Chapter 7: Background Check
Asher
"No!" Her voice was stern. "I didn't leave The Nightshade pack to be a prisoner here again. If you had just let me go, you would have to deal with me any more." I studied her character and her behaviour, and honestly, she reminds me so much of Isolde. That little stubborn nature of hers has always made her make rash decisions that I couldn't think of.
I was not ready for a new mate not after what happened to Isolde. Watching her bringing her frustrations before me, it was only more difficult to resist her. Being my prisoner is the only way I could keep her here and protect her but she was blinded by her emotions to see it.
"Yes, you being my prisoner is just to get everyone off your backs. Trust me if I let you go, it ain't be up to a week for your body to end up in a ditch somewhere. I am saving your life, it doesn't matter if you like it or not."
"You said you'd protect me or you just want control." I narrowed my eyes at her, the anger began to flare up again..at the same time, I was at ease.
"This is me protecting you... Besides, I find it typically insulting that you'd think someone of me. You are my prisoner, yes but I am giving you freedom with a short leash. And you'd have a job and make some earnings on your own. You also get to make friends if you like but you don't leave the premises or the kingdom in general. I'd find you." I explained to her. Honestly, she would be a fool not to accept it because I wasn't going to hurt her unless I saw that she was a danger to me and those who worked under me. Those whom I have sworn to protect. I won't hesitate to bring her down if it comes to that.
"Fine. I think I would be safe here without people coming after me every hot minute." I didn't want anyone to know about her, it just... All of this still felt new to me and I didn't know why else someone like her would stir such emotions from me. It was the most insane thing. It was a good thing that she was out of danger now, but I didn't know how long it was going to last.
I could see how she struggled to keep her balance. She was feeling dizzy, I held her just as she was about to fall. "Come here, you haven't eaten and taken your meds."
"You said you wanted to speak to me. I knew if I had not..." she coughed.
"That's alright." I carried her to her room. Forcing her to eat a little of the pancakes that were made for her. The eggs were a bit warm but she didn't eat so much. I gave her her meds and she was already sleeping in no time.
"What are you doing to me, Hailey Reed?" I muttered under my breath as Marcus disrupted my wild thoughts. I signalled for him to go to the study. I met him there as he handed me the files.
"What did you find out? " I flipped the pages.
"Hailey is a twin." I glared at him, hoping he didn't mean that.
"You are joking "
"No, Alpha. She is. Her twin went missing years ago while they were in the neighbourhood. It was said Hailey was the weird one and had always been tagged as cursed after her sister went missing. She has been on her own since being seen as an outcast."
I shook my head, holding the file as tight as I could. She has been through a lot. "What about her parents?"
"Her parents were branded traitors because they spearheaded the rebellion that wanted the blacks out of power. It is said that they had a higher goal but no one knew who it was."
"Damn, she has been through a lot and it is clear she is all about survival. That's how tough she has had it.."
"I know, but the incident that happened was why Levi wanted her back. I think they were mates."
I gritted in anger. "Yes, they were mates.. what about the girl that she had supposedly hurt?"
"If she is dead, then maybe he has already taken care of the rites. But she wasn't found. There is no hard evidence that Hailey has hurt anyone. " I thanked him for the information. I trusted Marcus to be there I needed something done so discreetly.
"What are you going to do to her?"
"Keep her until I know more. She is just an omega and I believe there is more to her than she let on. Quite secretive, too, makes what else she is hiding.
"You know that's not what I am asking about alpha. "
"I am not ready for a mate. I believe this is the Moon's way of punishing me after what happened to Isolde. I have no room for anyone else right now." I have been pumped with regrets over the years, and that was why I went off the grid immediately after I became the Lycan king. My irrational decision of not dealing with the rogues when I needed to cause the death of my first mate, Isolde. The grief and depression had me in chains for years and I do not see myself being with anyone else.
"You have to be ready. You cannot keep her here if you don't want her to be what the moon goddess wants her to be for you. For years, you have been punishing yourself for the death of Isolde, but I think it's high time you move on. I know you might not know her but you have to at least imagine the possibility of her being your one true mate."
I scoffed. "There isn't any possibility. Anyone that gets close to me dies; that's the reality of it. I am not ready to let anyone in just to go through that again.." Marcus was about to object, but I stopped him. "Make the preparations; she will start training tomorrow; I want to know the extent of her wolf."
