The Queen and Her Pawn

Chapter 7: Be WITH Me

The sharp, sterile glow of the boardroom's overhead lights reflected off the sleek glass table, casting faint ripples of light onto the walls. Ethan stood near the window, his back to the room, gazing out at the city that stretched endlessly before him. The weight of the game he was playing bore down on him, but his expression remained unreadable, a mask honed by years of careful practice.

Behind him, the door opened with a soft hiss. He didn't need to turn to know it was Victoria. Her presence was electric, filling the room like a thunderstorm ready to strike. She moved with purpose, her heels clicking against the polished floor as she approached the table.

"Mr. Ward," she said, her tone sharp and deliberate.

"Ms. Lane," Ethan replied, turning to face her with a faint smile that didn't quite reach his eyes.

Victoria's sharp gaze fixed on him, dissecting every nuance of his posture, every flicker of emotion—or lack thereof. She placed a folder on the table, the sound echoing softly in the quiet room.

"Have a seat," she said, gesturing to the chair across from her.

Ethan obeyed, settling into the chair with his usual composed ease. For a moment, neither of them spoke, the silence between them crackling with unspoken tension.

Victoria leaned forward, her fingers laced together. "You've done excellent work so far, Mr. Ward. But as you know, I don't make decisions based solely on performance. I also value trust. And right now, I find myself questioning yours."

Ethan's expression remained calm, but there was a flicker of something in his dark eyes—amusement, perhaps? "Trust is a strong word, Ms. Lane. What exactly do you find questionable?"

Victoria slid the folder toward him, her gaze never leaving his face. "Your background. The inconsistencies. The gaps. I want answers, Mr. Ward."

Ethan opened the folder, his eyes scanning the contents with practiced detachment. He flipped through the pages slowly, as though weighing his response. Finally, he closed the folder and looked up, his expression unreadable.

"With all due respect, Ms. Lane," he said, his tone smooth, "I've worked hard to get where I am. Every detail of my background has been carefully curated, every move deliberate. If there are gaps, it's because I've chosen to leave certain things behind."

Victoria's lips pressed into a thin line, her piercing blue eyes locked onto his. "Convenient," she said. "But I don't deal in half-truths, Mr. Ward. If you want to continue here, you'll need to do better than that."

Ethan leaned back slightly, his hands resting lightly on the arms of the chair. "And if I don't?"

Victoria's smile was cold, almost predatory. "Then you're of no use to me."

The room fell silent, the air thick with tension. Ethan met her gaze, his calm demeanor unbroken. "Understood," he said finally. "But you should know, Ms. Lane, that trust is a two-way street."

Victoria's eyes narrowed, her expression unreadable. "What exactly are you implying?"

Ethan's smile deepened, but he said nothing, letting the silence speak for him. Finally, he stood, buttoning his suit jacket with practiced ease. "If there's nothing else, Ms. Lane, I'll get back to work."

Victoria watched him leave, her mind racing. Ethan Ward was an enigma, a puzzle she couldn't quite solve. And for the first time, she wondered if she was the one being played.
