Chapter 13: The Encounter
After the intense battle, Arion and his companions sat down to catch their breath, drinking energy drinks to replenish their strength. The cool, refreshing liquid soothed their throats as they wiped the sweat from their brows. Despite their exhaustion, they knew their journey was far from over. Once they had recovered, they stood up, ready to continue their venture deeper into the dense, sprawling forest.
As they pressed forward, the group encountered various monsters lurking in the shadows. Each encounter tested their skills and teamwork, but they managed to subjugate the creatures without sustaining serious injuries. The further they ventured, the thicker the forest became, with towering trees and lush greenery obscuring their vision. The air grew heavier, carrying the faint scent of danger.
Suddenly, a loud, blood-curdling scream pierced the air, followed by the unmistakable sound of a fierce battle. The group froze, their senses heightened as they exchanged cautious glances. Without a word, they moved stealthily toward the source of the commotion, blending into the shadows of the forest. The closer they got, the stronger the stench of blood became, assaulting their noses with its metallic tang.
Peering through the dense foliage, the group stifled gasps at the horrific scene before them. Five mercenaries lay lifeless on the blood-soaked ground, their bodies mangled beyond recognition. Some were missing their heads, others their upper torsos. Crimson stains painted the surrounding area, evidence of the brutal fight that had taken place. Standing amidst the carnage was a towering, 17-meter-tall monkey-like monster. Its elongated snout and sharp rows of blood-drenched teeth added to its terrifying appearance. In one massive hand, it clutched the lifeless body of another mercenary, whose limbs were mangled and partially bitten off.
The group stood frozen in initial shock, their hearts pounding in their chests. The scene was a grim reminder of the dangers lurking in the forest. As they remained hidden, trying to process the brutality before them, the monster's piercing gaze suddenly locked onto their position. It had sensed them.
With a deafening roar that shook the nearby trees and sent dust flying into the air, the monster dropped the mercenary's corpse from its grasp. The earth seemed to tremble beneath its massive steps as it began to charge toward Arion and his group. The time for hiding was over; the fight for survival had begun.
"Prepare for battle!" Arion shouted, his voice cutting through the tension like a blade.
Vespera quickly scaled a nearby tree, her movements precise and silent. Perched high above, she steadied her energy sniper rifle, lining up her sights on the charging beast. Kira positioned herself at the front, raising her energy shield and gripping her battle hammer tightly, her eyes blazing with determination. Torrak roared as he raised his massive greatsword, his blue skin glistening with sweat as he prepared to meet the monster head-on. Damon muttered a support incantation, casting protective auras over his companions to bolster their strength and resilience. Kethar melted into the shadows, his form cloaked by the surrounding foliage as he prepared to strike from an unseen angle.
Arion, standing at the center of the group, extended his hands, and a swirling aura of space and time magic began to coalesce around him. His eyes glowed with an otherworldly light as he channeled his power, bending the fabric of reality itself. As the monster closed in, Arion unleashed a temporal rift, causing the beast's movements to slow as if it were trapped in thick molasses. The creature's thunderous steps faltered, giving the group a critical opening.
"Now!" Arion commanded.
Vespera fired a precise shot, but the energy bullet barely grazed the monster's thick hide. The beast bellowed in rage, its skin proving nearly impervious to their attacks. Torrak charged forward, his greatsword gleaming as he aimed for the legs, but his strikes glanced off the monster's tough exterior. Kira slammed her hammer into its side, creating a minor dent but no significant damage. Kethar's sharp bone protrusions scratched the surface of the beast's flank, eliciting only a low growl.
The creature's fury grew as Vespera continued her relentless shooting from above. Enraged by the persistent attacks, the monster grabbed a massive stone and hurled it at the tree she was perched in. Vespera's reflexes saved her as she leapt away just in time, landing gracefully on another branch as the tree exploded into splinters.
"Its hide is too thick!" Torrak growled, frustration evident in his voice.
"Aim for its chest and stomach!" Arion shouted, his sharp gaze analyzing the monster's movements. "Those areas are weaker!"
The squad shifted their focus, but the monster, realizing their intentions, became even more aggressive. Damon's magic flared as he cast barriers and healed minor injuries, keeping the group in the fight. Arion's eyes narrowed as he prepared his most powerful spell. He extended his hands, and the air around him began to shimmer and warp.
"Keep it distracted!" Arion commanded as the distortion around him grew stronger.
The beast roared and charged at Torrak, who blocked with his greatsword. Kira bashed its flank with her shield, forcing it to stumble. Vespera continued firing at its chest, keeping its attention divided, while Kethar darted in and out, delivering precise strikes.
Arion's voice echoed with a strange resonance as he unleashed his magic. "Temporal Pierce!"
A brilliant spear of energy formed in the air, shimmering with the distortion of space itself. The spear shot forward, aimed directly at the monster's heart. The space around the spear seemed to crack and collapse as if being erased from existence. The attack struck true, piercing through the beast's chest and into its heart. The monster froze mid-rampage, its glowing eyes wide with shock. It let out a final, guttural roar before collapsing to the ground.
The area around the impact shimmered unnaturally, cracks in space slowly regenerating as the fabric of reality mended itself. The group stood in stunned silence, the weight of the battle finally lifting.
Arion lowered his hands, his body trembling from the effort. His mana reserves had dropped significantly, and he could barely stand. He sat down heavily on the forest floor, pulling out an energy drink to replenish some of his depleted mana and energy. The cool liquid helped steady his breathing, but the toll of using such a powerful spell was evident in his pale complexion.
"We need to rest," Arion said, his voice faint but firm. The group nodded in agreement, still catching their breath from the grueling fight.
As they rested, the others began to loot the bodies of the six dead mercenaries. Their grim expressions showed they took no pleasure in the task, but survival demanded they make use of whatever resources were available. Among the items recovered were weapons, armor pieces, and a few valuable trinkets, which they split evenly among themselves.
Afterward, they turned their attention to the carcass of the monkey-like monster. Its thick hide and towering frame made it an intimidating sight even in death. Kira inspected the corpse closely, noting the areas of its chest and stomach where the hide was slightly thinner. "This thing was a nightmare to fight," she muttered, her voice tinged with respect and relief.
Arion pulled out a communication device and sent a message to their monster subjugation commander, reporting the situation. "This is Arion Chronos. We've encountered a massive monkey-like monster and six fallen mercenaries. Requesting retrieval of their bodies and the monster's carcass."
It wasn't long before a team of soldiers from Khorad-7 arrived at their location. The commander, a grizzled man with a stern expression, approached the group. "What happened here?" he asked, his tone sharp but not unkind.
Arion explained the events in detail, recounting the brutal fight and the mercenaries' tragic fate. The commander listened intently, nodding occasionally. "You all did well to survive that," he said at last. "We'll take it from here."
The soldiers began to gather the bodies of the mercenaries and the massive carcass of the monster. The group watched silently as the remains were loaded onto transport vehicles, the weight of the day's events settling heavily on their shoulders.
As night fell, Arion and his companions set up camp nearby. The flickering light of their campfire provided a small comfort against the oppressive darkness of the forest. Taking turns as guards, they ensured someone was always awake to keep watch. Exhaustion eventually claimed them one by one, but the bond forged in battle made them feel a little safer, even in the heart of danger.
