Chapter 17: Of Timelines, Heroes, and Red-Haired Legends
Nick Romero sat cross-legged on the floor of his cabin, absently plucking at his guitar. The soft strumming wasn't particularly musical—it was more of a nervous habit as his thoughts drifted to the swirling questions he could never quite escape.
Three years. Nearly three years since he'd been pulled from his world and dropped into the multiverse, forced to navigate a maze of chaotic storylines and dangerous foes. Every day here felt like an eternity, but he now knew the truth: one year in this world was only a month back home.
"That's great and all," he muttered, strumming a particularly sour note, "but it doesn't make it any easier knowing my family thinks I'm dead."
The Wives System materialized beside him, its glowing screen as cheerful as ever. "Analysis detected: Reflective melancholy. Would you like assistance?"
Nick rolled his eyes. "Unless you can explain why I have to keep babysitting timelines instead of living my own life, I'll pass."
"Your role is critical to multiversal stability," the AI replied. "Without your intervention, disruptions could cause irreparable damage to both these worlds and your original world."
Nick exhaled sharply, leaning back against the wall. "Yeah, I know. Save the anime worlds, save Earth. I'm basically a multiverse Avenger."
The AI flickered. "Analysis: Comparison to the Avengers is valid. Your mission aligns with their core principles of protecting the greater good."
Nick snorted. "Except I don't have a cool suit, a magical hammer, or a snarky billionaire backing me up."
"Your pendant serves as a tool of significant power," the AI said.
Nick held up the glowing crystal around his neck. "Yeah, sure. It's no Vibranium shield, but it gets the job done."
The Wives System's next message brought him back to reality. "Timeline analysis suggests the arrival of Erza Scarlet within the next two months."
Nick straightened, his fingers freezing on the guitar strings. "Erza? The Erza Scarlet? The Queen of Requip?!"
"Correct," the AI replied.
Nick stared at the screen, equal parts excitement and anxiety swirling in his chest. "Okay, wow. That's big. She's... she's basically a superhero. Like, Disney-level princess meets medieval Terminator."
The AI paused for a moment. "Your metaphor is unusual but not inaccurate."
Nick grinned, setting the guitar aside. "You're telling me that in two months, the most terrifyingly cool mage in the guild's history is going to walk through those doors? And I'm supposed to act normal?"
"Acting normal is recommended for maintaining social cohesion," the AI replied.
Nick shook his head, laughing softly. "Man, I can't wait to see her destroy half the guild in training. And Natsu's not even here yet to pick a fight with her."
The thought of Natsu brought a pang of worry. His arrival was still months away, but Nick already felt the pressure to keep things on track.
"Okay," he said, running a hand through his hair. "Here's the plan. I stay in Fairy Tail until Natsu shows up and makes everything official. Then I head to Heavenly Haven for proper training and Orario for combat experience. Simple enough."
"Recommendation approved," the AI said.
Two months later, the guild was buzzing with energy as the doors swung open to reveal their newest recruit.
Nick, sitting at the bar with Cana, turned just in time to see a red-haired girl step inside, her sharp eyes scanning the room with military precision. A massive cart of luggage trailed behind her, looking like it was packed for an army.
"Erza Scarlet," she announced, her voice calm but commanding.
Nick stared, momentarily speechless. "Wow," he whispered. "She's even scarier in person."
Cana snickered. "You're scared of a girl?"
"Not just any girl," Nick said, keeping his voice low. "That's Erza Scarlet. She's going to be the guild's strongest wizard. The person everyone respects and fears. Basically, she's Captain America with a wardrobe that could bankrupt Tony Stark."
Cana gave him a confused look. "What?"
"Never mind," Nick muttered, watching as Master Makarov greeted Erza with his usual warmth.
Erza wasted no time making her presence felt. Within hours of joining the guild, she was sparring with veteran members, effortlessly switching between weapons with her Requip magic.
Nick watched from a safe distance, marveling at her skill. "She's like a walking Swiss Army knife," he muttered. "A terrifying, red-haired Swiss Army knife."
The Wives System chimed in beside him. "Observation: Erza Scarlet exhibits exceptional combat proficiency and leadership potential. She may serve as a valuable ally in future endeavors."
Nick nodded. "Yeah, no kidding. But let's be honest—she's way out of my league. Can you imagine me trying to fight alongside her? I'd be the comic relief."
"Humor is a valuable team dynamic," the AI said cheerfully.
Nick smirked. "Thanks for the pep talk."
As Erza's training sessions became a daily spectacle, Nick couldn't help but think about the future of the guild.
"Erza's going to whip everyone into shape," he thought, watching her knock an older member flat with a single strike. "Then Natsu's going to show up and immediately challenge her to a fight. Gray's going to strip his way into the middle of things. And Lucy..."
He paused, a small smile tugging at his lips. "Lucy's going to bring the heart to this madhouse. The dreamer who writes her own story, even when it gets messy."
The AI flickered. "Potential romantic partner detected: Lucy Heartfilia."
Nick groaned. "Not this again. Look, she's perfect for Natsu. I'm not about to mess with that."
"Noted," the AI replied, though its tone suggested it wasn't done matchmaking.
Later that night, as the guild settled down, Nick sat alone on the porch of his cabin. The stars twinkled overhead, a reminder of the vast worlds waiting for him.
He tightened his grip on the glowing pendant around his neck. "Erza's here. Natsu's coming soon. After that, it's my turn to leave."
The Wives System chimed gently. "Progress is built on consistent effort. Your current trajectory aligns with multiversal stability."
Nick chuckled softly. "You always know how to make things sound so boring."
As the night deepened, he allowed himself a moment of peace, knowing that his time in Fairy Tail was coming to an end—but the adventure was only just beginning.
