Chapter 418
The bombardment of the wizards was incredibly intense.
The trees that stood tall across the mountain were reduced to ash. Even though the mountain was low, its steepness had lessened enough for us to surge upward with some effort.
With this kind of impact, I firmly believed that all the monsters must have met a gruesome end.
“Some monsters are still alive!”
“I can feel the magic from the monsters. It seems the wicked ones have cast spells on them!”
I couldn’t help but realize that I had underestimated the truly insane ones who infiltrated not just the Academy but also the Central Noble Cult.
There were indeed creatures that, even gasping for breath, rushed forward, some dragging themselves with their last remaining limbs.
Even if those beasts survived the devastating attack just moments ago, they ought to be gasping their last breath on the cold earth. The sight of them barreling forward with wild, unhinged eyes was anything but normal.
“Looks like they’ve certainly played their tricks on the beasts as well.”
Unlike the creatures of the Count’s House, which were soaked in magic, the madness displayed here was a clear indication that something was terribly wrong.
We had grossly underestimated the mad group hiding even in the Academy and steadily infiltrating the Central Noble Cult.
“Elvis, I’m counting on you.”
“Just trust me!”
I handed over my lump of mana to Elvis, asking him to take care of the monsters.
“Knights, take down the remaining scouts! Quickly, so the archers and wizards can take their positions!”
Leading the knights, I faced the scouts alongside the two remaining spirits.
There were more than I had anticipated. However, given the earlier attack that shook the mountain, the enemies were still reeling from the shock.
With the monsters bared their teeth, I couldn’t let up until Elvis had dealt with all of them. I kicked up dirt to obscure their vision.
That dust cloud narrowed our line of sight as well, but in that gap, a figure suddenly emerged, sword brandished.
“What the hell do you think you’re doing creeping up here!”
“It’s amusing to see you in this state when you’re about to die.”
Clang!
The sound of steel clashing rang out as I blocked the scout’s attack and engaged him in combat.
“Orna, assist those knights over there.”
“Meow!”
“And Tania─”
“I know what to do without you saying it. You want me to burn all the pathetic ones clinging to life, right? Leave it to me!”
Once I finished giving commands to the spirits,
I forcefully deflected the enemy’s sword as he ranted about something.
Clang─!
The scout’s body was sent tumbling backward.
Boom─!
Grabbing the bow slung behind me, I swiftly took down one enemy and started supporting the engaged knights.
A greater number of enemies awaited us than I had guessed. Still, it seemed our earlier attack had landed effectively; the enemies were too dazed to rally!
As long as the monsters still showed their fangs, we couldn’t let up until Elvis had dealt with all of them.
Before I knew it, we were engulfed in a cloud of dust that not only obscured the enemy’s sight but ours as well. From that cover, I drew my sword in anticipation of the coming danger.
“The scoundrels dare to approach here!”
“They’re all about to meet their end.”
The sound of clashing steel rang as we engaged the scouts.
After blocking their attacks, I remarked, “Orna, support those knights.”
“Meow!”
“And Tania—”
“I got it! You want me to set ablaze all the pathetic creatures still breathing, right? Just leave it to me!”
Having finished issuing commands, I reacted swiftly against the enemy.
Clang─!
With a harsh blow, I knocked one scout back.
Bang─!
In a flash, I grabbed my bow that was already strung and took down an enemy. As I started assisting the knights engaged in battle, a sharp wind burst forth, scattering the dust, finally revealing the result we’d hoped for from Elvis.
“The way is clear! Archers! Gather your arrows and move up now!”
“Reserve wizards! Prepare your spells from the top!”
The soldiers who had been tied down by the monsters surged up the mountain to join forces.
“We have killed all the scouts and reinforcements that rushed up from the main forces. From now on, this place belongs to the Baron’s House.”
Soon after, Hanelrn also reported completion of the occupation, staining her sword—a blue glow now crimson.
“Deputy Commander Ray…!”
I turned at the call from behind me, the voice belonging to the deputy rather than the head of the family.
I found a familiar face, the noble’s archer who I had conversed with previous.
“I’ve brought all the archers from the Baron and Count’s houses…! Please give us orders!”
Despite the scratched voice, every soldier behind with a tightly gripped bow radiated fierce determination.
This was the ideal timing, a golden opportunity.
“Archers, prepare to fire!”
Leading them, I aimed my arrows at the enemies below the mountain.
The monsters weren’t only lurking along our path. Even though the cult’s numbers were few, the throngs of monsters exceeded a hundred.
I gathered mana at the tip of my arrows and yelled, “Fire!”
Boom─!
Countless arrows sped through the air, tearing it apart.
There was hardly a moment to observe the arrows soaring magnificently. All the archers were busy stringing their next shots to let fly.
Soon, the beleaguered beasts, barely clinging to life, began tumbling down the steep slope.
‘Just hunting down the monsters alone won’t change a thing.’
I had to eliminate the cult’s shamans who were putting them to work.
Taking the percussion from my quiver, I readied myself.
‘Shione must be doing well.’
Shione had effortlessly guided our shots to mark our positions with arrows.
For a moment, I felt the void left by her absence, but I shook off the distraction and strung the arrow in my bow.
I needed to wrap this up properly; only then would I get the chance to brag to Shione later.
“Dorothy!”
“Yes!”
“Hit the mark where I fired the arrow!”
“Understood!”
As I began to bury myself in deep, vivid emotions of hatred towards the enemy, they were already holed up down below, waiting in despair.
Let them feel the realization of their hard-earned fortifications crumbling under my assault. It was imperative that I obliterate their key facilities.
“Wizards! Prepare powerful destructive spells!”
Dorothy, usually composed and with a serene aura, shouted fervently as she rallied.
With her shouting giving me confidence, I shot my arrow without any hesitation.
Whizzz─!
A clarion sound erupted as my prepared percussion flew from my fingers.
The wizards, drawn in by the clear sound of the percussion, could surely lock onto my arrow even amidst the many floating shots.
As the unending volley of percussion fell, the ground trembled.
Boom─!
Again and again, the earth shuddered under the might of the barrage.
“Five makeshift buildings have been blown apart!”
“The number of monsters has significantly decreased! The enemy force has taken substantial damage!”
The situation unfolded well, and I couldn’t help but smile at the easygoing progression.
Seeing our forces gain momentum brought a thrill to everyone.
“Archers, shoot in accordance with my mark! Infantry, protect them while slowly advancing forward! Hanelrn! Give the infantry room to advance with the knights!”
Now we had to strike like a tidal wave and sweep away the remaining enemy troops.
It was a taxing task to bring this large force just to capture a mere fifty enemies. We had burnt one mountain through sheer magic.
Realizing the heavy toll it had taken on the cult, they began to recognize that all of this was turning against them.
“The monsters are turning to flee!”
“The shamans! The shamans are beginning to retreat alongside the monsters!”
The ones who sensed a lack of victory began to abandon their stronghold and make their escape.
‘There’s no way I can just sit back and let them slip away.’
They had gathered here to spread that cursed magic, and had the punishment not been this absolute, this land would’ve become increasingly dangerous to tread on. How could I even entertain the thought of sparing them?
“Dorothy, send a signal to the Special Assault Brigade. Let’s block their retreat.”
Their pace didn’t appear to be particularly swift.
Without the blessing of spirits, I still judged we could reach the retreat path ahead of them and ambush them.
Woosh─!
After watching various golden and red orbs scattering in the sky, I bellowed with conviction.
“The enemies have begun to flee! Victory is close at hand, so everyone pursue them and annihilate them!”
