Chapter 48. The Initiation Ceremony
“You’ve delivered your message, now scram,” Si Wanning said harshly.
Gu Jinghong’s face twisted into an unsettling smile. “I’m looking forward to tomorrow,” he said, giving Yun Jin one last meaningful look while making a throat-slitting gesture.
Yun Jin stared back at him, pulling at her eyes and mouth to make an exaggerated silly face.
Gu Jinghong was at a loss for words, his smile faltering.
He let out a cold laugh and turned to leave.
“Who are you trying to scare?” Yun Jin called out loudly. “This young lady specializes in dealing with perverts. If you love blood so much, next time I’ll let you taste your own!”
Even as Gu Jinghong walked away, Yun Jin continued her taunts.
“If you’ve got the guts, come find me again. I’ll change my surname if I so much as frown…”
For the first time in his life, Gu Jinghong encountered someone so brazen. He gritted his teeth even harder.
“Leaving already? Don’t go if you’ve got the courage. Let’s chat some more…”
Yun Jin kept shouting.
Yue Zhao’s expression was complex. “Little Junior Sister, he’s already gone far away.”
Gu Jinghong was a peculiar character. Most people avoided him, and even Yue Zhao didn’t want to deal with him much.
But Yun Jin seemed determined to provoke him, as if afraid he wouldn’t come after her.
From what Yue Zhao knew of Gu Jinghong, he could only say that his Little Junior Sister had thoroughly secured his hatred. The other disciples in the sect could breathe easier for a while.
“Take a break and have some water,” Si Wanning said, handing her a cup.
Yun Jin took a sip, still unsatisfied. “Eldest Senior Brother, Second Senior Sister, I feel like I didn’t perform well just now. Do you think this Senior Brother Gu might not come looking for me next time?”
Yun Jin seemed worried.
She really wanted to play with Gu Jinghong some more.
Yue Zhao’s lips twitched. “…Little Junior Sister, you needn’t worry about that at all.”
Yun Jin was completely oblivious to her ability to attract hostility.
“That’s good,” Yun Jin sighed in relief, a dangerous smile slowly spreading across her face.
If Gu Jinghong came looking for her on his own, it would save her the trouble of seeking him out.
It was time to settle the debts from her past life.
Yue Zhao fell silent as he observed Yun Jin’s smile.
For some reason, he wasn’t worried about Yun Jin anymore.
He was actually a bit concerned for Gu Jinghong.
After all, Yun Jin’s mental state seemed even more unstable than Gu Jinghong’s.
As soon as this thought crossed his mind, Yue Zhao shook his head vigorously.
How could he think that way about his own Little Junior Sister as the Eldest Senior Brother!
There would surely be trouble at tomorrow’s initiation ceremony for new disciples. He needed to properly warn Yun Jin!
“Little Junior Sister,” Yue Zhao said, “I suspect Gu Jinghong will cause trouble at tomorrow’s ceremony. Though the entire sect will be present, I’m not sure what he might do. You must be extremely careful. I’ll keep an eye on your situation the whole time, and I’ll come immediately if anything happens.”
Si Wanning added, “I’ll be watching out for you too.”
Yu Songnian nodded solemnly.
“The whole sect will be there, and he still dares to cause trouble?” Yun Jin’s voice suddenly rose.
“You don’t need to worry too much, I’m just speculating…” Yue Zhao was trying to comfort her when he heard the excited second half of Yun Jin’s sentence:
“That’s wonderful!”
Yue Zhao was speechless.
Fine, forget he said anything!
He’d just have to be extra vigilant himself.
The next day, Yun Jin woke up early, in high spirits.
While Yue Zhao and the others were on high alert with serious expressions, Yun Jin looked like she was going on a picnic.
At the central square, the Sect Leader and the ten Peak Masters were already seated on the high platform.
Below them were the true disciples of each peak.
Most of these true disciples were usually out on various missions, with few remaining in the sect.
This was normal. In the Tianxing Sect, apart from the initial opportunity to exchange for free manuals, subsequent exchanges for manuals, pills, or magical treasures beyond one’s allotted share all required points.
The best way to earn points was by completing missions.
So these true disciples spent most of the year constantly doing missions.
Below the true disciples were the formal disciples of each peak and those under the Sect Leader.
These disciples’ treatment was far inferior to the true disciples, and most were less talented, though occasionally one or two might rise up.
Behind them were the outer sect disciples.
Outer sect disciples were at the bottom of the sect hierarchy. They received almost no resources and had numerous menial tasks daily. Many outer sect disciples had a status similar to servants. It was incredibly difficult for them to advance.
For these outer sect disciples, the risks of sect missions were too high. Most chose to do menial tasks to obtain basic resources for survival.
Among Yun Jin’s batch of disciples:
There were two true disciples.
One was Yun Jin, who joined the Celestial Sword Peak. The other was Ye Danxia, who became a disciple under the Sect Leader.
Eight became formal disciples, distributed among various peaks.
The remaining five were relegated to the outer sect.
Thus, at the initiation, their positions already reflected their hierarchy.
Although everyone knew the Celestial Sword Peak would soon have a new Peak Master, Yun Jin currently held the title of true disciple. She and Ye Danxia stood at the front.
Behind them were the formal disciples.
At the back were the few outer sect disciples.
The class system was already clearly defined at this moment.
Once everyone had gathered, Zhao Wuji stood up with a calm expression. “This recruitment has brought in fifteen new disciples. Among them, two true disciples.”
Zhao Wuji looked towards Yun Jin and Ye Danxia.
“Yun Jin, Ye Danxia, step forward.”
Ye Danxia’s face showed a hint of excitement as she thrust out her chest and stepped forward.
Seeing Yun Jin also step forward, her expression flickered slightly.
Although she knew Yun Jin would only enjoy this status for the final three months, having Yun Jin stand in the same row as her still made Ye Danxia uncomfortable.
She was the noble Celestial Spirit Root, while Yun Jin was merely a Five Element Root.
How could Yun Jin be worthy of the same rank as her?
But Ye Danxia remembered her Second Senior Brother’s promise, and a glimmer of schadenfreude appeared in her eyes.
After Eldest Senior Brother was forced by Yun Jin to make that agreement, Master felt it reflected poorly on the sect and had him go into seclusion for these three months.
Fortunately, Second Senior Brother had returned a few days ago.
This Second Senior Brother was more handsome than the eldest, and his protection of her was more overt.
This time, she hadn’t even said anything, but when Second Senior Brother privately heard about Yun Jin’s actions, he immediately decided to get revenge for her.
Ye Danxia had halfheartedly tried to dissuade him a few times, of course to no avail.
It seemed Second Senior Brother was still determined to take action today.
Ye Danxia glanced at Gu Jinghong instinctively.
Gu Jinghong gave her a smile, and Ye Danxia’s heart was instantly set at ease.
Whatever Second Senior Brother planned to do would surely succeed.
This time, Yun Jin would definitely be utterly humiliated!
