Chapter 8: Chapter 8: Unexpected Ideas
Elsewhere in the city, Alexis Lane, the beloved beauty of Ling University, had just returned home.
With a scowl on her face and irritation swirling around her, she walked briskly through the grand halls of the City Lord's Mansion. Her aura was so heavy that even the maids didn't dare to greet her. They simply bowed their heads and got out of her way.
Yes, Alexis wasn't just anyone. She was the daughter of the City Lord of Tianhai City.
At lunch, her father, Lord Lane, raised an eyebrow at her sour expression. She sat silently at the dining table, mechanically picking at her food.
"What's the matter, my dear daughter?" he asked, feigning innocence as he sliced into his steak. "I heard some great news—you awakened an S-level Talent today and even gained a Hidden Combat Class: Frost Mage!"
The principal had called Lord Lane personally after the ceremony, thrilled about Alexis's rare awakening. Her father had been waiting all morning for her to walk in proudly and brag about her new class.
But she didn't.
And now, here she was, acting like she'd just lost a battle.
"Mm." Alexis gave a soft grunt, barely looking up from her plate. She stabbed a vegetable with her fork and shoved it into her mouth.
"Who upset my precious daughter?" Lord Lane asked again, this time half-laughing. Her face, once so proud and smug, looked defeated. That wasn't like her at all.
Alexis was always confident, sometimes to the point of arrogance. She had every reason to be: stunning looks, sharp mind, powerful family. She had no shortage of admirers and had always walked with her chin high.
Now? She looked like she'd been publicly embarrassed.
"…There's someone else in our class who awakened an S-level Talent and also has a Hidden Combat Class," she muttered finally. "I wanted to team up with him for the monster-hunting trip tomorrow. But… he turned me down."
Lord Lane blinked. "Oh?"
He was genuinely shocked. His daughter was famous—charming, admired, and brilliant. Who in their right mind would turn down her offer to form a team?
That was… rare.
"I'm full." Alexis shoved her plate aside and stood up, her mood clearly getting worse. Without waiting for permission, she turned and walked back to her room alone.
Lord Lane watched her go with amusement. Then, curiosity struck.
"A hidden combat profession and an S-level Talent, huh?"
He waved his hand to his butler and leaned closer. "Bring me the full list of this year's job transfers. I want to know everything."
Not long after, a neat document was delivered to him.
His eyes skimmed the names until they paused.
Lucas. S-Level Talent. Class: Shadow Assassin.
"Oh… interesting," Lord Lane murmured with a sly smile. "His father is part of our city defense unit, and his mother, Martha, works in our logistics department."
He chuckled to himself.
So that's the kid? The one bold enough to reject his daughter?
He was impressed.
And maybe—just maybe—it was time to give his daughter a little help.
---
Back upstairs, Alexis flopped onto her soft bed with a groan and rolled around in frustration.
She couldn't stop thinking about it.
Why would Lucas turn her down? He used to be polite and warm to her, even helping her occasionally in class.
But today… he didn't even hesitate.
She grabbed her phone and opened the student group chat that the school had created earlier. It was a new group for all 300+ combat profession students to stay in touch and coordinate ahead of tomorrow's monster hunt.
The group chat was buzzing with activity. Everyone was introducing themselves, forming teams, or showing off their awakened talents.
At first, Alexis scrolled half-heartedly, uninterested.
Then a familiar name popped up—Leon Graves, the self-obsessed monitor of Class 1, Grade 3. He had awakened an A-level Talent and a decent combat class, and now he was blatantly recruiting teammates.
His post read:
> "Looking for team members! A-level and above only!
Preferably female students—beautiful ones get priority!
Talents with great synergy also get priority!
First come, first served!"
Alexis rolled her eyes. Leon had always been shameless, but this was a new low.
There were barely a dozen students with A-level combat talents, and only a handful were girls. It wasn't a fair competition—it was chaos.
Predictably, the chat exploded. People started arguing, mocking, and even begging to join.
Some, frustrated by the absurd "beautiful girl first" rule, jumped in just to troll.
One of those people was Mason, Lucas's best friend and tablemate. A little chubby, full of energy, and fiercely loyal, Mason wasn't about to let Leon show off unchecked.
He sent a sarcastic message into the group:
> "Leon Graves, with your pimpled face looking like a battlefield, you want to form a team of beauties? Might as well look for toads to match your face!"
The chat went wild.
Leon exploded with rage.
"How dare a B-level loser like you talk to me like that? You won't even hit Level 10 in a month! You'll be lucky if a third-rate university accepts you!"
That insult hit a nerve. Many B-level and C-level students were in the group chat, and Leon's words sparked a storm.
Students rallied behind Mason, firing back at Leon's arrogance. The whole chat descended into a fiery battle of words.
Mason led the charge.
"You're just an A-level, not a god!" he shouted (digitally). "When my brother Lucas starts leveling up, I'll be right there with him. We'll leave you in the dust!"
Leon sneered. "Lucas won't take trash like you with him. You'll hold him back. He'll crash and burn because of you!"
The argument dragged on for over an hour, but eventually, Leon was overwhelmed by the numbers.
He went quiet, humiliated.
Mason, too, finally stopped.
Watching all of this, Alexis began to understand.
Lucas didn't reject her because he didn't like her.
He just wanted to protect his friend.
He didn't want to abandon Mason.
Her heart softened. That's kind of… noble.
She opened the chat, searched for Lucas's name, and initiated a private message.
> "Lucas, I get it now. You didn't want to leave Mason behind."
"I respect that."
"Let's compromise. I'm okay with Mason joining too. We'll make a three-person team."
"Even if that slows down my progress, I'm willing to take that risk. It's worth it."
"Let's team up tomorrow. The three of us."
Alexis felt proud of herself. She was being mature, empathetic, even generous.
She smiled softly, sure Lucas would be touched.
She waited for a response.
And waited.
Hours passed.
Still nothing.
---
Meanwhile, Lucas had spent his entire afternoon deep in research, diving into job class mechanics, monster strategies, and leveling routes. He hadn't checked his phone at all.
It wasn't until that night, long after dinner, that he casually opened the group chat and saw the glowing private message notification.
"…Huh?"
He tapped it open.
After reading her long message, Lucas tilted his head slightly.
Then replied with just two words:
> "Sorry. No."
---
Back in her room, Alexis had been staring at her phone all evening, waiting for his reply.
When it finally came…
She almost threw her phone across the room.
"What the hell?!" she shouted, outraged.
Rejected again?!
This time, after she'd humbled herself and made such a generous offer?
She was fuming.
"Lucas!! You big jerk!!"
Her shout echoed through the grand mansion as the maids quickly scattered.
