Chapter 89: Chapter 089 ⤞ I, an Otherworlder, Make My Move
The Door of Providence was hard to find — but not for Adam.
His 〔Perception〕 skill could scan everything in the mansion, though he rarely used it since it revealed too much.
He closed his eyes, focused carefully, then turned and forcefully flung open the second great door behind him with a loud bang!
"Hey, Beatrice, I came to see you!"
"Eek!"
His sudden entrance startled Betty, who was perched on a chair reaching for a book on the high shelf.
She lost her balance and began to fall.
"Beatrice!" Adam switched his Breathing Technique and rushed forward at incredible speed, catching her in his arms, "Be careful."
His scolding words were filled with concern.
"Are you alright? Are you hurt?"
"No, I'm fine." Betty composed herself and glanced at his arms still holding her, "Hey, shouldn't you put me down now?"
"Ah, sorry, sorry, I wasn't thinking." Adam quickly set her down.
Betty straightened her slightly disheveled red fancy dress and settled into the luxurious chair with perfect posture.
Anyone who didn't know her would mistake her for a princess, given her noble and elegant appearance.
"What brings you here again? Betty has no more Shadow Magic to teach you."
Her words made Adam feel like a playboy who only appeared when he needed something.
"What kind of person do you think I am?" He gave a quiet complaint, then lifted the tea tray he'd been holding, "I just came to chat and share some tea with you."
"Tea?" Betty looked at him, then at the tea set beside her.
"Ahem, I brewed this myself. Even Ram praised it highly." To mask his embarrassment, Adam strode forward and replaced her tea set with his own.
"Really?" She eyed him skeptically, clearly doubtful.
Ram had always prepared her tea, and Betty knew how exceptional her tea-making skills were. Yet if Ram had acknowledged his tea, perhaps it possessed something special.
"If you don't believe me, why not try it?" He poured a cup and offered it to Betty.
She took a hesitant sip, then her eyes brightened.
"It's delicious!"
The tea matched Ram's in quality, but its unique style offered Betty a novel sensation she'd never experienced before. It even lifted her spirits.
"Right?" Adam smiled, accepting her praise.
"Well then, Betty needs to read, so why don't you leave if you have nothing else?" Before he could respond, Beatrice had already adopted her dismissive attitude.
"Uh, I still wanted to chat with Beatrice."
"Betty has nothing to discuss with you." She paused thoughtfully, then asked, "You must have some Divine Protection, right?"
"Divine Protection?"
"If you don't have Divine Protection, how could you possibly learn most of Betty's Shadow Magic in such a short time?" Her curiosity about his extraordinary abilities showed through, though she added with typical reserve, "Of course, it's your right whether to tell or not. Betty won't force you to say it."
Despite her words, her curious expression betrayed her true interest.
"Ah, about that..." Adam drew out his words mysteriously, and Betty found herself drawn in, watching him intently.
When the moment felt right, he revealed the truth.
"It's not Divine Protection — I don't have any Divine Protection at all."
"Liar!" Betty's brows furrowed in anger, "How could a human without Divine Protection learn so many Shadow Magic spells after seeing them just once? Even Roswaal couldn't do that! Are you lying to Betty?"
She hated being deceived!
The Magical Energy around her surged rapidly, making the books on the Forbidden Library's shelves tremble.
"Wait, it really isn't Divine Protection — it's something else!" Adam quickly explained, seeing her anger, "It's my special ability: Analyse and Copy."
"Analyse and Copy?"
"Yes, as the name suggests, it analyzes everything and copies it perfectly."
Though Betty wanted to accuse him of lying again, his sincere expression convinced her otherwise.
However, she had caught an unusual term, "What's a Skill?"
"Ah, about Skills..." Adam began to build up the atmosphere.
But seeing her impatient look, he stopped and pulled out his adventurer card.
"This is called an adventurer card. It shows things like Experience Points and Level. You can also learn new Skills by using it."
Betty took it and examined it carefully, noting the dense text.
But she couldn't read it!
"This card..." She suspected deception, but when she saw him manipulate something on it and the card emitted a faint glow, she knew it was genuine.
Her interest was piqued!
"This card and the text on it — are they from some remote country?" She asked curiously.
"This card is issued by the Adventurer's Guild, and the text is the common writing of another world."
She had followed Adam's earlier words, but this revelation made her mind spin.
"Eh?"
"I'm actually from another world."
"EH?!!"
Even for a Great Spirit who had lived for 400 years, upon hearing such shocking news, Betty's usually composed face crumbled. Her golden drill-shaped hair tied on both sides began spinning rapidly.
How amazing!
"Now, now, no need to be so shocked. Calm down, breathe." Though Adam found her rare flustered appearance delightful, he needed to help her regain composure.
He gently patted her back until Betty's expression settled, though confusion still clouded her mind.
"H-how is that possible..."
"Shh, this is a secret." He placed his finger on her small lips and whispered, "Nobody knows about this — not Roswaal, Emilia, Puck, Ram, Rem, not even Subaru. This is just between you and me, okay?"
Though Natsuki knew he was a transmigrator, he remained unaware that Adam could travel between worlds.
Betty nodded blankly, struggling to process his words.
The first step in building an intimate relationship is sharing a secret!
Since he intended to form a contract with Betty and take her from the Re:Zero world, honesty was essential. As a Great Spirit who valued contracts, once she agreed to his terms, she would keep his secret.
Adam knew she harbored doubts, but for now, she was simply overwhelmed by his revelation. The questions would come once she recovered.
But his next moves would convince her!
After all, he truly was from another world.
Adam asked softly, "Beatrice, do you like books, writing, and knowledge?"
Betty nodded blankly, then quickly recovered her usual manner, "Betty is the Great Spirit who guards the Forbidden Library, what do you think?"
For 400 years, she had guarded the Forbidden Library with only books as companions, finding entertainment solely in their pages.
"Mm, that's impressive." After praising her, he asked, "Then would Beatrice be interested in learning about books, writing, and knowledge from another world?"
In an instant, her eyes began to sparkle.
"Yes, I'll teach you." Adam said with a smile.
