The New Elemental God

Chapter 20: Chapter 2.4 - Red Canyon

Looking around beyond the funnel rock, the place looked like a battlefield. There were all sizes of stones indicating things were thrown into the walls of the canyon damaging the natural formations.

Calder was opening his mouth to speak when Shu took the turn and started before him.

"This is the Red Canyon, the training ground for Earth Gods."

Adam smirked at the old man who rolled his eyes, meanwhile Shu was zooming between the rocks.

"What am I supposed to do? Throw rocks at Grandpa?"

"Would that motivate you?" Calder defied the boy with his eyes. "We will stay here until you manage to throw any rock at me without using your hands."

"Fuck me." This time it was Adam who rolled his eyes.

Cal was in front of him a few meters away and Shu was sitting on top of the balancing rock, watching them from a safe distance. The young God could feel the expectations in the air.

At first he pondered about how he would make something that was not part of his body move. Flying was easier to learn because he only had to control himself.

After analyzing the situation for what he judged was too long, the Playboy got sick of being watched and just chose the first rock he laid eyes on.

"Just do it. Don't think too much about it." The Water God was the one responsible for the first tip, while stroking his beard without a care in the world.

"Visualizing also helps." Shu had already shifted positions, to dangling upside down with effortless ease.

Adam forgot about them and looked at the rock, trying to call it with his mind.

Nothing happened.

Instantly Adam felt stupid. He felt like he was 5 years old pretending he was a superhero.

"This is dumb. Just throw something at me and I'll use my powers to stop it."

Something hit him in the head the second he finished talking.

"Ouch!"

"You asked." The Wind Deity was using their powers to play with a few shards of stone and giggling at Adam's pissed expression.

Frustrated at the whole thing, the Playboy picked up a handful of red rocks and started to throw them at Shu. Sadly none of them managed to get close to the playful creature who didn't even flinch.

Adam didn't give up. The laughter kept getting louder. He bent down and picked up more stones and was throwing them a little higher each time until he made Shu have to move in order to not get hit.

As he kept missing because the Deity was too fast, he was feeling more and more pathetic. That sentiment gave life to a new one, anger that increased with each failure.

He wanted to hold more stones at one time to throw them faster to not give time for Shu to deflect them. If he could use his powers he would just shoot all the stones at once. At least one would hit them.

Shu was having much fun playing around and smirking with every stone that passed by. Casually he tossed another stone at Adam. It hit him right between the eyebrows.

"Headshot!"

Every bone in the God's body began to shake. He closed his fist squeezing the shards so tight a thin dust escaped through the gaps of fingers.

"Yahoo!" Calder celebrated with Shu.

They were both laughing at Adam whose face was getting red as the desert itself.

Clutching his nails on his palms he let out a roar of fury. The ground began to vibrate with the God's growl lifting the dust and stones of all sizes with it. He pictured himself shooting all of it at them.

Adam wasn't truly seeing anything. All he could hear was the echoing laughter in his mind, like ghosts taunting him from the shadows.

One of those whispering voices came to his ear

"You are just a pathetic daddy's boy."

It was the voice of his oldest friend. The same voice he heard on the night he died.

At the apex of his rage he aimed at the two smirking faces in front of him. On command all the stones of the valley fired at them. The simple fragile rocks sounded like missiles hitting the ground creating one tall cloud of red dust.

An explosion of shards echoed throughout the canyon. Bits of rock hit Adam on the face but he didn't move. His breaths came short and heavy, matching the feverish heat radiating from his body.

As the smoke slowly began to settle, the God's heartbeat followed. His conscience crawled back as a frightened puppy that came out of hiding after the thunderstorm was over.

Adam shook his head as the micro particles of dirt got into his eyes. When he finally was able to open them he realized what had happened.

"Guys?!"

None of his teachers were anywhere to be seen.

"This is not funny!"

The dust cloud was almost completely gone, allowing for a clearer view of the scenario. The balancing rock was crusted with stone shards. Larger rocks were embedded in the canyon walls, ones that hadn't been there when the Gods first arrived.

"Shit!"

The silence brought up Adam's self awareness. He did all of that. Willingly he attacked his companions with powers he did not know he had.

What if they were mad at him? Or worse.

The boy wanted to search for them but as he spun around in place he realized there was nowhere to look. Paying closer attention to the spot where he last remembered seeing Calder, Adam noticed a pile of stones. Standing beside it, he brought his hands to his head, his mind racing with confusion and anxiety.

"Those idiots! Why did they have to mess with me when I don't even know how to control this thing!"

Alone in a world he did not understand, the new God sank his knees on the dirt, defeated.

With his eyes closed going through what happened in his mind, Adam was surprised by a thunder strike.

"Adam!"

The boy fell on his ass as he heard the Water God's voice.

"You did it!" The familiar voices said as one.

Suddenly all the stones in front of him were tossed aside with an explosion, revealing Calder and Shu smiling happily.

"I knew he would." Said Cal to his accomplice.

Adam was sitting on the ground watching them act like nothing had happened.

"You're both sick. I'm not doing this anymore."

In the back of his mind that ghost voice kept repeating the same familiar phrase. He couldn't bear the laughing and joking around, it was too much.

Silent, he stood up and started to walk away. He needed space in order to stay calm and looking at their faces just made him wanna punch them.

"Hey, we're fine. It was just a joke, bro."

Calder was the one to step forward and try to stop him.

"Don't call me that." Upset, the Earth God brushed the old man's hand off his shoulder. "Take me back to Earth now."
