Chapter 18: 19. The Source of Darkness
The Red Earth Continent boasts far superior scenery and resources compared to the surface nations. The finest resources from the Four Seas and the Grand Line are supplied here first.
Here, you can behold the world's most fertile soil and breathe the world's freshest air. Even so, they still wear resin oxygen masks, further purifying the air before breathing, to demonstrate their status.
Along the extravagant, ostentatious path leading to the gate, a magnificent wall blocked the view.
"The city of Bukar..."
Even among the Celestial Dragons, there is a hierarchy. Those with the highest authority have the title "Saint" appended to their names, while Bukar is considered a secondary world noble, with the title "Lord" appended to his name.
But regardless of their rank, they are all unattainable beings to others.
"Halt!"
As usual, guards stood at the gate. They wore tall hats and carried swords at their waists. In the world of pirates, most cold weapons are stronger than hot weapons, with only a few exceptions, such as Usopp.
These were members of CP1. Their spirit, energy, and vision far surpassed those of the CP7 stationed below. Their eyes were devoid of any unnecessary emotion. They also had a special nickname: Celestial Guards.
"Navy! Show your identification!"
Two tall and imposing CP1 agents' hands were already on their sword hilts, their palms coated in a black substance.
"Armament...Haki..."
CP1 agents rarely appeared in public; their primary duty was protecting the Celestial Dragons. Kong hadn't expected such powerful Haki users to be mere gatekeepers. Note that in Marine Headquarters, the lowest-ranking officer capable of using Haki is a Captain, excluding those in the outer seas.
Kong didn't speak, but presented his credentials.
"Marine Headquarters Lieutenant Colonel Kong. Identity confirmed. You may pass. Be mindful of your words and actions in Bukar City, otherwise we will execute you according to the law!"
Having said that, they returned Kong's credentials and stepped aside.
The entire process was carried out without the slightest delay, like a machine.
"Death soldiers..."
Kong detected no emotion in their eyes, only the gaze of a death soldier.
Kong adjusted his cape and walked into the city with his head bowed.
This was what Sengoku had told him when he first took him out of Marineford: When traversing Red Earth Continent, the first rule is to keep your head down. Otherwise, if any Celestial Dragon finds you displeasing, they'll execute you on the spot without it being a major incident.
Bukar City was incredibly luxurious, or rather, all Celestial Dragon cities were incredibly luxurious.
Everywhere, shops were adorned with jewels, yet the people in the streets lacked any light in their eyes. They walked with their heads bowed, and most wore slave collars around their necks – slaves allowed to roam freely within the city.
Kong didn't look around; he wanted to pass through this opulent dead city as quickly as possible.
"Thump."
At that moment, a little girl, no taller than his thigh, bumped into his leg. Kong's pupils constricted at the sight of the girl's white hair.
"S-sorry, sir! Please don't punish me!!!"
The little girl knelt before Kong in terror, repeatedly banging her head on the ground.
Kong snapped out of it and reached out to help the little girl.
"It's alright, don—"
"Bang!"
Blood blossomed, crimson spraying into Kong's eyes.
The little girl's face still held terror, but blood steadily seeped from her temple.
She collapsed weakly, the red staining her white hair.
"Tap tap..."
Footsteps approached. Kong didn't look to the side; he dared not, or perhaps he feared he couldn't control himself.
A cold voice echoed.
"Marine, you didn't see anything."
That tone could only belong to the CP1 death soldiers.
"She's just a child... I... what could I possibly..."
The CP1 agent's voice remained devoid of emotion.
"Don't misunderstand. I didn't kill her because she bumped into you. Lord Bukar doesn't like his playthings tainted with the scent of other men. She touched you, so she had to die. Lord Bukar is quite fastidious about his slaves."
Kong's teeth were practically grinding.
"Then... what do I do with her?"
The soldier pointed to the side.
"Just throw her in the trash. Lord Bukar is kind; he won't ask you for compensation. Just throw her over there. There are cleaners who will collect them later."
"Collect...?"
"Of course, they're the best fertilizer for cultivating fertile soil."
A wave of intense nausea washed over Kong. He felt he wasn't breathing fresh air, but the stench of endless sin.
"I... understand."
Kong bowed his head, picked up the slain little girl, and walked step by step towards the trash bin.
With every step, his legs felt as heavy as lead.
"I... I'm sorry..."
Kong was helpless. He wanted to rage, to stand up and fight.
But reality was often far more cruel.
He didn't have the power, at least not yet.
If he acted on impulse now, Kong would only lose his life. Forget about avenging her; he couldn't even give the little girl a proper burial. The only thing he could do was carefully place her in the trash bin.
Having done so, Kong had only taken two steps back when—
"Bang!"
An explosion echoed from behind, a powerful shockwave carrying a thick smell of gunpowder blowing Kong's cape wildly.
The word "Justice" embroidered on it looked utterly ridiculous in the midst of that chaos.
"Puhhahahaha! Did you see that? That marine! Hahahahaha, this is hilarious!"
An exaggerated laugh rang out. A blond man, dressed in something resembling a spacesuit and wearing a special resin oxygen mask, walked over.
He was tall and handsome, unmistakably the lord of this city, Bukar.
While in the anime, Celestial Dragons were depicted as ugly, reality was completely different. They possessed the most abundant resources, and eight hundred years of rule had clearly resulted in superior genetics compared to ordinary people. Their looks were naturally top-notch.
Even Charlos Saint, whom Kong had glimpsed once in his past life, could be considered a handsome man. It was then that he realized the true pirate world was vastly different from his expectations.
Bukar strode forward with an arrogant gait, a chain in his hand leading ten little girls, like he was walking dogs.
"Well, well, Marine, so easily frightened? With such a weak mindset, how can you protect us noble Celestial Dragons?"
The explosion was caused by the slave collars around the girls' necks. It was obviously Bukar who detonated them.
Kong lowered his head, his face darkened, his rage barely contained.
He felt his body was beyond his control, turning and lifting his leg to confront Bukar. He couldn't care less anymore. No matter how cautious or low his tolerance was… he was still a human being.
"Hup!"
Suddenly, Chaton appeared beside Kong as if teleporting, his hand clamping down on his shoulder like an iron vise, preventing him from moving an inch.
"Oh my, my, Lord Bukar, has my little brother caused you any trouble?"
