Chapter 99: Time to Flee!
Mikhailis and Aria crouched behind a stack of crates, their breath coming in short, controlled bursts. The warehouse air was thick with dust and the tang of magic, making Mikhailis's nose itch. He suppressed a sneeze, focusing instead on the voices drifting from the nearby room.
"You worthless piece of trash!" A gruff voice bellowed, followed by the sound of something heavy being slammed against a wall.
"If you can't finish the enchantment, we'll find someone who can!"
Aria flinched, her face pale in the dim light.
"Callen," she whispered, her voice barely audible.
Mikhailis squeezed her shoulder reassuringly, his eyes scanning the warehouse. Guards stood at strategic points, their postures tense and alert. This wasn't going to be easy.
<Mikhailis, I've mapped out the guard positions. There are seven in total, with two directly outside Callen's room. The chimera ant soldiers report no other heat signatures in the immediate vicinity.>
Thanks, Rodion. Time to put that big brain of yours to work. We need a distraction.
Mikhailis's mind raced, weighing options and discarding plans as quickly as they formed. His grand scheme of taking over the syndicate would have to wait. Right now, Callen needed their help.
"Aria," he whispered.
"I've got an idea, but it's going to sound crazy."
Aria raised an eyebrow, a wry smile tugging at her lips.
"Crazier than your plan to take over a criminal syndicate?"
Mikhailis grinned. "
Point taken. Look, we need to get the guards away from that room. I'm thinking we leave them a little breadcrumb trail."
He pulled out a small notebook and pen from his pocket, scribbling quickly. Aria peered over his shoulder, her eyes widening as she read.
"Are you insane?" she hissed.
"You want to tell them our escape route?"
Mikhailis winked at her.
"Trust me, it's all part of the plan. Now, we just need to plant this where they'll find it..."
<Mikhailis, might I suggest utilizing the ventilation system? The chimera ants have identified an access point approximately 3.7 meters to your left.>
Rodion, you beautiful AI, you. Mikhailis thought, his grin widening.
"Aria, see that vent over there?" He pointed discreetly.
"Think you can work your magic and get this note inside? Make it look like it fell out of someone's pocket."
Aria looked skeptical but nodded. With a few muttered words and a flick of her wrist, the note vanished, reappearing moments later just inside the vent grate.
"Now what?" she asked, her voice tense with anticipation.
Mikhailis's eyes gleamed with mischief.
"Now, we wait for the fun to begin."
They didn't have to wait long. Within minutes, a guard passed by the vent, pausing as something caught his eye. He bent down, retrieving the note, his eyes widening as he read its contents.
"Boss!" he called out, his voice urgent.
"You need to see this!"
As the guards congregated around the note, Mikhailis and Aria made their move. They slipped towards Callen's room, their footsteps muffled by the commotion.
Aria worked quickly, her fingers tracing intricate patterns in the air as she dismantled the magical locks on the door. With a soft click, it swung open.
Inside, Callen lay crumpled on the floor, his clothes torn and his face bruised. He looked up as they entered, his eyes widening in a mix of fear and hope.
"Aria..?" he croaked, his voice weak.
"What are you—"
"Shh," Aria soothed, rushing to his side.
"We're getting you out of here. Can you walk?"
Callen nodded weakly, his gaze shifting to Mikhailis.
"Who's he?"
"A friend," Aria said quickly, helping her brother to his feet.
"We can trust him."
Mikhailis grinned, giving a mock bow.
"Mikhailis, at your service. Pleasure to meet you, though I wish it were under better circumstances. Now, let's get out of here before our little distraction wears off."
They made their way out of the room, Callen leaning heavily on Aria. Mikhailis took point, his eyes darting back and forth as they navigated the warehouse.
<Mikhailis, the guards have taken the bait. They're converging on the eastern exit, leaving the western route clear. I suggest you proceed with haste.>
Roger that, Rodion. Time to make our grand escape. While I doubt they are that stupid.
As they moved, Mikhailis couldn't help but feel a thrill of excitement. This was the kind of adventure he'd dreamed of, the kind of story he'd read about in light novels back on Earth. He glanced back at Aria and Callen, a pang of empathy cutting through his excitement. They'd been through so much, trapped in this dark world of crime and magic.
I'll get them out of this, he vowed silently. And then, we'll turn this whole system on its head.
They were halfway to the exit when a shout rang out behind them.
"Hey! Stop right there!"
"Run!" Mikhailis yelled, grabbing Callen's other arm to help support him.
They burst out of the warehouse into the cool night air, the sounds of pursuit close behind. Mikhailis led them down a twisting alley, his mind racing.
"Aria," he panted as they ran, "take this."
He pressed a small piece of paper into her hand.
She glanced at it, confusion etched on her face.
"What's this? Another note for the guards? Have you lost your mind?"
Mikhailis grinned, despite the danger.
"Maybe a little. But trust me, it's all part of the plan. We're going to take down this syndicate, but we need time. For now, we need to focus on getting rescued."
"Rescued?" Callen wheezed, stumbling slightly.
"By who?"
As if on cue, a familiar voice rang out from ahead.
"There they are! Cerys, on your left!"
Mikhailis's grin widened as he saw Lira, her elegant form a stark contrast to their grimy surroundings. Beside her stood Cerys, her sword already drawn, and Serelith, purple hair wild and eyes gleaming with excitement.
Of course, his running to this place is not a coincidence. On his glasses, Rodion is projecting the route towards the location of Cerys that is in the middle of reprimanding Serelith, while Lira defending herself saying that she also saw Cerys getting drawn to a weapons tore and didn't even remember about protecting Mikhailis.
As Mikhailis followed Aria, Rodion has spread some of the worker ants to search for the location of Cerys and the others.
Aria skidded to a stop, her eyes wide with disbelief.
"Who—what—"
"Friends," Mikhailis said simply, his voice filled with relief and a hint of mischief.
"Told you we'd get rescued."
Cerys moved with lightning speed, her sword a blur as she engaged the pursuing criminal guards. Within moments, they lay groaning on the ground, thoroughly outmatched.
As expected of the lone wolf knight...
<Her strength is perhaps only slightly weaker from the Queen's knight, Vyrelda>
Lira rushed forward, her usual composed demeanor cracking slightly as she checked Mikhailis for injuries.
"Your Highness, are you alright? When we realized you were missing—"
"I'm fine, Lira," Mikhailis reassured her, patting her hand.
"Just had a little adventure, that's all."
Serelith cackled, her eyes roving over the scene with barely contained glee.
"Oh, this is delicious! Our dear Prince Consort, consorting with criminals and causing chaos. How wonderfully naughty!"
Mikhailis winked at her. "What can I say? I like to keep things interesting."
"You didn't 'play' at her, right~?" Serelith whispered to him, but he could feel the pinch on his waist.
Aria and Callen stood frozen, their eyes darting between Mikhailis and his unusual rescue party.
"Prince... Consort?" Callen, Aria's little brother whispered, his voice faint.
Mikhailis rubbed the back of his neck, looking sheepish. "Ah, yeah. About that. Surprise?"
Cerys, having dispatched the last of the guards, rejoined the group. Her expression was a mix of exasperation and grudging respect.
"My lord, while I admire your... initiative, I must remind you of the danger you put yourself in. Lady Elowen entrusted us with your safety."
Mikhailis's expression softened at the mention of Elowen.
"I know, Cerys. And I'm sorry for worrying you all. But..." he glanced at Aria and Callen, his eyes hardening with determination.
"Sometimes, I just got the urge to do exciting things."
Lira sighed, shaking her head fondly. "You never cease to surprise us, my lord. Now, shall we return to the palace before any more trouble finds us?"
As they began to move, Mikhailis fell into step beside Aria. She was still looking at him with a mix of awe and confusion.
"I thought," she said quietly, "I thought you were just a flimsy and no-good prince consort... I guess I really did catch a big fish."
Mikhailis chuckled.
"More like the fish caught you. Listen, Aria, this isn't over. What we learned today, about the syndicate, the Technomancers... it's bigger than all of us. But we're going to fix it."
Aria nodded slowly, a small smile forming on her lips.
"You know, when I first saw you in that market, I thought you were just some lost, naive prince consort. But you're something else entirely, aren't you?"
Mikhailis grinned, his eyes twinkling with mischief and determination.
"Oh, Aria, you have no idea. This is just the beginning. We're going to turn this whole city upside down."
As they walked, Mikhailis felt a familiar warmth in his chest. This world, with all its magic and danger and intrigue, was starting to feel like home. And he was going to protect it, no matter what.
<Mikhailis, while I commend your bravery, I must remind you of the potential consequences of your actions. The syndicate will not take this lightly.>
I'm counting on it, Rodion, Mikhailis thought, his grin widening. This could be a great source of resource for us, after all.
As they made their way back to the palace, Mikhailis couldn't help but feel a surge of excitement. This adventure was just the beginning. He had a feeling that life in this fantasy world was about to get a whole lot more interesting.
And he couldn't wait to see what came next.
"Now, your highness," Cerys started. "Can you start explaining what happened here?" She asked, with her hand resting on her waist.
Her chin pointed at the lying criminal guards, and Aria and her little brother that are standing with fear.
Now how should I explain this to her...?
