Son of darkness

Chapter 4: Volume 1, Chapter 4 — "Victory Over the Snow Mountain Demon… Or Not"

From a distance, David muttered:

"Alright… let's begin, you bastard."

He started walking toward the battlefield. At that moment, Raihan was locked in battle with the demon. He was already somewhat exhausted from fighting constantly — not only against the demon, but also against the transformed humans.

Only Raihan and the demon remained on the field. Suddenly, he heard David's voice shout:

"Hey! Bring him over here, now!"

Hearing this, Raihan turned and looked at David. There was confidence burning in David's eyes — and Raihan trusted it. He had seen him fight that transformed human.

Turning his back to the demon, Raihan began sprinting toward David. Seeing this, David readied himself. The demon chased after him.

Just 20 meters left.

"Jump!" David shouted.

Raihan leapt with all his strength — and managed to jump more than 25 meters.

Spreading his wings, he soared into the air. David, using the last of his strength, threw a net at the demon. It hit.

The demon struggled violently, doing everything it could to break free.

"Pull it down!" David yelled.

Hearing him, the others began pulling the caravan over the cliff. As Raihan fell, the demon's claw slashed the right side of his arm. He hit the ground hard, but quickly joined the others to help.

Despite their efforts, the Snow Mountain Demon didn't go down without a fight. It thrashed wildly, its massive claws slicing into its own flesh as it tried — and failed — to tear the net apart.

Finally, with Raihan's strength, they managed to push the caravan. The rope tied to it began dragging the demon toward the edge. As it slid past David, it turned toward him.

Though it had no eyes, it clearly sensed the fierce, victorious grin forming on David's face — like a wild beast that had just defeated its prey.

The demon plummeted off the cliff with a bone-shaking roar.

David barely remained on his feet. He stumbled toward the campfire, collapsed beside it, and began to rest. Raihan joined him — drained from non-stop fighting.

The two former slaves also sat down. Raihan looked at David, pulled out a set of keys, and said:

"Here. Take these."

David looked at Raihan's wounded hand, took the keys, and unlocked his shackles. Then he tossed the keys to Erot and William, who freed themselves as well.

Raihan spoke:

"Tonight, we rest. In the morning, we leave the mountain."

Erot sneered:

"Hah! Like we're supposed to believe you. What then — back to being slaves? Screw that."

Raihan calmly replied:

"No. Each of us will go our own way."

William smiled softly:

"Perfect. Once we're off this mountain, we split up."

But David cut in:

"I'd advise you not to descend the mountain… unless you're eager to die."

The others turned to him, surprised.

William asked:

"And why's that?"

"You seriously think a monster like that dies from a fall? He's a mid-tier demon — a Snow Mountain Demon. Don't forget — Raihan couldn't even scratch him."

A heavy silence fell.

Raihan looked down, regret in his eyes.

"It's true. I couldn't even wound him. Falling off a cliff isn't enough to kill him."

William said:

"In that case, we head up. There should be a clearing that leads to the Sword Kingdom."

Raihan nodded.

"Then that's what we'll do. But first, we need supplies. The three of us will go search for them. You—"

He looked at David.

"Find water. My fallen comrades should have flasks. Grab them. We'll meet back here in half an hour."

David nodded and left to search for water. Nearly thirty minutes later, he had gathered fifteen water flasks. As he walked through the woods, he spotted the general.

Kneeling, David smirked:

"Wow… you're still not dead?"

The general turned his head and grumbled:

"You bastard… you didn't die to that demon?"

With a cruel grin, David replied:

"Of course not. I killed it. And now, I'm going to kill you — like I promised."

The general spat:

"Shit… We, trained soldiers, couldn't even scratch that thing, and you—"

"Yeah," David interrupted.

Taking the general's dagger, David slit his throat.

The man died instantly.

Inspecting the general's uniform, David stripped it off and put it on.

"Not bad… no wonder he was a general."

With the flasks in hand, he returned to the campfire. He handed them to the others and sat a little ways away. David had always been alone — he didn't know how to talk to people.

He stared into the flames, lost in thought.

Damn… damn it. What do I do? That bastard's still alive. The voice of fate didn't say anything. That means he's not dead. How the hell am I supposed to beat him…?

Raihan noticed David's new uniform and furrowed his brow.

So… he killed the general.
