Chapter 18: Chapter 2.2 - Rest
Flying was becoming second nature, much like riding a bike. The more Adam practiced, the more his confidence grew. Under Calder's watchful eye, he pushed himself to go faster and higher.
It was liberating to feel the wind blowing on his hair and sustaining his weight. The newbie even attempted a few acrobatics, that gave him a thrilling chill in the stomach to see the world upside down. If it was earlier he could spend all day flying and probably would not feel tired.
"We are here."
Calder stopped in plain air looking ahead, hazy clouds hid the top of a mountain that divided the land in two.
"There's nothing here. I'm getting tired."
"Gimme your hand."
Adam was reluctant to do as he was told but he did it anyway. He was unsure he could fly the rest of the way.
Without any warnings, Adam was pulled by the arm so strongly his joints were stretched out but before he could yell the world blinked.
Less than a second later they were meters away from the mountain exterior. A sudden sickness hit Adam that couldn't help but spit his guts out in the air.
"What the fuck?!"
"Sorry, I should have given you a heads up." The old dog scratched his head giggling like a little girl, it was disturbing.
After taking his time to clean his mouth, Adam recomposed himself and brought his attention to the colossal rock in front of him. The naked rock was exposed, attracting the boy to it. He traced the fissures carved by years of strong winds and rain until he found a handle.
"You gotta be kidding me!"
"Open it." Cal was almost jumping with excitement.
Sighing boringly, the Playboy took the golden handle in his hand and pulled.
"Don't you people know how to build normal homes?"
From within, a bright light blinded them first before revealing the outstanding structure.
The lightning came from an opening at the ceiling of the triangular shaped cave. On the ground the flat obsidian floor was so shiny it reflected the sunlight back up. The black garnet walls were four times higher than Adam and covered in lamps fueled by a yellow flame.
The living room furniture was made of black and golden marble so polished the Playboy God could see his own reflection on the center table.
"What is fun about normal?" Calder replied to the question after seeing the sparkle in the boy's eyes.
Adam still lived with his parents back in his old life. He was thinking about moving out once he was done with college in the next year but never got to do it. Having that cave to call home was a fulfillment to him.
"This is insane!"
The young man kept going deeper inside the house that was divided in sectors. The cave was a path into the mountain and each turn was a different room.
Next came the dining room together with the kitchen in a special oval ceiling area. The main colors were still black and gold in the counters and floors. The dining table with four seats was made out of a tree trunk that was sliced and polished.
The best part was yet to come. Filling the whole kitchen with an outdoors atmosphere, where there should have been a solid wall, a grand opening revealed a sweeping panorama of the valley beyond the mountain. The dark, rugged rock framed the scene like a masterpiece, making it truly breathtaking.
"Who built this place?" Adam walked to the edge of the opening to gaze down at the abyss.
"Every new God adds something different to their home, so it's not a one-man's job."
"What else is there?"
The Earth God in training was walking around touching things like a spoiled kid in the mall. Calder couldn't reprehend him since it was his house, after all.
"You should see your chambers. Usually it's the best part."
Cal pointed at a narrow passage at the opposite side of the room. Adam did not waste any time. The God had to slide between the rocks like he was in a video game. On the other side, the room was made of black and white marble from the floors to the walls.
That room felt smaller but in a cozy way. The walls all met in the center creating the shape of a diamond.
The bed was placed over a glowing blue lake that was connected to a small waterfall at the farthest side of the room. The water trails crossed the room and disappeared in a crack on the floor.
"How?" Adam was by the waterfall picking up water with his hand.
"I helped to put it there." Cal's tone had a pinch of grief that went unnoticed by the Youngling. "Did you like it? If you don't, you can stay with me…"
"NO! I love it. That won't be necessary."
Adam's exaggerated reaction made the old man crack a laugh. Looking around everything pleased the new tenant but something wasn't right.
"So, what now?" The Earth God asked as he sat on his new bed.
Smoothing his beard, the gray-headed man took a few steps to think. There was so much Adam needed to learn that it was hard to choose a start-line.
"What do you wanna know?"
Judging by the little time they had together, Calder didn't think a traditional approach would work for Adam. Over the centuries the wise man developed a teaching method for New Gods but it was the first time they had a Playboy as a God.
"What do Gods do all day?"
The boy laid back on the bed. It was soft and comfortable just like a warm hug after a long night of partying, exactly what he needed.
"It depends on the God. It's not like we have an agenda and obligations. You are free to do whatever you want…"
A loud noise interrupted the God's monologue. As Calder walked by the bed he found a snoring Adam dead asleep.
It figures, the Water God thought. As a new God arrives the effort on the body is draining. No one is used to holding that much energy inside themselves, which is ironic. Adam did extremely well on his first day, considering his temper and emotions.
It's not common to see a God sleeping, since they don't need to, so Calder walked out quietly to let the young man rest.
Knowing what he would have to deal with in the future, he would need much sleep.
