Chapter 14: Chapter 14: Frozen Betrayal
The Land of the Immortals was a desolate and chaotic place, filled with crumbling ruins of civilizations long forgotten and a sky that churned endlessly with dark, red clouds. Kael stood at the threshold of an ancient temple, the ominous structure emanating an energy so dark that even he, the Demon Prince, felt its weight pressing against his very essence.
He had come to claim the Skull of Beelzebub, a relic of immeasurable power said to contain the essence of the Lord of Gluttony himself. His father, Lucifer, had sent him on this perilous mission, promising that the skull would give him power beyond imagination. But Kael's heart was torn. The image of Luna, his beloved, haunted him with every step. She was the one who had helped him open the gates to this cursed land, using her mermaid blood to break the ancient seals.
The last thing he remembered was her tearful smile, whispering, "For you, I would do anything."
Kael pushed open the temple doors, the groaning of ancient stone echoing in the still air. Inside, the stench of decay and sulfur was suffocating, and the walls were lined with grotesque carvings of demons devouring their victims.
At the center of the chamber lay the skull, resting on a pedestal surrounded by a circle of flame that burned without heat. The skull was monstrous, its hollow eye sockets glowing faintly with a sickly green light.
Kael stepped forward, his crimson eyes narrowing. He could feel the power emanating from the artifact, a pulsing energy that seemed to call out to him.
"You were meant for this," the voice in his head whispered.
He reached out and grasped the skull. The flames around it roared to life, and a shockwave of dark energy surged through him. Kael staggered but didn't let go, his body convulsing as the skull's power merged with his own.
When the flames died down, he stood taller, his aura more potent than ever. He could feel the immense strength coursing through him, but it was not enough to overshadow the void in his heart.
"Luna," he whispered.
As Kael exited the temple, the ground trembled beneath his feet. The sky darkened further, and a towering figure materialized before him. Lucifer, his father, the King of Hell, stood with his arms crossed, a sinister smile playing on his lips.
"You've done well, my son," Lucifer said, his voice a smooth blend of pride and menace. "The Skull of Beelzebub belongs to me now."
Kael's grip tightened around the skull. "I didn't go through all of this just to hand it over to you, Father. This power is mine, and I will use it to create a new world—with Luna by my side."
Lucifer's laughter echoed like thunder. "Luna?" he said mockingly. "Your precious mermaid? Oh, Kael, you really don't know, do you?"
Kael's eyes narrowed. "What are you talking about?"
Lucifer stepped closer, his fiery gaze locking onto Kael's. "The moment she helped you open the gates, she sealed her fate. The mermaids are all but extinct now, wiped out by the very creatures who feared their power. And your dear Luna? She's frozen in time, trapped in a prison of her own making."
Kael froze, his breath catching in his throat. "You're lying."
Lucifer smirked. "Am I? You've been so blinded by ambition that you didn't even notice what you left behind. Go, see for yourself. But remember this: the power you hold now is meaningless without the wisdom to wield it. You'll return to me, begging for guidance."
With a flick of his hand, Lucifer vanished, leaving Kael alone with his thoughts.
Kael's rage boiled over as he processed his father's words. If Lucifer was telling the truth, then Luna's sacrifice had been in vain, and her people had paid the ultimate price.
Clutching the skull, Kael summoned a portal and descended back to the mortal realm.
The transition was jarring, the vibrant chaos of the Land of the Immortals replaced by the cold, damp air of the human world. Kael landed in a forest, the trees swaying ominously as his presence disturbed the natural order.
His first thought was to find Luna, to see if what Lucifer said was true. If she was frozen, he would find a way to free her. If her people were truly gone, he would avenge them.
And if Lucifer thought he could control him, he would learn just how wrong he was.
Kael's crimson eyes glowed brighter than ever as he set off toward the horizon, a storm of power and vengeance brewing within him.
