The Delivery Driver

Chapter 3: Echoes of the past

The morning sun struggled to pierce through the dense cloud cover over Brinlake, casting a muted glow over the city.Ethan Cole sat at his kitchen table, Detective Laura Bennett's business card lying before him.The events of the past two days weighed heavily on his mind —the unmarked package, the eerie encounter at 47 Ashmoor Lane, and the detective's unexpected visit.

Determine to find some clarity,Ethan decided to revisit the scene. He donned his jacket, the fabric still damp from the previous night's rain and stepped out into the chilly morning air.The street of Brinlake were quieter than usual, the usual hustle subdued by an unspoken tension.

As he approached Ashmoor Lane,a sense of unease settled over him.The building at number 47 stood as it had before —dilapidated and foreboding.Ethan hesitated at the threshold, memories of the gaunt man flooding back.Summoning his courage,he pushed the door open.

Inside, the air was thick with dust and decay. The single lightbulb that had flickered during his last visit now hung lifeless.Ethan stepped cautiously into the room, the floorboards creaking beneath his weight. The table where he'd left the package was bare,no trace of the delivery remains.

Suddenly,a faint sound echoed from upstairs —a soft thud, followed by a dragging noise.Ethan's heart raced,he moved towards the staircase, each step amplifying the creaks and groan of the old wood.At the top,a hallway stretched before him, doors lining either side.

He approached the first door on the left, it's paint peeling and handle rusted.Pushing it open,he found an empty room, dust mites dancing in the shafts of light filtering through the cracked window. The next room was similarly barren. As he reached the door a sudden chill eveloped him.

Inside, the room was different. The walls were lined with shelves, each filled with old books and peculiar artifacts. In the center stood a desk, papers strewn across it's surface.Ethan approached, eyes scanning the documents. They appeared to be delivery logs, but the dates were decades old.Names and address filled the Pages, many of which he recognized as long- abandoned buildings in Brinlake .

One entry caught his eyes:"E.Cole –47 Ashmoor Lane –package #13." The date listed was from the previous day.His breath caught. How could his name be in a logbook that hadn't been updated for years?

A sudden noise behind him made him spin around. The gaunt man stood in the doorway, his eyes piercing .

"Curiosity can be dangerous,Mr.Cole," he said, his voice cold.

Ethan backed away, heart pounding ."Who are you? What is this place?"

The man stepped into the room, his presence overwhelming. "This is where the thread converge, where the past and the present intertwine. You were chosen, The delivery was merely the beginning."

Ethan's mind raced, trying to comprehend the situation. "chosen for what?"

The man smiled with a chilling expression."To uncover the truth,to see beyond the veil, but be warned the path ahead is fraught with shadows."

Before Ethan could respond, the man vanished, leaving only the echoed of his words. The room seemed to darken, the air growing colder.Ethan stumbled back, fleeing the building and into the overcast streets of Brinlake .

As he made his way home, questions swirled in his mind. What had he stumbled into? And what did the future hold?
