The Boy Who Never Was - A Harry Potter Fanfic

Chapter 4: Partner in crime?

Apparently she did not see the practicality in it.

She arrived not 5 minutes later.

Where was she if she was able to answer the letter so quickly.

Right now the professor and the Grangers were sitting in the living room with tea.

Hermione was sitting between her parents and I chose to stay standing.

Sitting across from her was Professor McGonagall.

The Professor looked like an elderly witch with square glasses in an emerald-green robe and kept her dark hair tightly pulled back in a bun.

"So is it true that Magic is real?" asked Dan.

"Yes, it is real." The professor replied.

I gave Hermione a smug grin.

Hermione gave me an annoyed expression.

Turning back my attention to the Professor.

From what I remembered of her in the story, she was well known for her no-nonsense personality and strict adherence to rules.

.....

We probably won't get along well.

....

The Grangers' living room was too neat for my taste.

Everything had its place.

The books lined up like soldiers on shelves, coasters stacked perfectly on the coffee table, not a speck of dust anywhere.

It made me itch to knock something over just to see what would happen.

But I behaved.

Mostly.

Professor McGonagall was sitting across from Hermione's Family and she was giving me a sharp side eye daring me to step out of line.

Is it really wrong to want to be an eco warrior at my age?

Hermione sat on the sofa, clutching her Hogwarts acceptance letter like it was a golden ticket to paradise.

She was practically vibrating with excitement.

Her parents, on the other hand, looked like they'd just been told she'd been recruited into a circus.

"Magic," Dan said, his tone skeptical as he adjusted his glasses.

"You're saying our daughter has magic? Because no offense intended but this is sounding a bit far-fetched"

"I suppose some skepticism is warranted but I assure you magic is real" McGonagall replied smoothly, her Scottish accent giving her words a kind of authority that made you want to stand up straighter.

She then lifted what seemed to be an ornate wooden stick and tapped her teacup she had just polished off and it turned into a mouse in front of our eyes.

The transformation itself was more than enough to prove magic was real considering we saw the cup shift into a living being in front of our eyes.

"Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry will teach her how to control and hone her abilities."

The Grangers looked shock while Hermione seemed to look like she was shaking with excitement and awe.

After a moment of back and forth between the family and professor about how magic worked and came to be, things came back on track in terms of their daugher.

Emma folded her arms, her eyes narrowing.

"But what about her education? Science? Mathematics? She's always excelled in those areas."

I leaned back in the armchair and grinned.

"Oh, I am sure she'll still excel. Except now, instead of solving equations, she'll be turning rats into goblets and making feathers float probably."

Hermione shot me a glare. "Sky, you're not helping."

"I think I'm helping a lot," I said, grinning wider.

"Besides, they'll find out sooner or later. Might as well rip off the bandage."

Emma gave me a gentle but thankful look, but McGonagall cleared her throat, drawing their attention back to her.

"While Hogwarts does not include traditional subjects, our curriculum is rigorous. Many Muggle-born students, such as Hermione may have the ability to adapt seamlessly and achieve great success in both the wizarding and non-magical worlds."

"And what kind of future does this... wizarding world offer?" Mr. Granger asked, his brow furrowing.

"Are there careers? Is it... safe?"

"Safe might be a bit of a stretch," I muttered under my breath.

"Mr. Kingston," McGonagall said, her tone icy enough to freeze the teapot,

"perhaps you would like to add something constructive to the conversation."

"I'm just providing context," I said, shrugging innocently.

"The only appeal I honestly see to this is in regards to learning a field that many won't have the capability to learn. I mean, the concept of magic is obscured in secrecy from what I can tell so its similar to gambling isn't it? Except instead of gambling away money, your essentially asking them to gamble their child potential future."

McGonagall gave me a withering look before turning back to the Grangers.

"Hogwarts is one of the safest places in the wizarding world," she assured them.

"Hermione will be under the care of experienced staff, and the education she receives will prepare her for a wide range of careers."

"Careers like what?" Mr. Granger asked, crossing his arms.

"Wizards and witches work in various fields," McGonagall explained.

"Magical research, healing, government positions, education, and even sports."

"ooh, what kind of sports are we talking about?" I asked

Hermione groaned. "Sky, stop. This is serious."

"Serious is boring," I said.

Emma sighed, her gaze shifting to Hermione. "And what about us, Hermione? Will we be... cut off from your world?"

"No!" Hermione exclaimed, her eyes wide with panic.

"I'll come home for the holidays. And there's a whole section in the library about Muggle-born witches and wizards. I'd never forget where I came from."

"That's true," I added.

"Loads of Muggle-borns have gone to Hogwarts and kept in touch with their families. Well, the ones who aren't too busy being brilliant."

Hermione flushed. "I'm not going to forget my family, Sky."

"Didn't say you would."

Emma still didn't look convinced. "Hermione, are you absolutely certain this is what you want?"

"Yes, Mum," she said, her voice trembling with determination.

"It's like a part of me I didn't even know was missing has suddenly clicked into place. I need to do this. Even in school right now, I always felt out of place and no one seems to want to be my friend."

There was a long pause.

Dan and Emma exchanged a look, one of those silent conversations that parents seem to have mastered.

Finally, Mr. Granger sighed. "If this is what you truly want, Hermione, we'll support you."

Hermione let out a little squeal and threw her arms around her parents.

I smirked and clapped my hands together. "Brilliant! Looks like I'll have a partner-in-crime at Hogwarts after all."

McGonagall fixed me with a steely gaze. "If by 'partner-in-crime,' you mean 'fellow student,' Mr. Kingston, then yes. Otherwise, I assure you, you will not."

"Of course, Professor," I said, flashing her my most innocent smile.

She didn't look convinced.

As Hermione beamed at her parents and promised to write every week, I leaned back in my chair, feeling pretty pleased with myself.

The Grangers didn't know it yet, but their lives were about to get a lot more interesting.

And I, Sky Kingston, couldn't wait to be right in the middle of it.

Of course, Partner in crime included.
