Chapter 17: The First Snare
The First Snare
As they pressed forward, the ground beneath them trembled. A low hum filled the air, growing louder until it became a deafening roar. Kierra grabbed Ryu's arm, her sharp eyes scanning the surroundings.
"Trap," she hissed.
Before they could react, shadowy tendrils erupted from the ground, writhing like living snakes. They lashed out, forcing the trio to scatter.
Fenn drew his blade, slicing through the tendrils nearest him, but they reformed almost instantly. "This is insane! They're regenerating!"
Kierra rolled to avoid a strike, her twin daggers flashing in the dim light. "Stop trying to cut them! Aim for their core!"
Ryu snarled, his claws glowing faintly with energy as he charged at the largest tendril. With a swift strike, he severed it, and the remaining tendrils shrieked in unison before retracting into the earth.
The silence that followed was heavy. Fenn wiped his brow, his breathing ragged. "Please tell me that's the worst he's got."
Kierra shook her head. "That wasn't Daegan. That was a warning."
The Hunter Becomes the Hunted
Further into the forest, the shadows grew heavier, and the air turned colder. The trio moved cautiously, every sound putting them on edge.
"We're being watched," Ryu muttered, his eyes darting to the treetops.
Kierra nodded. "He's close. I can feel it."
Suddenly, a deep voice echoed around them, dripping with mockery. "You've done well to make it this far, little Alpha. But strength alone won't save you."
Daegan's crimson eyes gleamed in the darkness, his form materializing from the shadows ahead. His lips curled into a smirk. "You're out of your depth, boy. Go back to your camp and let the adults handle the real threats."
Ryu stepped forward, his claws at the ready. "I'm not here to talk. You've hurt enough people, Daegan. This ends now."
Daegan chuckled, the sound low and menacing. "Oh, it will end. But not in the way you think."
With a flick of his wrist, the shadows surged forward, forming monstrous creatures with glowing red eyes.
"Get ready!" Ryu shouted, lunging into action.

The firelight faded behind them as Ryu, Kierra, and Fenn ventured deeper into the forest. The dense canopy above filtered the sunlight into thin streams, leaving the path ahead shrouded in shadows. The tension between the trio was palpable, their every step echoing the uncertainty of the task ahead.
Kierra broke the silence first, her voice low. "You know he's expecting us, right? Daegan doesn't leave loose ends. This is his game, and we're already playing."
Ryu glanced at her, his expression unreadable. "Then we stop playing. We'll end it on our terms."
Fenn, walking slightly behind, snorted. "Bold of you to assume we get a say in how this ends. The guy's a walking nightmare. Shadows don't just follow him—they obey him."
"Then we make them fear us," Ryu growled, his claws flexing as he scanned the darkening forest.

The Clash
The shadow beasts charged, their movements unnaturally fluid. Ryu met the first head-on, his claws slicing through its inky form. The beast dissipated, but two more took its place.
Kierra darted between the creatures, her daggers a blur as she struck at their cores. "We can't keep this up! They're endless!"
Fenn gritted his teeth, planting his feet as he unleashed a powerful slash that momentarily cleared their path. "We need to find him. Cut off the head, and the shadows will fall."
"Easier said than done," Ryu growled, dodging a clawed swipe. "Keep them busy. I'll handle Daegan."
Before they could protest, Ryu broke through the horde, his glowing claws carving a path toward Daegan. The rogue Beastman stood calmly, his arms crossed as if unimpressed.
"You've got spirit," Daegan said, his smirk widening. "But spirit won't save you."
He raised his hand, and the shadows surged once more, forming a massive beast that towered over the forest. Its crimson eyes locked onto Ryu as it let out a deafening roar.
A Glimmer of Hope
Before the creature could strike, a burst of golden light cut through the shadows, forcing Daegan to shield his eyes. The massive beast recoiled, howling in pain.
From the trees, Ardent emerged, his shimmering armor radiating brilliance. "Enough of this!" he bellowed.
Ryu blinked in surprise but quickly refocused. "What are you doing here?"
Ardent didn't look at him, his gaze fixed on Daegan. "Helping you finish this."
Daegan snarled, his calm demeanor cracking for the first time. "You shouldn't have interfered, Ardent. This isn't your fight."
"It became my fight the moment you threatened these lands," Ardent shot back.
The golden light from Ardent's armor spread across the clearing, forcing the shadows to retreat. Ryu felt a surge of energy as the oppressive darkness lifted slightly.
"Ryu," Ardent said, his voice steady. "Strike now while he's weakened. End this."
To Be Continued
Would Ryu seize the opportunity and strike Daegan down, or would the rogue Beastman reveal another card up his sleeve? The battle was far from over, and the lines between allies and enemies were beginning to blur.
