Chapter 7: The Reckoning
The morning after their conversation, the estate felt different darker, more suffocating, as if the walls themselves were closing in around her. Aria tried to shake the feeling, but the truth was that things had irrevocably changed between them. She could still feel the echo of Elias's touch, his words, heavy and burdened with the weight of everything he had kept hidden from her. It was a secret she had demanded, and now that it was hers to bear, she wondered whether she had made the right choice.
Her gaze drifted toward the grand staircase that spiraled down into the foyer, a reminder of the world she had stepped into. It was a world of luxury and power, yes, but also a world ruled by shadows. Elias had warned her, but she had insisted on walking this path, on sharing this burden with him.
"Aria," a voice called from behind her, and she turned to find Elias standing in the doorway of the sitting room. His dark eyes were fixed on her, his face a mask of unreadable expression.
"Is something wrong?" she asked, her voice steady despite the rising anxiety in her chest. She could feel the tension building again, the unspoken words hanging between them like a storm waiting to break.
Elias stepped into the room, his presence filling the space like a tangible force. "There's something I need to tell you," he said, his voice low, almost reluctant.
Aria's heart skipped a beat. She had known this moment was coming. There was always more to the story, more to uncover. But she had made a choice. And now, she would stand by it, no matter what he said next.
He paused for a moment, his gaze flicking to the window, as though searching for something outside, something he couldn't bring himself to say. Then, with a sigh, he turned back to her.
"I've been hiding something from you," he confessed, his voice barely above a whisper. "Something I can't keep from you anymore."
Aria's breath caught in her throat. She took a step closer, her gaze never leaving his face. "What is it?"
Elias ran a hand through his hair, a motion that spoke of frustration and resignation. "I'm not just a businessman, Aria. I'm involved in things far more dangerous than you can imagine. The people I deal with… they don't play by the same rules. They're not just interested in money they want power and control. And they'll do anything to get it."
The words sent a chill down her spine. She had known Elias's world was full of shadows, but this… this was something deeper, something darker than she had anticipated.
"Who are these people?" she asked, her voice steady despite the fear that was slowly creeping in. "What are you involved in?"
Elias hesitated, his eyes darkening with a mixture of guilt and fear. "I've been working for a syndicate," he said, his voice barely a murmur. "They're more than just a criminal organization. They control everything businesses, politicians, law enforcement. They have their hands in every part of society, and they're always watching, always listening."
Aria's mind reeled, trying to process the enormity of what he was saying. A syndicate? A criminal organization with such far-reaching power? It was a world she had never imagined, a world that was far more dangerous than she had ever been prepared for.
"But why are you involved with them?" she asked, her voice tight with disbelief. "You don't need them, Elias. You have everything you could ever want without them."
He looked at her, his expression tormented. "It's not that simple. I didn't have a choice. I was born into this life. My family owes them everything. They hold the strings to everything I've built, everything I've worked for. And if I don't comply, they'll take it all away take you away."
Her heart clenched at the mention of her name, the implication that Elias was willing to risk everything to protect her, even if it meant staying in the very world he had wanted to shield her from. "So, you're saying you've been trapped by them all this time?" she asked, her voice softening. "That's why you've been pushing me away?"
Elias nodded, his gaze fixed on the floor. "Yes. I've been trying to protect you, trying to keep you from getting dragged into this mess. But now... now I realize it's too late."
Aria took a deep breath, her mind racing as she processed everything he had just told her. She had thought she understood the risks, but this was something she hadn't been prepared for. A criminal syndicate. Power-hungry men who controlled the world from the shadows. It was the kind of danger that couldn't be ignored, and it was closing in on them both.
"You should've told me sooner," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "I could've helped you. We could've figured something out together."
Elias looked up, his eyes filled with regret. "I didn't want you to be involved, Aria. I couldn't live with myself if anything happened to you because of me."
She reached for him, her hand brushing his arm gently. "I'm already involved, Elias. You don't get to protect me by keeping me in the dark. We're in this together now, whether you like it or not."
His eyes searched hers, a flicker of hope flashing in his gaze. "You're sure about this? You don't know what you're asking for. Once you're in, there's no turning back."
"I've already chosen," she said firmly. "I'm with you. No matter what comes next."
For a long moment, neither of them spoke. The weight of his confession hung heavily between them, but there was something else now a shared understanding. The world they had both been trying to deny had come crashing down around them, and there was no escaping it.
"I'm going to need your help," Elias said quietly. "We need to prepare. The syndicate won't let us go easily. We'll need to outsmart them, outmaneuver them. It's the only way to survive."
Aria nodded, her resolve hardening. "We'll do it together. I won't back down."
Elias's lips curled into a faint, weary smile. "I never thought I'd find someone like you, Aria. But I'm glad you're here."
"Good," she said, her voice steady. "Now, let's take them down."
