Chapter 7: Episode 7: Into the Unknown
Scene 1: The Start of a New Path
The morning sun filtered through the dense canopy of trees, casting dappled shadows across the forest floor. Christopher adjusted the strap of his katara on his shoulder as he followed Elliotte, who led the way with purposeful strides.
"So," Christopher began, breaking the silence, "where exactly are we headed?"
Elliotte glanced back briefly. "We are headed towards the Woodshadow Forest."
Christopher asked with a confused look. "Woodshadow Forest? Why do you wanna go there?"
Elliotte began, "There's a place I need to investigate—a ruin mentioned in my mentor's journal. It's supposed to hold clues about the next ring of light."
Christopher raised an eyebrow. "Ruin? Sounds dangerous."
Elliotte shrugged. "Probably is. That's why I'm going."
The two walked in relative silence for a while, the sounds of the forest—chirping birds, rustling leaves, and the occasional distant roar of a beast—their only companions. Christopher, ever curious, decided to press further.
"You think Anther's gonna show up again?
Elliotte's jaw tightened at the mention of Anther. "If he does, I'll be ready."
Christopher smirked, spinning one of his kataras in his hand. "Good. Because I'd hate to be the only one fighting if things go south."
Scene 2: A Whisper of Danger
The duo reached a narrow mountain path by midday. The air grew colder as they ascended, the vibrant greens of the forest giving way to rocky terrain. Elliotte paused, surveying the trail ahead.
"We're close," he said. "The ruin should be just over that ridge."
Christopher nodded but then stopped in his tracks. His eyes narrowed as his nostrils flared slightly. "Wait... Do you smell that?"
Elliotte frowned. "Smell what?"
"Blood...," Christopher said, his voice low.
Before Elliotte could respond, a low growl echoed from the rocks above. Both of them froze, their hands instinctively reaching for their weapons. A shadow moved swiftly across the ridge, followed by another. Elliotte's eyes widened as several beasts emerged, their glowing red eyes fixed on the intruders. They were massive, wolf-like creatures with matted fur and jagged teeth.
"Dire wolves," Christopher muttered. "And they're not happy to see us."
"Great," Elliotte said, drawing Exilibur, which shimmered into its sword form. "Do we have to fight these things!?"
Christopher grinned, spinning his kataras. "Either you kill them or become their prey. You can't always resolve these types of situations with mere words alone."
The wolves didn't wait. They lunged down the slope, snarling and snapping. Elliotte met the first one head-on, his sword clashing against its claws. Sparks flew as Exilibur's light seared the beast's hide, forcing it back. Christopher, meanwhile, danced nimbly between two wolves, his kataras slashing in quick, precise arcs.
"Not the time for jokes, Elliotte!" Christopher snapped as he ducked under a wolf's jaws, his katara flashing. "We need to end this quickly!"
"Gee, thanks for the advice!" Elliotte shot back, parrying another attack and sending one wolf howling in pain.
The fight was intense, but the two worked in tandem, their movements almost synchronized. Finally, the last wolf collapsed, its body dissolving into a dark mist that scattered in the wind. Elliotte lowered his sword, breathing heavily.
"That's new," Christopher said, watching the mist dissipate. "I've never seen wolves do that before."
Elliotte sheathed Exilibur, his expression grim. "Neither have I. But it can't be a coincidence. Something's not right."
Scene 3: The Ruins of Arcanthia
By late afternoon, they reached the ruins. Ancient stone pillars jutted out from the earth, covered in moss and strange glowing runes. The air was thick with an unexplainable tension, as if the stones themselves were holding their breath.
"This place gives me the creeps," Christopher said, his usual bravado replaced with unease.
Elliotte nodded. "Stay alert."
As they stepped into the ruins, the glow of the runes intensified. Elliotte paused, feeling a strange pull towards the largest pillar at the center. He placed a hand on the cold stone, and the runes flared brightly. A deep hum resonated through the ground.
Suddenly, a voice echoed around them, low and sinister. "Who dares disturb the resting place of the Ruins?"
Christopher spun around, his kataras ready. "What was that?!"
Elliotte smirked hesitantly. "Things just can't go smoothly for me, huh."
A figure materialized from the shadows, tall and imposing, cloaked in darkness. Its face was obscured, but its presence was suffocating. Elliotte's grip tightened on Exilibur.
"You seek the rings," the figure said, its voice dripping with disdain. "But you do not understand the cost."
"Who are you?" Elliotte demanded.
The figure chuckled darkly. "I am but a guardian of the past. And you, boy, are not worthy."
With a flick of its hand, the figure summoned a wave of dark energy that reverberated through the ruins. Then, the figure spoke in a tone heavy with ancient power:
"The path of light will twist and break,
Through trials, pain, and endless ache.
The bearer of the light shall fall,
At the hands of one who once stood tall.
The final blow from the one you once called friend,
The journey ends in ashes and dust."
The words hung in the air, heavy with ominous meaning. Elliotte's jaw tightened, but his resolve remained unshaken.
"Is that supposed to scare me?" he asked, his voice defiant.
The figure's shadowy form wavered with a malicious laugh. "It is not fear you should feel. It is the truth you must face."
Without warning, the figure raised a hand, and the ruins erupted with energy. Shadows coalesced into monstrous shapes, advancing on Elliotte and Christopher.
The shadows drew closer, and with them, an eerie laughter echoed from the figure's lips. "You think you can defeat me? The real challenge is just beginning."
"Here we go again," Christopher muttered, bracing himself. "You've got a knack for finding trouble, you know that?"
Elliotte didn't respond. His focus was on the guardian. "We'll prove we're worthy."
With that, they plunged into the fight, the ruins becoming a battleground of light and shadow.
