Chapter 14: Getting into fight

"Thanks for the help, Iron Spider. We'll take it from here," the police officer said, his voice tinged with gratitude as his team secured the scene of the foiled bank heist.

"No problem. Just doing what a hero should do," I replied, adjusting the settings on my web-shooters as I prepared to take off. The crowd was still buzzing with murmurs, their faces a mix of awe and relief.

As I swung into the air, my thoughts turned elsewhere. The Wayne Foundation gala was fast approaching, and I'd entrusted Emme to attend as the company's CEO. The event was a calculated risk. On one hand, it offered a unique opportunity to strengthen our foothold in Gotham, paving the way for future ventures—and more importantly, gaining access to information about the Court of Owls. On the other hand, it increased the likelihood of drawing Batman's attention. While he couldn't act against us without evidence, his suspicions were a threat I couldn't ignore. The risk was low but not negligible.

"Alert: There's been an attack on a prison transport vehicle," Red's monotone voice interrupted my thoughts, her holographic form flickering to life on my wrist console.

"Show me the footage," I instructed.

The video feed played instantly, showing a prison transport vehicle struck by a javelin mid-route. The impact was violent, flipping the armored car before the footage cut out abruptly.

"Red, pull up the transport manifest," I ordered.

"Here," she replied, the list materializing in front of me. Names and details scrolled across the screen.

"Firefly," I muttered. "He was being transported from Central City to Gotham for crimes committed there." My brow furrowed as I analyzed the situation. "This attack has Sportsmaster written all over it."

If I was right, this was no random hit. The timing and execution suggested a larger scheme. Whatever it was, I'd need to be ready.

=========

The day in Star City had been unusually calm—no major crimes, no disturbances. It was shaping up to be a rare, peaceful day. But, of course, it couldn't last. The serenity was shattered by none other than Firefly, one of Batman's rogue villains.

The real question was, why was Firefly here in Star City? He belonged in Gotham, wreaking havoc in his usual stomping grounds. Something about his presence felt off.

He came in hot—literally—unleashing streams of fire from his jetpack-mounted flamethrower. I barely managed to dodge his fiery assault, rolling to the side and nocking an arrow. Drawing my bowstring taut, I aimed for his jetpack, hoping to ground him quickly.

But as my arrow sailed through the air, it was intercepted mid-flight by another—sleek and black, its trajectory perfectly timed.

"Merlyn," I muttered under my breath, my gaze scanning the rooftops.

The Dark Archer stepped out of the shadows with his signature smirk, his bow already drawn. "Hello, . Did you really think I'd let you have all the fun today?"

But he wasn't alone. Flanking him were Deadshot, his rifle gleaming ominously, and Sportsmaster, casually spinning one of his deadly javelins like it was a toy.

"Hope you don't mind," Merlyn said, his voice dripping with mockery, "but I brought some friends."

So much for a peaceful day.
