THE RULER OF MAP

Chapter 40: CHAPTER 40: The Rival in the Pathway

The air in the chamber grew heavy with tension as the tall cultivator stood blocking the entrance, a wicked smile spreading across his face. Zhang Xin's fingers tightened around the hilt of his sword, his eyes locked onto his opponent. He could feel the cultivator's aura—strong, commanding, and filled with hostility. This was no ordinary person, and Zhang Xin knew that the Pathway of Treasures was not a place where anyone could afford to let their guard down.

The man's voice echoed through the chamber, cold and mocking.

"You're brave, young warrior. But bravery alone won't win you the treasures here. You'll need more than that to survive," the cultivator sneered, his voice dripping with condescension.

Zhang Xin didn't flinch. His heart beat steadily, and his mind was focused. He had faced dangers before and emerged victorious. This time, it would be no different. With a fluid motion, he drew his sword, the gleam of the blade reflecting the soft light from the orb on the pedestal.

"I didn't come here to talk," Zhang Xin said, his voice steady. "If you want the orb, come and take it."

The cultivator laughed, his laughter echoing off the stone walls. "Very well, if that's how you want it." He stepped forward, and the ground beneath him seemed to shake with the power of his presence. With a sudden movement, he launched toward Zhang Xin, his hand crackling with energy as he prepared to strike.

Zhang Xin's instincts kicked in. He raised his sword just in time to deflect the cultivator's blow, the force of the impact sending a shockwave through his body. He staggered back slightly, but quickly regained his footing. The cultivator's attack had been powerful, but Zhang Xin was quick, his reflexes honed through years of training.

The cultivator grinned as he readied himself for another attack. "Not bad," he said. "But let's see how long you can last."

With a flick of his wrist, he conjured a barrage of energy blasts that shot toward Zhang Xin, each one a deadly beam aimed at different parts of his body. Zhang Xin's eyes narrowed, and without hesitation, he leaped into the air, narrowly dodging the first blast. The other beams followed him, but Zhang Xin was faster, twisting and flipping in midair as he avoided them.

The cultivator watched with growing irritation. "Impressive," he muttered. "But I'm not finished yet."

He raised both hands, gathering a massive amount of energy in his palms. The air around him crackled with power as he formed a massive sphere of concentrated energy. With a swift motion, he hurled the sphere at Zhang Xin, the sheer force of the attack creating a vacuum that pulled at everything around it.

Zhang Xin's heart raced. He knew he had to act quickly. With a deep breath, he gathered his own energy, channeling it into his sword. The blade glowed brighter than ever before, radiating with a fierce light as he charged toward the sphere. The two forces collided in a violent explosion that shook the very foundations of the chamber.

The shockwave sent both Zhang Xin and the cultivator flying backward, but Zhang Xin quickly regained his balance, landing lightly on his feet. His sword was still glowing, its energy burning brightly, but he could feel the strain in his body. The cultivator, on the other hand, had stumbled but was already rising to his feet, his eyes filled with fury.

"This is getting interesting," the cultivator hissed, wiping the blood from his lips. "You're stronger than I thought."

Zhang Xin's breath was steady, though his body was starting to show signs of the fight's toll. His muscles ached, but he refused to show weakness. He would not allow this man to take the orb from him, not now.

The cultivator clenched his fists, and the room seemed to grow colder. He released another barrage of energy, this time even more intense. Zhang Xin knew he had to finish this fight quickly, or he would be overwhelmed. His eyes locked onto the cultivator's movements, reading his every gesture. The cultivator was strong, but his arrogance was his weakness.

As the energy bolts came at him, Zhang Xin ducked, weaving between the attacks with agility. He closed the distance between them with a single, swift motion, and in that moment, he could see the cultivator's eyes widen in surprise. Without hesitation, Zhang Xin struck.

His sword cut through the air, its blade glowing with the energy he had been channeling. It connected with the cultivator's chest, and the impact sent a shockwave that reverberated through the chamber. The cultivator staggered back, gasping for breath, his hands clutching at the wound where Zhang Xin's sword had struck.

For a moment, the chamber was silent. The other cultivators who had been watching the fight remained motionless, their eyes wide in disbelief. Zhang Xin stood still, his sword held low, watching his opponent carefully. He had won, but he didn't lower his guard. He knew that in this place, nothing was certain.

The cultivator let out a low growl, his face twisted in pain and frustration. "You... you're stronger than I thought," he spat. "But this isn't over. Remember this, young warrior. The Pathway of Treasures is not a place for the weak. I'll be watching you."

Zhang Xin didn't respond. He simply turned and walked toward the pedestal, his hand reaching for the glowing orb. The cultivator's words echoed in his mind, but he didn't let them distract him. The orb was within his grasp, the first of the treasures he needed to find.

But just as he touched it, a booming voice rang out from behind him.

"Stop right there."

Zhang Xin turned slowly, his heart still racing from the fight. He saw a figure emerging from the shadows, a tall, imposing figure cloaked in dark robes. The voice carried an undeniable authority, and the figure's presence was suffocating.

"You've won your battle, but this Pathway is far from over," the figure said, his voice deep and resonant. "You have what you came for, but there are far greater challenges ahead. Don't think this will be easy."

Zhang Xin's gaze hardened. He had fought hard for this orb, but he knew that this was only the beginning. The Pathway of Treasures was full of mysteries and dangers, and he was only beginning to understand the true scope of the trials he would face.

With a calm, determined expression, Zhang Xin stepped away from the pedestal, gripping the orb tightly in his hand. His journey was far from over.
