Chapter 511: The Reality That Dragged & Dangled
[HAWI]
The dome was down.
The Savasci knights were sleeping.
Rukiya Greyson is gone.
Awuor Hawi was wide awake, and in serious denial. She had been in and out of consciousness for almost two days and even then, she hadn't figured out what could have been so interesting about dying that had gotten Rukiya sacrificing herself.
She was angry that her mate had given up everything just like that. It didn't sit well with her, and Hawi wasn't sure she would ever forgive Rukiya for doing that.
It all just didn't make any sense, because one moment, she was happy to have the people who had caused her pain and suffering, and the next, she was losing the greatest blessing she had gotten in her life. It all had happened too fast and Hawi hated it.
"You're awake," Malika said as she looked at her mistress who was currently outside the pack house, looking like she had never been alive even for a day.
Hawi looked like a ghost that had just woken up from retirement and it wasn't encouraging at all. Her eyes were sunken, her bloodied hair still red, and her clothes were still the same too.
When they had tried to undress her and give her a change of clothes, Hawi had refused, hence she was here like this, in the same clothes that she had lost her mate in. She was in so much pain and it was obvious, but Malika could tell that this time was different.
Perhaps it was because Hawi had lost the love of her life or maybe because Hawi was thinking of something else. But one thing Malika was certain of, was the fact that Hawi had changed, a lot.
"You should be resting, Malika," Hawi said as she watched the sun slowly rise high in the sky. It looked so beautiful; you would think that today was just a regular day in the pack that had seen tens of thousands murdered in a night.
It wasn't like that mattered as much, but what broke them the most was how everything had happened. Perhaps they could get a chance to redo all of this, right?
Maybe in another life it wouldn't hurt so bad and they would be able to live happily, not that they had dealt with the worst of their enemies, no? Or was it just a dream that they wouldn't ever get to the end of because of how cruel shit had gotten for them?
Oh, but life was playing games with them, the kinds of games that didn't seem fun for anyone who was trying to grasp a reality right now. It was like the world was a chess board and they couldn't even be pawns on the damn board.
They were nothing, but was that all for them?
"Some other day. Mistress. Tell me, something is eating you up," Malika pointed out, as she sat next to Hawi in the hope that this would make it easier for the both of them to get through this and try to make things right.
They had been trying to think of what had happened, and making sense of it all, but nothing was right. It was like everything had happened so fast and yet so slippery.
It was almost impossible to gauge what in the hell had become of their dreams and their desires. Perhaps it would have been easier if life was not as hard for them all right now, yeah?
"It was too easy," Hawi pointed out defeatedly as she looked at the field they had spent the nights fighting for their people.
It was plain and so empty you would think that it was just the fountain of all the luck in the world and not the one place that had taken what they love from them.
This place was supposed to haunt them, and yet as Hawi looked at it, she couldn't help but have so many questions. Nothing made any sense, and the fact that her mate had chosen to sacrifice herself for some reason was driving Hawi crazy.
It was so unlike Rukiya and she needed her answers before she completely lost her mind, because frankly, that was where she was headed right now. Her sanity was playing the long game with her and it wasn't pleasing at all.
"You need to get some more rest, Mistress. You need to mourn so we can open the gates of Olyana for everyone," Malika said and for a moment Hawi looked at her in confusion.
Of course, anyone who didn't know hate was happening could have assumed that Malika had chosen to be selfish and not consider her mistress' feelings, but that was the opposite.
If the people came home, they would be certain that they had won the war and they wouldn't have to worry about much. But then they hadn't exactly won the war just yet.
The war still left some Russels in the wind and there was a bastard alpha in the dungeon. It was not something that could be dealt with easily and they both knew it, but even then, they still had to think.
"Why did she interrupt Jer that night? All could have been over and yet when did the impossible happen? I can't even wrap my head around the fact that she had done that. It felt like a betrayal and like we were stuck in a permanent season of pain and hate.

"Ruru had to have known the price would be too much for all of us to bar, right? She had to have known that her loss would have me burning down the realms and yet she still did it, why?" Hawi asked.
Malika smiled at her for the first time since they had been through the chaos and the war. They had come from the sacred island and got thrust into the middle of the battlefield and nothing had shaken Hawi.
It was almost like she was made for the battlefield and made to defend those that she needed to. She was a warrior, when she was, but then was that something she needed to be reminded of all the time?
Even as Malika shared with her, Hawi's mind was still filled with a lot of positionality and she was wondering what had to have been so important for her Rukiya to give herself up.
"You talk as if she is alive," Malika said and Hawi stared at her like this was the one thing even she should have known. Maybe it was because finally the girl was coming to her senses or maybe it was because of the endless chaos along the way.
This wasn't what she had imagined when she had come back home and this was the kind of sit that no one was supposed to embrace at any degree. Perhaps this was why it was easy for Hawi to not overthink.
Or was this her trying to be rational and not fuck things up?
"But she can't be dead, Malika. She was the only good thing left in my life; I refuse to accept that it was so easy for her to leave me like that. Everything just isn't fair and I don't want to be the one to accept such things.
"I can't imagine a life without her, and I refuse to adorn mourning clothes. My Rukiya has to be alive, Malika. She has to be. Maybe she is sleeping, so I will wait for her to wake up. I don't care how long it takes, I will not give up on her, or on us... I can't.
"I don't know how to live a life that doesn't have her, you know. I don't know how to function without Rukiya Greyson and that is a risk I don't want to explore. I can't just lose her like that.
"She didn't die in war, she was stronger than everyone there, and she was more powerful than even me. It's not possible," Hawi said with a sad smile as she stared up at the skies.
Awuor Hawi was hoping and Malika knew that it was not going to be easy for her. She knew that this was the kind of pain that even time wouldn't be able to heal completely because of how immortal they were.
Hawi had lost a lot and in that moment, the only thing that could ever make sense for them was for Rukiya to wake up. but then they had all seen what had happened.
Granted, they were still in shock and reeling from the madness of everything, but they had been there. They had heard the last breath they had seen the eyes droop and more than anything, when they had felt the mind links be cut a little too harshly, Rukiya was staring right at them.
But if this was the only choice that could give them a sane Hawi, then they would take it. It wasn't going to be hard because frankly, having Hawi with them was also the only thing standing between them and tearing the entity realm apart.
They had been so close-knit over the years, and it made no sense that they were having a blank space where one should not have been. It was a cruel pact and it just didn't fire them all.
Perhaps it was some sort of a dream that they had been thrust into, but what if it wasn't a dream? What if love and life weren't the only things that they had to deal with this time? Would they be brave enough?
"Oh, Hawi," Malika sighed as she stared at her Mistress.
