Chapter 23: 023 Rich Sister
Hua Mi unexpectedly cast her eyes downwards at Fang Xin, surprised by White Lotus's willpower.
In her past life, Fang Xin was cowardly, vain, frail, and proud, with little skill but no shortage of schemes.
Faced with even the slightest challenge, she would cry a river, leaving Hua Mi to fight the monsters while Fang Xin reaped the rewards. All in all, she was fickle and always causing trouble because she was so full of herself.
Who would have thought that Fang Xin, even when choked to the point of foaming at the mouth, would still seek help from the garrison team.
Turning to the two members of the garrison team, it seemed they instinctively felt something off about Hua Mi and immediately drew their guns, pointing them at her,
"Don't move, face the wall and stand, raise your hands, palms against the wall, no fidgeting, hurry up!"
Hua Mi stood still, unmoving; she wasn't too keen on doing as the garrison team ordered.
Since the area was secluded with hardly anyone around, she might as well knock these two garrison members unconscious and just kill Fang Xin.
As she was planning this, a deep male voice came from behind the two garrison members,
"What's going on?"
The two looked back, immediately saying,
"Boss?"
Gong Yi, dressed in the rescue team's tactical jacket, sporting a neat buzzcut and frowning, walked forward. His sharp eyes scanned the ground where Fang Xin, who had been crawling, suddenly got up and ran away.
He then looked at Hua Mi,
"Should we chase her?"
Hua Mi shrugged,
"No need, just don't chase me when I kill her next time."
It was futile for the garrison to chase Fang Xin back; Hua Mi wouldn't be able to kill her in front of them anyway.
Gong Yi nodded, then turned to look at the two still aiming their guns and gestured for them to lower their weapons as he quietly instructed,
"I know her, she's my... friend."
"Oh~"
The two members of the garrison team seemed quite familiar with Gong Yi. Hearing that Hua Mi was Gong Yi's friend, they immediately put on a friendly smile, somewhat embarrassedly looking at Hua Mi,
"Sorry about that, we're just doing our job."
Hua Mi shook her head; she understood the situation. If she hadn't, she'd already be fighting with these garrison members.
One of them, slightly quicker on the uptake, glanced at Hua Mi and then at Gong Yi, smiling meaningfully,
"Boss, when did you get such a beautiful... friend?"
Don't blame them for gossiping; Gong Yi was always at the garrison camp and never seemed to have had any female friends.
The flies buzzing around him were all male.
So, the sudden appearance of such a beautiful, well, friend naturally made them hopeful for a sign that the boss might be off the market.
Gong Yi lifted his foot to kick both men,
"Why ask so many questions? Don't you have patrols to do? Get lost."
After he had sent the two garrison members away, he turned to look at Hua Mi, his eyes sparkling,
"These are two of my boys from the garrison team; they're not bad guys."
Hua Mi hummed in response, thinking of checking on her stand, so she simply kept her head down without speaking.
Gong Yi walked up to her, hands in his pockets, a trace of fatigue in the corners of his eyes. After all, even a tough guy finds nonstop rock-turning and rescuing exhausting.
But he didn't show any impatience, just looked down at Hua Mi, his gaze deep, lost in thought.
Suddenly, Gong Yi spoke up,
"That woman who ran away, is she the vixen that seduced your boyfriend?"
"Ex-boyfriend!"
Hua Mi corrected Gong Yi. Her mind wandered for a moment, and suddenly lifting her gaze in surprise, she looked at Gong Yi,
"How did you know I was cheated on?"
That memory was quite distant for Hua Mi, after all, the heartache was like a lifetime ago.
So she had forgotten a lot of things.
When had she met Gong Yi and talked to him about her woes?
Gong Yi didn't answer her but instead looked a bit sour, eyeing Hua Mi as if he was looking at a Playgirl who had toyed with him, his tone rigid,
"You live in the rescue center now??"
That should be the case, since Hua Mi's neighborhood had collapsed into such a state.
Although Hua Mi's market stall remained unscathed, she was still a member of the survivors. As long as she gave her ID number, there would naturally be someone to arrange for her to settle down in the rescue center.
Muttering a confirmation, Hua Mi didn't tell Gong Yi that she actually still lived amidst the ruins, and just pointed in the direction behind Gong Yi,
"I have a stall over there today."
"I'll walk you back."
Gong Yi turned around and strode forward. After two steps, he noticed that Hua Mi was walking slowly, so he slowed down to match her pace, murmuring instructions,
"If you see that vixen again, don't bother fighting her. The rescue center doesn't allow brawling. If you have any problems, just go to the Garrison; they'll help you out."
"Just slapping a mistress, no need to dirty your own hands."
He whispered as if he was a husband about to leave on a long journey, instructing his wife, with an odd sense of familiarity.
Hua Mi pondered deeply but couldn't for the life of her remember when she had interacted with Gong Yi in her past life.
So, was Gong Yi the overly familiar type?
Was he? Probably...
After Gong Yi escorted her back to her stall, he glanced at Chi Chuan, who greeted Hua Mi cheerfully,
"Rich sis, I just helped you sell quite a bit of sanitary napkins and batteries; look, they paid by scanning your QR code. Did you receive it?"
"And yeah, all of your Self-suction Breathing Devices and ethanol are sold out, rich sis. Aren't you gonna thank me?"
Only then did Hua Mi take out her phone, opened the wallet app, and found a long list of incoming transactions.
She smiled at Chi Chuan,
"Thank you."
The transaction records in the W Wallet only showed sanitary napkins and batteries; the records for the Breathing Machines and ethanol went directly to the "Apocalypse Supermarket - Cashier System" because the items she had put on her stall were only those Breathing Machines and ethanol that had entered Level 4 storage.
So even though Chi Chuan helped her sell quite a few sanitary napkins and batteries, that money wasn't counted in her "Cashier System."
But it was a kind gesture, and all Hua Mi could do was express her gratitude.
Chi Chuan waved his hand as if it was nothing, then turned to look at Gong Yi standing next to Hua Mi. He squinted and asked with suggestive eyebrows:
"Rich sis, is this your boyfriend?"
"Huh? No..."
Hua Mi was about to deny it when a member of the Garrison walked by, calling out to Gong Yi,
"Boss."
Then he turned to Hua Mi, wearing a smile identical to Chi Chuan's.
That kind of smile... it was somewhat indescribable, like guessing something but not being able to specify it clearly, and it wouldn't be appropriate to ask directly.
Gong Yi nodded at Chi Chuan and then looked down at Hua Mi,
"I'm off, contact me if you need anything."
Then, turning around, he went to talk with the Garrison member, and they both left like that.
Hua Mi watched Gong Yi's retreating figure, pursed her lips, and sat down behind her stall.
He left in such a hurry; there were still so many things she hadn't had the chance to ask.
