Hidden Leaf Village.
The once-glorious Senju Clan had long since lost its former radiance. Especially after Princess Tsunade left the village, the strength of the Senju Clan had rapidly declined, as if it was on the verge of disappearing from the stage of history entirely.
Even their residence had shrunk to just a few small courtyards, a far cry from what it once was.
Inside one of the inconspicuous courtyards, Xu Fan sat cross-legged on a straw mat.
He had lived in this world for five years. Five whole years. Nobody knew how he had endured all this time.
"The Senju Clan has one measure of talent: Hashirama owns nine parts, Tobirama three, Tsunade one, and the rest of the clan owes three more parts…
Xu Fan couldn't help but lament in his heart. Since Tobirama passed away, the Senju Clan had gone down faster than anyone could have imagined. By the time it reached Xu Fan, nobody was talking about any sort of Wood Release or how he had regenerative abilities.
It took him five years just to gather enough chakra to even activate the tiny auxiliary system he had.
Being a descendant of the Senju Clan, Xu Fan had not obtained any of the benefits associated with it.
Finally activating his auxiliary system, the first beginner's mission appeared right away.
Ding!
Host, please go to the border of the Forest of Fire Country for sign-in. Successfully signing in will give the beginner's reward!
Xu Fan knit his brows slightly. He had mastered the timeline upon his first transmigration to this world. In a way, the history of the Hidden Leaf Village became like his life itself.
Internally, the Uchiha Clan still existed and was making subtle moves against the political structure of the Leaf. Externally, the hidden conflict between the Hidden Cloud Village and the Hidden Leaf Village continued unabated. Although an alliance had been announced just recently, undoubtedly still spies from the Land of Lightning operated within the area.
But where there's risk, there's also opportunity.
"If I take the risk, perhaps I might change the odds to my advantage!" Xu Fan's determination flashed in his eyes.
Before the fateful transmigration, Xu Fan was an ardent reader of web novels. He could discourse endlessly on Qidian tropes; understandably, he knew just what to do, then.
Moreover, he doesn't have too much of a choice about his present predicament.
Initially, when Xu Fan first stumbled into this world, he had been fairly positive.
It took place during a time before the events of the Naruto storyline following the rampages of the Nine-Tails.
It was a relatively peaceful and safe time for the Hidden Leaf Village.
Moreover, being from the Senju Clan gave him sufficient time to plan, grow stronger, and possibly even use his bloodline to rise up the ranks of the village.
But soon, his optimism faded.
Although he belonged to the Senju Clan, Xu Fan had an abysmally low amount of chakra in his body.
This meant that even if he attended the ninja academy, he wouldn't be able to graduate, let alone become a proper ninja.
For Xu Fan, this was a devastating blow.
Thankfully, after five grueling years, he had finally extracted enough chakra to activate his auxiliary system.
Now was the time.
"To the forest border."
Xu Fan stood up, entered his house, and deliberately changed into clothes suitable for action. Then he left the courtyard in haste.
Although the forest border was remote, it wasn't difficult to find.
However, at this particular time, the Hidden Leaf Village was teeming with hidden dangers.
Even the village entrances were being guarded by chunin-level ninjas.
"It seems I won't be able to leave the village openly."
Xu Fan muttered to himself. He was still dozens of meters from the exit when the guards noticed him.
If he told the truth—that he wanted to explore the border—the guards probably wouldn't believe him. Worse, they might report him to the ANBU.
"I'll find a secluded spot and sneak out. I'll sign in quickly and return before anyone notices."
Having made up his mind, Xu Fan moved rapidly, circling the village for hours.
I have been training for five years, but I am still no match for true ninjas," Xu Fan muttered to himself.
Still, he had managed to escape the guards and was almost reaching the border.
Just when Xu Fan was about to finish signing in, he saw other forms around him.
"Have I been found? Are the Hidden Leaf guards following me?"
Xu Fan quickly dodged behind a large tree and took a good look at the situation.
What he saw amazed him.
The intruders did not come from the Hidden Leaf.
They were from the Hidden Cloud Village.
One of them wears a tilted forehead protector like Kakashi, moves as fast as the wind, and carries an unconscious little girl in his arms, getting closer.
Xu Fan squints under the moonlight to get a better look at the face of the girl.
"Wait, isn't that Hinata from the Hyuga Clan?" Xu Fan was stunned.
From what he remembered, members of the Hidden Cloud Village had indeed tried to kidnap Hinata. However, they hadn't made it out of the village before being stopped by Hiashi Hyuga.
So why had they reached the border this time?
A butterfly effect?
"No…" Xu Fan shook his head. Thinking back, the Hyuga Clan had always been shrouded in mystery regarding this incident.
"Could it be that the Hyuga Clan covered up the truth?"
It was possible. Neji, as a member of the branch family, likely wouldn't have known the full details of what transpired that night.
While Xu Fan pondered the situation, a sudden surge of killing intent crept up behind him.
Swish—
A streak of cold light passed by. Xu Fan rolled to the side in time and narrowly avoided a kunai, which struck the ground near him.
It was the Cloud ninjas.
"So, they found me after all."
"Kill him," one of them commanded, their animosity toward Leaf Village and current situation fueling their bloodlust.
They drew their kunai and rushed at Xu Fan, intending to eliminate him and rendezvous with their leader.
Xu Fan bolted, running for his life.
These Cloud ninjas were willing to kidnap Hinata; there was no way they'd let him go.
Fortunately, within a few breaths, Xu Fan reached the edge of the forest border.
Ding!
Congratulations on arriving at the sign-in location. Beginning sign-in now!
The sign-in process needed to be finished 100%. Leaving in the middle counted as failure.
The notification of the system calmed Xu Fan somewhat. In the next moment, however, a kunai grazed his cheek, leaving a bloody gash.
Thunk!
The kunai was now buried in a tree in front of him as a wave of killing intent closed in.
Xu Fan turned and what he saw felt like demons from the depths of hell closing in.
1%… 23%…
Xu Fan instinctively retreated but felt a sharp pain in his ankle.
A black kunai had slashed his muscle, rendering him unable to run.
The Cloud ninjas raised their kunai, charging at him with murderous intent.
"Die, Leaf brat!"
69%… 77%…
Pain radiated from his ankle, and Xu Fan could only watch helplessly as the weapons closed in.
100%!
