Chapter 16: Part 16 : THE HUNTER
They did not stay long at the resentful and disgruntled Lord Bertram's stronghold, with its small and crowded rooms.
They left immediately after they ate, drank, and rested a little, for the man was sitting on a raging fire and it seemed he had sworn oaths that none of his guests would taste comfort until tasted it himself first.
The two of them, after a heated discussion, agreed to leave the Northern and Southern soldiers in the stronghold and not to move them to a safer place, especially since they did not realize the consequences that would follow from opening a cursed jar. for in the end,... the devil kills everyone without preference!
The treasures hunter was more free after this point when his hands were untied and he was given a horse from the stronghold's horses.
He was the son of the Kingdom of Manfee and had surpassed thirty years of age, but he looked much younger than that, with long, shiny brown hair that reached his shoulders.
The group walked on a rough side path to the blue road, which ends at a vast and dense forest called 'the Devil's Well' in the middle of which lies a large lake called 'Lion's Drink.'
The hunter was engrossed in joking and telling dirty jokes to the ears of the two guards who couldn't hold back their laughter for long, until they heard the knight shouting at the witch - as they had distanced themselves from the group - in an angry voice:
"What does that prophecy mean for hell's sake? Can you see the unseen now?". Then he said, in a tone of defeat and tension:"Will Baldwin be okay?"
The witch replied to him in a low voice, turning her back several times anxiously toward the hunter. The hunter broke out of his sarcastic, indifferent demeanor in a moment and shouted in shock at the witch while approaching her on his horse:
"What have you done for heaven's sake? You're playing with fire, and you're going to burn us all !"
"It's permissible for you and forbidden for us,... did you think you were the only hunter in the world?"
"Is he one of the seven kings?"
"Do you think I'm foolish enough to dare to summon one of the seven!"
" I won't do it; I won't open that jar"
" But you will" replied the witch
The hunter turned to the knight nervously: "we can't open it, we must not believe a word that comes out of this woman's mouth".
Signs of astonishment appeared on Ser Declan, then he continued trying to convince him with his argument:
"The devil!... she is following the devil!"
"You both are doing it; you both are guilty before the sun".the knight replied with mockery mixed with confusion.
"We are not alike at all; prophecies do not descend from the sky. She has summoned a clever demons
The knight asked the witch skeptically:
"Is what he says true? Is this why you wanted us to come to this very stronghold?"
"I had a vision of the Lord of the North in my dream, and I wanted to warn him. Would the demon do that?"
" This is what my ancestors have echoed through the years, and look what happened"
The knight drew his sword from its scabbard and then raised it towards the hunter:
"You will do as ordered"
The hunter could see the hesitation in his eyes, but he knew that he was molded for obedience, like a sharp sword moved by its master's hand. Then he said with disappointment:
"You have chosen to be a knight in the end, my friend. Your chivalry will cost you dearly."
