Chapter 66: Chapter 66: An Unlikely Alliance

The colossal smoke pillar of Smoker's "White Blow" gently set Alex's makeshift longship down on the deck of the Marine vessel. Surrounding them were dozens of armed Marines, their expressions a mix of suspicion and bewilderment.

Smoker, his two cigars perpetually smoking, eyed Alex's group. "Alright. State your identities. And why were you attempting to ram a Marine warship at full speed?" His voice was a low growl, laced with irritation.

A brief but intense interrogation followed. Olvia, ever the diplomat, took the lead, spinning a convincing tale of being shipwrecked survivors from a distant, isolated tribal village, lost at sea and desperate for aid. She carefully omitted any mention of Alex's true origins or their powers, focusing on their seemingly helpless plight. The Marines, after a thorough but ultimately fruitless search for any signs of piracy or known criminal activity, finally concluded that Alex's group was not a threat. They were just... strangely powerful castaways. They also learned that Smoker was currently on a hunt for a notorious pirate group operating in these waters.

"Captain Smoker," Alex began, stepping forward, "since you're helping us reach an inhabited island, perhaps we could offer our assistance in your pirate hunt? Our combat skills are... considerable. We could reduce casualties on your side."

Smoker exhaled a thick plume of smoke, narrowing his eyes. "That won't be necessary. Marines handle pirates. Stay out of the way." He puffed on his cigars, clearly refusing the offer.

Olvia tried a more diplomatic approach. "Captain, with all due respect, four skilled fighters could be an invaluable asset in a skirmish. Even a diversion could create an opening for your forces, saving lives."

But Smoker didn't budge. "My orders are clear. You are passengers. You will remain passengers. And while you are on my ship, all weapons will be confiscated. They will be returned to you upon disembarkation." He motioned to his men.

Reluctantly, Alex and his companions handed over their weapons. Alex surrendered his Longsword and shield, Erza her powerful blade, Olvia her elegant light swords, and even Tsunade's small collection of kunai and shurikens were given up. Happy and Acronix were, for the moment, simply observed with a mixture of curiosity and caution by the Marines, deemed harmless due to their small size.

They sailed for half a day. As the sun began to dip towards the horizon, a verdant island became visible. Smoke plumes curled into the sky from its shores, and the distinct outline of a pirate flag fluttered over a makeshift encampment. The pirate group Smoker was chasing was clearly on that island.

Alex approached Smoker again. "Captain," he said, his voice firm, "we can help. If we join the assault, we can significantly reduce the casualties on your side."

Smoker merely grunted, exhaling smoke, his gaze fixed on the island. He didn't answer, but the Marines working under him, accustomed to their Captain's gruff communication, understood that his silence implied reluctant consent. He wouldn't explicitly ask for help, but he wouldn't stop them either. Erza, meanwhile, bristled at Smoker's dismissive behavior. Alex was a Lord of a city, even if not in this world, and deserved more respect. But she kept her thoughts and emotions to herself, maintaining her composure.

As the Marine ship closed the distance, its cannons boomed, beginning a thunderous shelling of the pirate encampment. The shells rained down, tearing through tents and scattering pirates, as the ship moved towards the shore. Soon, they docked, and the Marines prepared to disembark. Their weapons were returned to Alex and his group.

The pirates, caught between the shelling and the approaching Marine forces, knew there was no way out. They formed a desperate last stand on the beach.

"Let's go, Happy, Acronix!" Alex commanded, the two summoned creatures shrinking slightly and hiding under his coat for stealth, as per prior training.

Annoyed by Smoker's dismissive attitude and eager for battle, Erza was the first to charge in, a crimson blur. Her sword flashed, quickly dispatching a couple of pirates with swift, powerful strikes before they could even react. Alex, Olvia, and Tsunade followed close behind, a deadly whirlwind. Marines, startled by the sheer ferocity of Alex's group, quickly followed suit, engaging the remaining pirates. Smoker, true to his mission, focused on apprehending the pirates, his smoke abilities wrapping around them, knocking them unconscious or restraining them, rather than outright killing.

The remaining pirates, seeing the overwhelming force and the brutal efficiency of Alex's group, quickly surrendered, knowing death was imminent if they resisted. They were chained and taken into custody.

While the Marines secured the prisoners, Alex slipped away towards the pirates' ship, eager to find anything of value. He moved with practiced stealth, quickly locating several chests filled with valuable items: a pile of Beli, a few logs of rare timber and a curious, ornate case that looks expensive, few cannons and gunpowder barrels and weapons. He swiftly stored all these valuables in his inventory before any Marines could witness them vanish into thin air, ensuring they remained unaware of his unique abilities.

The pirate ship itself was a wreck, too badly damaged to be taken by Alex's group. As the Marines began retreating towards their own vessel, their prisoners in tow, Alex approached Smoker. "Captain, we're going to take some of the spoils from this battle. Supplies, materials, etcetera."

Smoker stopped, a cloud of smoke puffing around him. "I won't allow extra baggage on my ship. We're not a transport service."

Olvia, stepping forward, her composure unwavering, countered, "Captain, we understand. We'll ensure your ship's speed doesn't decrease due to 'extra baggage'. We'll only take what we can carry discreetly." She shot Alex a glance, indicating their intention to use his inventory for the bulk of it.

With Smoker's silent, annoyed assent, the Marines began their retreat. Alex and his group quickly made another pass through the pirate camp, confirming there wasn't much beyond what Alex had already secured. They packed items (like a couple of weapon) into folded cloths, making it seem as though they were only taking a small portion of the loot. They returned to the Marine ship, blending in as the crew prepared for departure. Soon, Smoker's vessel turned, heading back towards its destination, Alex's group now discreet passengers on a legitimate Marine ship.
