarutobi Asuma
"Now this is interesting. The son of the Hokage's aide going up against the Hokage's own son? That's a pretty even matchup."
Even Morino Ibiki couldn't suppress his curiosity after hearing the names of the duelists. He stood up from his seat.
Despite the classroom descending into chaos, their teacher, Genjin, didn't stop them. Instead, he joined in and moved to the window.
This was a rare and exciting showdown—how could he possibly miss it?
That was exactly what Genjin was thinking.
And he wasn't the only one. Even upperclassmen classrooms experienced small-scale commotions as everyone's attention focused on the schoolyard.
"Just so you know, Takeshi, I won't be holding back."
Asuma patted the ninja tool pouch strapped to his leg, revealing the kunai inside.
"Oh? Well, then I guess I'll have to hold back."
Takeshi wasn't about to back down. He didn't have a kunai on him, but he did have a few shuriken.
Not that he needed a kunai anyway.
"Then, you two, form the Seal of Confrontation!"
Ito Makoto tensed up, eyes fixed on the two boys, afraid he might miss even the slightest movement.
"Bring it on, Takeshi!"
"Hmph, here I come!"
As soon as they formed the seal, Asuma darted forward, instantly closing the distance using the Body Flicker Technique.
"So fast! But..."
Compared to Aburame Ryōma, Asuma's speed was merely decent.
After all, Takeshi had endured daily beatings from jōnin. He was more than ready for surprise attacks.
He dropped into a low crouch, dodging Asuma's forceful punch. Seeing Asuma lifting his leg for a kick, Takeshi slapped both hands on the ground and swiftly pulled back, causing Asuma's kick to hit nothing but air.
"Nice dodge," Ito Makoto couldn't help but praise.
"Fast, sure—but still not as fast as me."
Takeshi took advantage of Asuma's unstable stance, throwing two shuriken to harass him while simultaneously charging forward.
If Asuma dodged the shuriken, he'd have to face Takeshi's follow-up directly. So...
Thud!
The two shuriken embedded themselves in a chunk of broken wood—Asuma had used the Substitution Technique to escape, appearing a short distance away.
"Then I'll return the favor with your own tactic."
Asuma threw a kunai, copying Takeshi's strategy.
Seeing the kunai heading toward him and Asuma aiming at his likely dodge spot, Takeshi didn't use the Substitution Technique. Instead, he relied on his superior speed, deflecting the kunai with a shuriken and immediately following up with a kick aimed at Asuma, who had just arrived.
Asuma crossed his arms to block the kick, planning to grab Takeshi's leg. But he hadn't expected the deceptively slim Takeshi to be that strong—the kick sent him flying.
[He wrapped chakra around his foot? Impressive chakra control.]
Even as he flew back, Asuma mentally praised Takeshi.
[Well then...]
Using his momentum, Asuma began forming hand seals mid-air.
"Fire Style: Ash Pile Burning!"
A thin stream of smoke spewed from Asuma's mouth, quickly engulfing Takeshi.
"Damn it, that jutsu!"
Ito Makoto, cursing Asuma's recklessness, prepared to step in and end the match.
"Then I'll counter with this..."
Takeshi also started weaving hand seals, finishing just before Asuma could ignite the ash.
"Wind Style: Great Breakthrough!"
A howling gust blew the smoke away, causing Asuma to choke and cough violently.
"Holy crap, what kind of monsters are in this Class?! Everyone can use ninjutsu?"
Ayame Raidō couldn't hold back his awe.
"Seriously... Seems like Kakashi isn't the only genius in that class."
Yamashiro Aoba nodded in agreement.
"Want to give up now, Asuma?"
Seeing Asuma on one knee, coughing hard, Takeshi kindly offered a reminder.
"Hmph, the fight's not over yet."
Wiping his mouth, Asuma took a stance that looked oddly familiar to Takeshi.
That stance? Is he going to end me with three punches?
Takeshi thought sarcastically, readying himself.
"You're not the only one who can use Wind Style!"
Asuma lunged forward—not with taijutsu, but forming more seals.
"Wind Style: Gale Slash!"
A blade of wind surged toward Takeshi.
Fire and wind at his age? No wonder—he's the Third's son, after all. Looks like Takeshi's gonna lose.
Even as Ito Makoto admired Asuma's talent, he mentally declared Takeshi the loser.
"This level of Wind Style won't beat me."
Takeshi didn't dodge. Instead, he stood firm and formed seals: Rat – Snake – Horse – Dog.
"Wind Style: Vacuum Serial Waves!"
A cross-pattern of wind blades burst forward, shredding through Asuma's gale and continued toward him with unstoppable momentum.
Though Takeshi's version of the Vacuum Serial Waves wasn't as powerful as Danzo's due to his age, it was still more than Asuma could handle.
Thanks to his Kekkei Genkai, Takeshi naturally had a higher chakra reserve than Asuma.
"Whoa, that's some insane Wind Style."
"If it were me, I wouldn't have dodged that in time."
"Hmph, if it were you, you'd already be in pieces all over the field."
Students watching from the classroom erupted with admiration.
"Earth Style: Earth Wall!"
Ito Makoto realized if he didn't act, Asuma would be a corpse. He quickly summoned a wall of earth to block the attack and used the Body Flicker Technique to appear beside Asuma, dragging him out of harm's way.
The moment the Vacuum Serial Waves hit the wall, they shattered it instantly and sliced forward, skimming past Ito Makoto's back.
"So fast... Unbelievable. A kid this age using Wind Style at that level?"
Ito Makoto felt a few strands of hair sliced off and thanked his lucky stars he'd blocked it.
Otherwise, he'd have gone down in history as the first Konoha teacher to die during a class demonstration.
Boom!
Finally, the Vacuum Serial Waves smashed into the outer wall of the schoolyard, demolishing a large section before dissipating.
"Hey, Takeshi! Why the hell would you use such a terrifying jutsu on me?!"
Asuma's face went pale at the damage, yelling from Ito Makoto's arms.
"Didn't you say you wouldn't hold back?"
Takeshi scratched his face awkwardly—he hadn't expected the Wind Style to be that powerful either.
"Yeah, but you were aiming to kill me, you maniac!"
"Then what about your Ash Pile Burning? If you'd lit that up, I'd be toast."
"My Fire Style doesn't have that kind of insane power!"
"Says who? That thing burns hotter than Obito's Great Fireball. It could've roasted me alive!"
"Eh? What's this got to do with me?"
A very confused, swollen-faced Obito chimed in.
