Chapter 10: A New Dawn
Dinner was followed by another tour of sorts as I showed off the various workbenches and tomes I had inside of the house, before telling her that anything that might cause a bit of a problem were to be conducted outside on those workbenches, from alchemy with nasty ingredients to large form enchanting circles that needed far too much space.
After that I decided what Wynn needed more than anything else was sleep, so I sent her off to bed and took a few moments for myself as I tried to plan out some kind of schedule to follow, all while I nursed a glass of wine to end the night properly, soothing some of the nerves that didn't want to go away with the confidence provided by alcohol.
When morning came around it was a whole new day with a whole new focus for me, the original plan of further exploring any of the ruins I had discovered or replenishing some of my material storage with a monster hunt pushed back a few days as I acknowledged that I needed to 'break' Wynn in to this sort of lifestyle over the one she had been living before.
The Academy provided a skeleton for these Apprentices to follow going forwards, a structure that got them accustomed to a life that always required a structure if you wanted to succeed, but it was our job as their mentors to ensure that they were given said structure...
Creating it was one hell of a task, but I was lucky to have seemingly landed a student that knew she needed to continue following her previous schedule until told otherwise since she came downstairs only a few minutes after I had, though where I was ready for the day she was still wearing her robe and showing clear signs of having just woken up.
"Good morning Wynn. Breakfast will be ready in ten minutes."
All I got in response was a grunt and a yawn, so I filed that away as Wynn not being a morning person and deciding to change some of the things for the day around as best I could think of, all while I continued to sear some thin strips of steak for a nice filling meal to start the day.
The bluenette just plopped down at the table and yawned again, and after a few more seconds of silence I glanced over my shoulder and raised a brow when I saw her resting her head in her arms, though without me asking she managed to grumble "I... awake... not sleep... yet..."
So she was very much not a morning person, but that was fine; I did also get to see that she was easily woken by the sound of a plate being placed before her, and the moment the scent of our breakfast hit her from up close she sat up and looked it over, her eyes clearing up and focusing on the important thing.
When a mug of coffee was added to the table she perked up right away, and without much fanfare she drained almost half of her mug before looking at the flaky biscuit that had a folded egg, those strips of steak, and a thin hash brown resting between its two halves.
Simple yet filling, and despite its simplicity it tasted wonderful for the meal to start the day, especially when washed down with a mouthful of rich, strong coffee to completely wake you up; neither of us spoke until the plates were cleared and the mugs drained, but I still had a half pot waiting for me, so I had a little more, as did Wynn.
"So today will be all about me gauging your skills, Wynn. Which schools of magic you excel at, what needs desperate improvement, what you are interested in... all of that is on the agenda for today.
Before we can head anywhere to give you a proper practical test and work on improving your applicable skills, I will be going over all of your theoretical skills and getting a gauge on what you can and can't do.
I know you've had a few practical exams in the Academy that focused on magical application, but the difference between monsters that were tamed and bred for the sole purpose of helping you learn combat skills and wild monsters who only know how to kill is far too wide to push you there right away."
Wynn nodded, a sliver of worry creeping into her green eyes as she thought about the implications of that, though as I added "That likely won't be for another week or two, so don't worry. And even then, we'll start small and work our way up to something strong. Now, go get ready and dressed for some training outside." she calmed down and gave me a nod, leaving me to clean up from breakfast.
It took her a few minutes, but she eventually returned downstairs in more practical attire; leather pants and a leather top that hugged her figure to ensure she could move freely, fingerless gloves that protected her hands somewhat while still allowing for her to display her dexterity, and then her belt that had her wand alongside a few potions and charms.
Typical workout attire for a Witch, though it was always going to be fascinating seeing a woman as short as she was prepared for combat; so much danger packed into a tiny package was both amusing and scary, though I didn't stare too long as I gestured for her to walk back out onto the rocky plains to begin her training.
When I let her know it was a quick spar to start she took her wand and twisted herself so that her dominant side was facing me, taking the traditional and forever taught method of battling as a Witch, one that everyone knew and few people actually used.
But that was what I was here for, so as I faced her head on I decided I would spend this spar allowing her to sling spells at me freely until she found herself having to move around and actually figure out a style that fit her... or at least, the seedling of that style that we could nurture together going forwards.
