Chapter 12: Chapter 12 - Instinct
Akio steps up, proposing a new change, which is brought on due to his new power.
"Everyone.. let's take the scouts away."
The proposal takes everyone by surprise, except for Genkei. Akio goes to continue, but he's instead interrupted by a knock. The person entering appears to be one of the very scouts Akio was talking about.
- "Commander.. it's the Dark Wizard's soldiers."
The scout's words grab the attention of everyone, but he falls. Akio runs to grab him in his hands, seeing that he's been heavily injured.
- "Achilles... What is it?"
- "They.. rose from the dead..."
Akio's eyes widen. He looks at Genkei and Alexa, who witnessed it firsthand, whilst Jack, Aoi and Harumi looked on in surprise. They had second-hand knowledge of it, but not like this.
- "I see. You guys, go to their location. I'll treat his wounds."
Not wasting a second, the five Generals leave, as Akio takes Achilles to the medical room.
"You.. Achilles, right?"
- "Yes, commander."
- "The soldiers that you faced, how did they turn out like that? Did you kill them?"
- "No..."
- "Then what? Their corpses weren't there?"
- "No, commander... They appeared like that out of nowhere."
Akio gets to thinking, as the image of the bastard that he faced appears in his head.
- "I see. In that case.. he knows it too. Achilles, how do you feel now?"
- "I feel fine, commander.. thank you."
- "Don't thank me. It's my duty. Can you move on your own, or do you need help?"
- "I think I can manage on my own."
- "Alright. Come with me, we're going back there."
- "What..?"
- "Starting now, your training will be specifically tailored to face them. You'll watch us and learn."
Achilles' eyes widen. Getting normal training from Atlas and Asterope is something that he's been used to, but he's not once seen all of the Shining Generals in action with his own eyes, and for training no less.
- "Right. Thanks, commander!"
- "Hm... No problem. However, come here."
Even if Achilles can walk on his own, running will probably be a bit hard. That being said, Akio simply decides to carry him.
- "I'm sorry, commander..."
- "What for?"
- "For having you carry me like this. I'm.. too weak."
- "Stop apologizing for stuff like that, Achilles. You are strong. My father told me that you're one of the most powerful soldiers in the force."
- "Yes.. it's true. But compared to those monsters..."
- "I know. I faced them too. That's all the more reason why this training will be important."
...
"Achilles."
- "Yes, commander."
- "First of all, call me Akio. Hearing you call me that sounds a bit weird. How old are you, even?"
- "I'm thirty two."
- "The hell!? It goes to show why you're so strong, then. All the more reason to call me by name. Anyways, that's besides the point. What did you feel when you fought the undead?"
- "Alright.. I felt an intense pressure. Their aura, it was incredibly powerful. Even though they weren't physically strong at first."
- "Hm? So.. do you think that they got stronger after some time?"
- "I think so, yes."
- "Then that proves my theory. You know, the first time I encountered an undead, I let the fight drag on. Genkei and Alexa killed their soldiers before they could see a difference. That being said, I did. The soldier got stronger and faster."
- "Mhm.."
- "At first, I didn't feel any damage at all, but it soon started being pretty damn painful. That's what you felt, right?"
- "Yeah."
- "Then let's see this principle in action once again, shall we?"
- "As you wish, Akio."
Akio laughs, as they close in on the battle. Now, he senses a few energy sources which he can distinguish a bit. Genkei, Jack, Alexa, Harumi, Aoi and a few other scouts.. but also other energies.
Trying to hone in on the other sources, Akio feels sick to the bone. For the first time, he senses the undead, but their energy signatures feel extremely evil, not like the pure energy emanating from the living combatants.
- "Dear lord..."
- "What is it?"
- "Their energies feel disgusting."
- "You weren't able to sense them before?"
- "Nope. Oh! That reminds me. Did you know that they can regenerate?"
- "What..?"
- "That's what I thought when I first saw them do that too. You need to destroy their head to kill them fully, but they make it difficult."
- "I see. At least.. we know how to beat them now."
Soon after, Akio and Achilles arrive at the battlefield. Akio puts Achilles down, as they walk towards the combatants. It looks like it's majorly under control now anyways. As they walk, however, Akio senses an undead soldier coming from their right.
- "Achilles, step back!"
Akio prepares a fireball to hit the soldier, but Achilles doesn't move.
- "..."
- "What the..? Achilles, get away!"
Suddenly, Achilles' eyes flash pale yellow, as he disappears from Akio's side. Instead, the soldier is punched upwards in the jaw, as a beam of light knocks him back downwards.
In that instant, with extreme speed, Achilles appears in the ground, throwing a few shards of light in the undead's face before having them explode, destroying it. Achilles appears once again behind the soldier, and for that moment, Akio was able to see his face clearly.
Blood is streaming down Achilles' mouth, but his pupils have disappeared, as if he's not conscious. Just an instant later, a pillar of light descends from the sky, disintegrating the undead's head fully, as the black flames turn the rest of the body into ashes.
Achilles falls down to the ground, as Akio runs to catch him.
- "Hey, Achilles. What the hell was that?"
- "What.. do you mean?"
- "Just now. You started moving very quickly and you killed that soldier."
- "Huh..?"
- "Wait. You don't know what you just did?"
- "No..."
- "Alright, then screw that. You can use light magic..?"
- "Yes, Akio. My magic attribute is light."
- "Well... That's cool!"
Achilles gives him a weird glance. They're fighting undead soldiers, and apparently he did some stuff and even killed an undead soldier, but Akio's thinking about his light attribute?
Well.. no matter. Achilles falls back, not wanting to involve himself any further.. until he sees another soldier coming from behind Akio. Of course, Akio does notice it.
"Hm.. Achilles, stay put..-"
Before Akio even finishes his sentence, a beam of light passes right next to his face, as the soldier's head is destroyed, the body turning to ash again. Akio simply looks at Achilles, whose right hand is outstreched...
